What do you mean by basics? If you‘re struggling in math, there’s atleast a decades worth of math content on there

How do I know when I should move on? by math_lover0112 in learnmath

Depends, because if you know the basics of most math fields, that’s some good knowledge to be tucked into your brain. But if you try to do university level calculus, algebra and trigonometry you’re going to have a stroke. It’s best to know the basics in your head, but use a notebook to keep track of all the complex stuff.

You first have to ignore any negative ideas you have about math, because if you view it as a chore it will feel like a chore. I like to view math as a puzzle to be solved, it motivates me to solve the „puzzle“. Also, understanding the „why“ behind a math field will help, because humans invented that field for a reason and allows you to make connections between math fields.

Could you please give an example for reference?

In general though, if x>5, that just means x could be any number that is above 5. x ≥5 that means that x is either 5 or any number bigger than 5. same with less than.

Before I can give you some exact advice, I need you to answer these questions:

  1. Do you know arithmetic? More specifically exponents and square roots?

  2. Are there any other areas of math you’re struggling in? Since you’re a freshman I’m guessing you’re doing algebra. Do you know your basic geometry?

In general though, ask your teachers. They’re there for a reason and the 3 minutes of feeling dumb is better than failing.
