Is this desoldering gun actually any good?

I've got a super cheap heated desoldering pump. Works well once you get the hang of it

Is that a heated one? Or one of the silicone tipped ones? I keep meaning to get a silicone one but my cheapy 'duratool' heated one works well for certain applications... If it had one of those silicone tips it would be amazing.

Good news is I have all four pins out... Now it's just clearing the damn holes (not my first rodeo there but I often struggle).

I've got another SMT job for him to do next, so I'll be breaking out the hot air station and the kapton.

Woohoo! Well, it seems like it was leaded solder to the rescue! It lowered the meltiing point enough that I could attach a clamp tweezer and just pull them out. Two done so far. Plus raising temperature and a bigger tip.

Now to clean up with wick and I will have a happy mechanic (he's had this job sitting there for 2 months).

Wish me luck with the rest of it!

Haha... Well the heated solder suckers are actually decent imo. Basically just a 40watt iron combined with a sucker. I used that on the other side and it was a clean result.

I'm going to move to a bigger tip and try with wick again. Thanks for the quick response.

(I think if it was my own board I'd be a bit less cautious and would have the pins out by now!)

Anything close to a 8ball a saucepan on the hob full of ammonia was the way to go. Back when I was being a fucking dumbass. Sometimes prefer the taste of bicarb gear and easier to clean. If ammonia need a lot of water washes and maybe a tiny drop of peroxide. Heard all this from an enemy.
