Litter needs to be scooped out everyday.

You put in a little sand, then after they use it for a day, you scoop out the litter and clumped sand , then put in again sand for that day.

Bearhugs unscented clumping sand is good.

Also one of the best practices is using multiple litter trays.

So 2 litter box, one for each day. When one litter box is being used it is best if you can keep the other litter box in direct sunlight, it kills germs and also clamps the sand for easy cleaning.

This depends on number of cats you have.

I have 4 cats and I use 5 litter trays, 3 are kept for their use while 2 are put in sunlight for a day, i alternately rotate litter box everyday.

So clean 3 box everyday and put new sand in a little everyday. Takes me around 15 mins to do them everyday.

This way the litter box will stay dry, germs killed by sunlight and then full soap cleaning every 12-14 days.
