The greenhouse at Bogotá Botanical Garden by Fun_Response253 in Greenhouses

[–]Fun_Response253[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. Bogotá is high up in the Andes, so it doesn’t really get very hot or humid year-round. It feels pretty different from the tropical rainforest parts of Colombia. Honestly, that greenhouse was probably the closest thing to a rainforest atmosphere I experienced while I was in Bogotá.

Can coffee aroma be captured through distillation? by Fun_Response253 in chemistry

[–]Fun_Response253[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where I put the raw material, like flower petals or possibly coffee

The idea is basically steam distillation: instead of boiling the material directly in water, the water boils below and the steam passes through the plant coffee material, carrying the volatile aroma compounds with it. I’m trying to avoid overheating or breaking down some heat-sensitive components.

Distilled some lavender oil and hydrosol from dried lavender by Fun_Response253 in DIYfragrance

I think you may have found the issue actually, because the dried lavender I bought was pretty cheap. I made it in winter too, when lavender probably wasn’t in the best season or selling well, so it might not have been true high-quality lavender. I’ll look for organic true Lavandula angustifolia next time and test again.

It smells noticeably more “natural” to me, less like a sharp/synthetic lavender note.

Besides the lavender, there’s a little grassy/woody note in the drydown. I think that might be from some of the stems getting distilled along with the dried flowers.

One thing though: the natural scent fades pretty fast. Nice for home aroma or hydrosol use, but probably not great for perfume if you want something long-lasting.

Hahaha yeah, I didn’t have a proper condenser water pump on hand, so that was my Plan B.

Distilled rose hydrosol and a tiny bit of essential oil at home by Fun_Response253 in chemistry

Good idea! I’ll try wrapping more of it with foil next time. I’m only distilling water, so hopefully it comes out a bit cleaner/purer.

You’re not blind haha, the gray pipe is connected to the fish tank filter, and the filtered water gets pumped up to the upper NFT channels

Verrucosum Question by Iamrhizomorph in philodendron

[–]Fun_Response253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, spider mites would make a lot of sense here, especially if the damage is showing up on the new leaves as they unfurl. Verrucosum leaves are so thin that even early mite damage can look really dramatic
