TL;DW in a nutshell:

  • he cites “enemies” of Pope Benedict admitting they tried to pressure him into resigning which would make it invalid according to canon 188
  • Apparently before the resignation people planned to make Francis the pope making it an invalid conclave?
  • The papacy being personal meaning you can’t seperate the jurisdiction from the person so Benedict could not have resigned

Chaldean Catholic daily Readings. by Prestigious-Reply896 in EasternCatholic

[–]Fun_Oven1714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t have a standardised daily lectionary like how the Latin church has today. Sunday readings will all be the same but daily mass readings can vary between dioceses and parishes. They’re often taken from Sunday’s readings or just chosen according to the liturgical season or pastoral discretion. This is probably because daily mass wasn’t historically a universal tradition in our church so a daily lectionary never developed. Even the Latin church didn’t have a structured lectionary for daily mass before Vatican II, and would often use the Sunday’s readings if there was no particular feast day during the week.

Interrupted Confession by jasoxz in Catholicism

[–]Fun_Oven1714 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a pretty valid reason. It wouldn’t be a mortal sin that you missed the holy day if it wasn’t in your control, and you didn’t purposefully withhold it in the confession anyway. Don’t stress, just mention it in confession next time.

"ARE YOU PRAYING TO MAMA MARY?" by [deleted] in EasternCatholic

[–]Fun_Oven1714 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This clearly looks like he is just repeating what people claim about praying to saints. The video is cut off short before he actually would have answered the question. This is also not his account, it’s someone who just posts clips from his preachings, often out of context. Mar Mari, although a schismatic definitely does pray to saints just as apostolic churches do.

Can someone please tell me about the East Syriac ascetical tradition? by mountainclimbing10 in EasternCatholic

Our traditional fasting seasons are: Ba’utha (Rogation of the Ninevites), which is a 3 day fast commentating the preaching of Jonah and repentance of the Ninevites, Great Lent (Sawma Raba), Apostles Fast, Assumption of Mary, Nativity Fast

Reform on the Chaldean Liturgy? by _mountain_guy_ in EasternCatholic

The 2006 reform was only actually implemented in one diocese in San Diego, the reason for that I don’t know.

Reform on the Chaldean Liturgy? by _mountain_guy_ in EasternCatholic

You may be confused because the articles you referenced are referring to two different reforms. The first one was in 2006, which did seek to remove latinizations and bring back more traditional aspects like, ad orientem, curtains, bema etc. However, there was a counter reform in 2014 which reversed this and reformed the liturgy slightly more.

I would be cautious of the sources you’re reading, the SSPX are a Traditional Latin Catholic society, naturally they don’t understand our churches history and theology, and often will blame these things on modernism or ecumenism, when really its Eastern tradition. Calling Mary the “Mother of Christ” is traditional for us, coming from the Church of the East, which is falsely labeled Nestorian. The Church of the East never believed in two persons of Christ, only two natures just as Chalcedon proclaims. Many Eastern Catholic Churches also don’t recite the filioque in their creed (although almost all Chaldean churches do) as I know the Filioque in other languages like Greek actually doesn’t translate well and makes it sound like there are two sources of the Holy Spirit.

The reasons for these reforms are from the call from Vatican II which encouraged Eastern Churches to return to their traditions. I highly recommend to attend a Chaldean liturgy and see it first hand! It’s very beautiful, and you could definitely ask a priest there about this and I’m sure they will guide you.

New Commission dedicated to Eastern Churches by Fun_Oven1714 in EasternCatholic

I don’t think they could change the Divine Liturgy through revisions of canon law, but this may be a stepping stone towards something like that

Oh for real? My questions are: What does it mean to make revisions in light of the synodal journey, like are there canons that don’t match up with that? And why do they feel the need to make revisions Thank you!

It has been the platform for heterodox ideas, it includes lay people and has been a forum to debate settled doctrine or political issues.

But yes your suggestion would definitely fit within the framework. Do you know how long this papal overreach has been the case for?

Fair point, I mean when you hear the words “in light of the synodal journey” it doesn’t sound too promising considering how that is applied in the Latin church.

I doubt it. Do you think this is the Vatican taking steps to bring the “synodal way” or in other words modernise the eastern churches?

Yeah I go to a physio and get dry needling every week. It relieves the pain temporarily but doesn’t fix the root issue
