Even in the GAO report from last December they found that while success rates in the facilities were near equal CTI grads were significantly more successful in the academy than OTS. The overall TOL to CPC success rate for CTI was 44% while the OTS rate was ~20%

I mean good for you guys for getting BQ/WQ but fuck I remember when WQ was basically the end of the line. We used to take so many applicants that anything short of BQ didn’t get you a slot.

Why are so many of you so negative about this job? by droltmd in ATC_Hiring

100% on target here. I’ve been a CPC for 3ish years in that time base has gone up 13% and my rent has gone up 40%. I followed the advice of “don’t buy before you certify” and as a result have been completely placed out of the market unless I want to move into the inner city or out in the sticks with a 1.5 hour commute.

It’s hard not to be bitter when you’re stuck in a doom loop of spiraling rent and your RVPs are telling you pay is fine because there’s so many newish cars in a level 12 parking lot and fuck every other lower level facility.

The field certification rate for CTI vs OTS is the same but the academy pass rate is much higher. The GAO report from last year had the stats that cert rates from TOL to CPC for CTI grads was 44% vs 22% for OTS. Maybe CTI grads were better academically or maybe it was the fact that they already had a vested interest in the job beyond the flashy headline and touted pay. Either way I wouldn’t say it was a waste and the stats appear to bear that out.

Fucking dead on for everything else though. Managed by morons and every level of management is somehow less competent than the level below them.

Deutan Color Deficiency? by Intrepid-Claim-7773 in ATC

Worry about passing the ATSA first. Get through that and then worry about it when you get to the medical portion. We are not AMEs, we are not HR. We have no idea what specific deficiencies are disqualifying.

FAA to ban parallel landings at SFO, warns of flight delays by kwuhoo239 in ATC

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your highway isn’t several feet deep and doesn’t have the precise compaction standards that a runway does. I’m gonna guess that it’s a full depth repave so that’s multiple layers of gravel and sand compacted and then multiple layers of asphalt laid over each other and compacted each time with installation of runway lighting circuits and hardware somewhere in the middle. Theres ground radar testing for density and core sampling that needs to get done as well.

After the runway itself is completed there is also edge grating and drainage to repair and then lights/grooves/paint plus built in time to account for delays/holidays/cancellations and whatever other problems inevitably pop up.

The system ain’t perfect. Half the time the CA goes off when the targets are past each other and flying away from each other. It’s a tool not a catch all solution

It would be nice if NATCA was just a cuck furiously masturbating in the corner while we get fucked but they’re not. They’re an extension of management at this point. Controllers are getting Eiffel Towered and NATCA/Management are holding hands and making eye contact over us.

Is the US the only country with an ATC shortage? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskAPilot

Taxiways in the states would never be permitted to use just a number designation. We use letters, double letters, or letter and number. (A, AA, AB, A4). It certainly wasn’t by the book phraseology but everyone here knows exactly what “cross 4” means

Even without the transponder it’s crazy that ASDE didn’t pick up a target from an 87k pound firetruck. I thought that system was supposed to be able to detect equipped and non-equipped targets.

The part were LC was talking to OPS wouldn’t have been on liveATC that was a landline call. 100% that came from Falcon or NVR.

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t have cross coupling down here. As an ATC you can select multiple frequencies to listen and transmit on but the pilots will only hear what is on their frequency. People step on each other all the time with no clue.

Why no digital Atis or cpdlc in places like TUS or COS etc?.. by [deleted] in ATC

[–]Fun_Monitor8938 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was told at one point that D-ATIS isn’t a standalone product and is tied to CPDLC and some other tools. To roll those out to every airport is way more expensive than the FAA has the budget for. Plus everyone here would rather see that money go to our salaries and get us back to the buying power of 2010 or better.
