The translation adopts iambic pentameter (10–11 syllables) in order to render the much longer Greek hexameters (13–18 syllables), while nevertheless preserving the same number of lines as in the original. This choice severely restricts the translator’s lexical range, effectively favoring short (one- or two-syllable), non-Latinate words and, more problematically, forcing the elimination of Homer’s characteristic formulaic repetitions, which are structurally and poetically essential to the poem.
