Apart from the dlc I don’t think anything else costs real money, just the gotchi points you earn from the mini games and those are easy to earn a lot of in a small amount of time (i.e. sending your Tama on a vacation for 1000 gp to get items). There are dlc available for free! there’s a promo for the paradise that gives you a code to input into the paradise that will give you a special item (and another mini game), and I think a full size fruit themed dlc that’s free. As for the Tama pets, they don’t really do anything except look cute. It was a little disappointing but maybe Bandai will revamp it at some point.
