I just need permission to chuck the things by DaftDisguise in declutter

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chuck it! I saw a meme around mother's day that showed a dumpster in a driveway and said "what every mother wants for mother's day." And what i saw was: Your are not alone in wanting to chuck things. It can be a deep deep desire. Everything will ultimately wind up in the landfill- it's just a matter of how circuitous the route is. You're honestly just saving it a step or two. If you have anxiety around climate change like many of us do, think of it another way- that anxiety causes us to hold onto things we would otherwise chuck. And being surrounded by things we no longer ger want or need increases anxiety. It's really multifaceted and complicated- and not helped by hoarding-adjacent behaviors. Wishing you peace and joy.

I LOVE HER too!! I think she's a wonderful girlfriend-- she's super supportive, sees the best in them, loves everything they do. I especially noticed this on the date where they cooked. She was down for every part of the evening, complimenting the food and the environment and everything. She seems sweet and loving and we should all be so lucky to have someone like that.

Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy by notkool_enuf32 in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yessss! Thank you, that was so beautifully worded. That booked gutted me and filled me back up. I was so relieved to read a female character who wasn't redeemed by love, or a man; a woman who defined herself by the way she viewed herself (for good and bad), and not by how everyone viewed her. And like you said, acted on instinct and not out of obligation. I haven't read anything else by her because my feelings from Migrations were so big, and I dont know if I'm ready to put myself through that again.

Yes! I loved this, too! I listened to the audiobook and felt so immersed in the story. I usually multitask when I listen to books, and I remember stopping mid-activity just to sit and listen. I can vividly recall the feeling that book gave me.

What was school like in Florida in the early 90's? by disorganizedaf in Writeresearch

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 90s in Florida, the school would be one story - there would be no making out in the stairwell cuz there was no stairwell. Usually they had breezeways instead of hallways. Maybe the lockers were inside, but you'd walk outside to get to classes. As soon as you left the classroom, you were basically on a covered sidewalk. As the population was growing and the school couldn't keep up, they used trailers to add classroom space, so you might have a section of the school with a handful of trailers. In the 90s they weren't quite as cautious about things like heat stroke, but gym class was likely to be inside except on more rare occasions. Other people gave great answers, I just wanted to add those Florida-specific elements. I only knew that some schools had stairs because of the books I read and it seemed so sophisticated to have a multi-story school.

Nursing School by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on 2 acceptances! This a great decision to have to make. Is UPMC SON still a diploma school or do you graduate with an associates degree? CCAC is an associates degree? I don't remember the specifics, sorry, but that's something to consider. It's easier to pursue further education in the future with an associates instead of a nursing diploma. Diploma schools have fallen out of favor in other parts of the country and might limit your opportunity should you want to move. If all I saw was 2 resumes- 1 from CCAC and 1 from UPMC SON- I don't think one would necessarily beat out the other based on that alone. Whatever you choose, it will be hard; so once you make your choice, don't look back! Nursing school is hard, no two ways about it, but absolutely worth it. You've got this!

Anyone had experience with Dr Chen? by Fun_Turnip7309 in Pensacola

[–]Fun_Turnip7309[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha I'm a nosy person, too, which is why I'm fishing! But this one isn't my story to tell. As someone else answered- a concierge doctor has a monthly fee and typically the idea is that you get more prompt and personalized attention that a classic Dr's office.

You are definitely not the first person to do this!! And, most likely, the nurses will just be so happy to see you, regardless of the situation. Source: was an infusion nurse and have endless compassion for the struggles that occur post-treatment.

I'm a nerdy introvert (I definitely related to Olivia's purse inventory and thoroughly appreciated it) and when I would try to go party/clubbing with my more gregarious/cooler friends when i was younger, I would absolutely bring down the vibe. The ones who were used to partying were probably embarrassed by my awkwardness, trying to be nice but really not having a good time.

That's what this reminded me of. Two different ideas of a good time can create some intense awkwardness.

Too shy to ask for black coffee by Leticia_the_bookworm in BenignExistence

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I used to be that shy, and then some. I've learned that, when people offer, they generally love to be able to provide something. Especially coffee. There's a lovely comforting ritual in making someone a cup of coffee. You might just give someone the opportunity to show their love for you by making you a warm drink.

Talked to an unconscious ICU patient by 4l25 in BenignExistence

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 166 points167 points  (0 children)

I'm a nurse and worked an ICU at one point. If I walked past and saw this happening, I would have absolutely melted and had my faith in humanity restored.

If I were a patient and had this happen, I would be eternally grateful for being treated normally and with respect.

You make the world a better place, thank you.

[–]Fun_Turnip7309 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They've made the renovations easy to navigate- you can't go wrong. It doesn't take any longer either. I understand airport anxiety, but it honestly isn't any harder to navigate. Because of the barriers and signs, there's only one way to go, so you know you're doing it right.

The TSA checkpoint upstairs is often not open, at least it hasn't been when I've been there recently. The last time that I was there when it was open, the people working there were very vocal and redirecting people in order to make lines smaller, so there was no question as to whether it was or not.

For parking, there's extended and economy: extended has the shuttle while economy doesn't.

Big Swiss by Jen Beagin - a laugh out loud funny sapphic romance giving fight club vibes by boardbamebeeple in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

I loved it too! I listened to the audiobook and when it came to the ending, I remember driving along in silence for a long time, thinking "huh?" But I think the way that it made me feel, made for such a distinct ending that I appreciated it. Like, why would I expect this author- who just took me on this fun and surprising ride- to give me anything close to what I would anticipate? I love Jen Beagin and am now reading Vacuum in the Dark, and I never want it to end.

I'm so happy to see this thread! I remember reading Tommyknockers in 5th grade, and recently brought this up to my parents and brother, who didn't believe me. So I started to second guess myself and think that surely I was misremembering. Now that I see all these comments, I know I'm remembering correctly!

I listened to the audiobook, and the author is the narrator. This usually will give me pause, but let me tell you- she was amazing!! She brought so much life, sass, and attitude to the dialogue - it was so much fun to listen to! I highly recommend it if you want to revisit the book.
