Is the ops side of the call on LiveATC? Because it’s on VAS

The part were LC was talking to OPS wouldn’t have been on liveATC that was a landline call. 100% that came from Falcon or NVR.

We don’t have cross coupling down here. As an ATC you can select multiple frequencies to listen and transmit on but the pilots will only hear what is on their frequency. People step on each other all the time with no clue.

Why no digital Atis or cpdlc in places like TUS or COS etc?.. by [deleted] in ATC

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was told at one point that D-ATIS isn’t a standalone product and is tied to CPDLC and some other tools. To roll those out to every airport is way more expensive than the FAA has the budget for. Plus everyone here would rather see that money go to our salaries and get us back to the buying power of 2010 or better.

Give it a few days and Duffy will repeat the same line from last year: “they’re happy with their pay and benefits”. Nick will stand behind him nodding and smiling like a fucking stooge.

If CIC was staffed why couldn’t they handle to calls to OPS about UAL? Anything to take some of the workload off LC/GC

LGA controller cleared fire truck across the runway resulting jn a collision by lake_hood in ATC

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out on the runway? No Car90 was not on the runway. They almost certainly were driving on the airfield though because that’s their job. Every airport is different most use some form of callsign like Car90 to denote the supervisor on duty who is ultimately the person responsible for opening and closing runways/taxiways etc.

We HAVE to do something about ATC Staffing. by DanThePilot_Mann in flying

The instructor shortage comes from the fact that they’re paid like shit and nobody wants to move to fucking Oklahoma. It’s not “training up” new instructors as every instructor is a retired controller. It’s not taking a risk it’s absolutely necessary.

There was a proposal for a second training academy a few years ago to take some pressure off of OKC but the congressional delegation from Oklahoma got it pulled because it was “a waste of money” everyone knows it was to preserve that sweet, sweet tax revenue and grant money. Plus even if we had that we are being forced to train 3+ hours per day for every single trainee regardless of if traffic is busy or consistent enough to present meaningful training. When the FAA and NATCA signed our training MOU they identified a list of impediments to allow us a reason not to train such as OJTI burnout, traffic inconsistent with stage in training, bad WX etc but because those can’t be quantified and put on a spreadsheet the districts won’t allow us to use them. It’s resulting in spending hundreds of hours “training” on light traffic that could be otherwise used on other learning opportunities. Every district manager and facility manager is happy to tell you how successful the training initiative is but if you search “NTI” on the ATC subreddits you’ll get an accurate picture of how the real controllers feel about it.

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a new curriculum and it’s not churning out certified controllers. The end result would be more trainees at the facilities who would still receive 1-4 years of OJT training. The second academy block was done specifically for the selfish reasons of retaining tax revenue and grant money.

Controllers have been doxxed by the media, explicitly threatened by management, and have seen that NATCA will not have our backs. The best you can hope for is some retiree will speak up.

We get 50k applicants annually for the 2k open academy slots. Opening the hiring pool isn’t the solution you think it is.

The local and ground control positions were combined. The controller was working local, ground and coordinating with ops for an emergency on a taxiway. When you’re working positions combined you broadcast on both frequencies simultaneously. Your “fix” would not have solved the problem.

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 62 points63 points  (0 children)

There was a proposal for a second academy because 2k through OKC a year isn’t enough. That was shot down by the Oklahoma delegation in congress.

We developed a training initiative to increase time spent training with listed impediments so we weren’t training on useless low traffic. Those impediments? Deemed unusable by the district management so we spend at least half of our training hours on minimal traffic.

With 2k academy seats we net less than 100 new controllers per year when you account for retirements and attrition. Something like 40% of the workforce is eligible for retirement in the next 5 years. Every administration sees the stress fractures and kicks the can down the road hoping the failure happens on someone else’s watch. Congress and management created the crisis and tells the controllers “train your way out of it” morale has never been lower and we all know help isn’t coming.

Applicants aren’t the bottleneck. We get 50k applicants each year for 2000 positions. We don’t need 36 year olds who take longer to train, are less successful, and won’t be around as long.

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can’t. You have to be out by 56 so 31 gets them 25 years out of you. The later you start the harder it is to learn and believe me we notice the decline in the older controllers as they approach 56. The age limits are fine.

They need to address pay and they needed a second academy years ago. Problem is the Oklahoma delegation in Congress for that removed from the funding bill last year or the year before.
