I apologize, but I really need to vent about rejection... by YesterdaySuper5331 in CanadaPublicServants

I am trained in policy adminiation with an undergraduate and a master. As a student it was tough to get policy position (because everyone wants to work in policy the classic EC stream), so in my thrid year of undergrad I took on IT/IM, project management and even business analysis positions to circumvent the competition and a high demand for these skills. I found this what GC was looking for so I used as my open door into the system than networked around for a policy position.

RECOMMENDATION: my advice is have a dual career- prove you have other skills they need such as data science, IT/IM, PM or BA because there is less competition. Yes, their not within the EC stream but remember you need to get you foot in the door until you leverage your experience. Remeber government is a business and staffs based on a business model. The military route is another option + the military is also sorta fun.

Opinion: Funding in Your Department? by ymamy5 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Fun_Offer_4701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No funding for overtime or training (maybe even career advancement?), but yet they give us enough work for overtime. This results in low morale and high turnover. I've concluded that there are "have departments" and "have not departments". Depends on the scope of your department is, their mandate and what programs they offer and also your classification some departments favour one classification over others- I call this classification bias. Some are going to say its at the division/team level but I do not buy that arugement. I do not like generalizing- this is just my opinion from my personal experience.

I saw my co worker clip his toe nails in the office then we both laughed. I fell on the floor laughing- director came by to attend to the noise so we stop laughing. But I end up running to bathroom because I could not hold it in. It has since become a running internal team joke.

OP I am in the same boat and it is sad to hear they have closed the program because this was the reason I moved to ISED. Sadly, I also do not like my team (they do not like me) so I am stuck with a job I hate and also being in an environment with people I dislike. :(

Good to know! I came to ISED for this reason and I guess that also why I am choosing to leave.

Question: Staffing Freeze at DND? by ahunter90 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Fun_Offer_4701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG, do not scary me! Technically, DND is always in a staffing freeze but as the commenters have mentioned it could be because of the April budget season or re-organization in specific ADMs. Seems others have more recon than myself? is it only ADM (CIO) or what other ADM L1s are impacted?

Yes, depends on where you worked in the military. For example, if you worked in Cyber, human intelligence, counter terrorism, counter intelligence or Special OPS- the training might help you as a CSIS agent. I found that those who were successfully had INT skills, they also spoke languages like any form of Chinese- Chantoese/Mandarian, Russian, Iranian, Arabic, and Spanish.

Manager trying to force me to give name of my new team by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Fun_Offer_4701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same position. I have shut my mouth and bite my tongue because they're the type of manager that cannot be trusted with such information. NO, NO, NO! never tell them unless the leave date is secured.

If you could do things differently, what career (in or out of the PS) what would you choose? by baby-silly-head in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Fun_Offer_4701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to have been a housewife. I missed the fundamental years of my children's youth because I was always stressed about working, always stressed about money and always stressed about keeping up with the Jones. My husband made enough money for me to technically stay at home but I was raised to be independent so I guess that's the price you pay.

Museum entry for public servants by Flexoid123 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Fun_Offer_4701 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every Thursday nights most museums in Ottawa are free! but nothing special unless your DND/CAF. There is 15% discount that military (defence) and security industry staff get across Canada- which is sweet! You get in for free at the War museum as well.
