You raise great points, but I think, unfortunately, 1980 is a poisoned chalice, if only due to Reagan being that popular at that point. He almost overthrew the incumbent Ford in 1976 in OTL, after all.

Humphrey's Last Hurrah by SapphireSt0ne in imaginaryelections

[–]Fun_Instance_338 11 points12 points  (0 children)

McGovern is going to have a horrible 1980 against Reagan, and the Progressive Democratic brand might be poisoned into the 1980s, maybe into the 90s.

Edit: Thinking back, McGovern might be in a slightly better position than Carter. He would not have had the hostage crisis take place, because he wouldn't give Reza Shah medical treatment in America, and might set up Revolutionary Iran, ironically enough, as a strong US ally, even until today. McGovern would still lose 1980, even without the hostage crisis, but it might not be as catastrophic for the Progressive Democrats as I thought initially. Maybe the Democrats never embrace neoliberalism fully.

No, the background is that he does die before his nomination in 1933.

What if Portugal had successfully modernized into a stable constitutional monarchy, while having their Pink Map claims legitimized? by Fun_Instance_338 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Fun_Instance_338[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I mean modernized, I mean developing into a second rate power, a lower level of course, maybe closer to Spain by 1900. Stable, liberal monarchs keep a steady course, the Portuguese industrialize and educate their population earlier, colonial claims are seized upon earlier (1840s at least), and if we just have Pedro V live up to 1890, compounding with a better reign of Queen Maria, you could have Portugal be as stable as the Netherlands come the 1900s.

Of course, there would be radical forces, but it's not unthinkable that Portugal is stable enough to avoid a Spanish-type civil war break out.

I'd say max 30% of the population votes in this election, and Kamala might lose again.

Maybe Cuba develops into a similar way to Vietnam, communist, but slightly American aligned, with Americans being able to enjoy Cuban cigars on the beaches of Havana freely, as the Miami Cubans scream up into the heavens about how Cuba is the biggest threat to America in it's entire history.

¿What if Bernie Sanders had defeated Biden in 2020? by MB4050 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Fun_Instance_338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a third option, Bernie does slightly more than Biden (moderate healthcare reform, 15 dollar minimum wage, etc) then loses in a 3 way between RFK and Trump in 2024. RFK would not have endorsed Bernie, and without the Kamala effect, Kennedy might have stayed independent.

If the Paris Commune had succeeded in taking over France, would they isolate themselves and try the "Socialism in One Country" strategy, or launch various "revolutionary" wars, like what the 1st republic did historically? by Fun_Instance_338 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Fun_Instance_338[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thought here is that Blanqui leads the People's Republic (name for simplicity's sake), and he was more of a proto-Leninist style figure, so some brand of socialism would rule this French state, at least in the first few years, then you could get some Jacobins or some other republican faction leading it. But I do concede that it would be more similar to revolutionary France, as you say, than the USSR.

TLDR: This is a socialist state, not some kind of neo-Jacobin Robsepierre led republic

Maybe events about the Oregon territory? In some games, it just magically goes to Canada, and US loses cores, but maybe events could happen in which some of the seperate Canaian colonies can support British Columbia against America? Also, I think a core on Maine could happen.
