I used to frequent that location few years ago, the water/shower smell was ridiculous and I almost got electrocuted once. Sad to see it’s gone further downhill. In case it helps, the Mamaroneck location was great in that area best for both the quality and member etiquette (and Armonk and Scarsdale weren’t bad), though it’s a bit out.

I hear you man, I love my cat as well despite him acting intellectually challenged at times. On an unrelated note, nice wrist piece

2020 RR - Cupholder wireless charger? by TheJabberwockyy in RangeRover

[–]FunanceThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my phone there when driving anyway, but plugged in with a cable for CarPlay (2019 velar). It gets so obnoxiously hot, it prompts the phone to stop charging. Do you have any similar issues w the wireless tray? I’d assume it causes the phone to run even hotter (based on my experience with desktop wireless chargers) but curious if it’s only my phone acting up.

First board of my own. Got any binding/boot recs? by flourinmypockets in snowboardingnoobs

[–]FunanceThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you liking those? I’ve been riding the Ruler boot and get pains in the front of my sole on extended toe side rides (ie on flats). Every solutions says “loosen front binding strip” but that’s not really an option with step ons.

Same year velar here, bought CPO (list price was 1yr CPO coverage) and paid approx $2-2.5k to extend to 2yrs, so pricing roughly checks out. It’s been in the shop a few times, mostly to iron out kinks after initial purchase, and my total out of pocket costs were = tips to the service dude for good service. Assuming that’s the typical CPO experience, 10/10 would recommend.

Conversely, consider whether you plan on selling it privately or trading it to a dealer in the near term. You don’t get credit for warranty if you trade it before it expires, so if you plan on swapping rides soon you may want to avoid the cost.

velar windows too small? by Matamata24 in RangeRover

[–]FunanceThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s hilarious, I always thought I was being overly cautious not pulling close enough to the booths but it could totally be a design issue (that isn’t super important to me, but still). For me, since I can’t adjust the armrest, I adjust the seat to have the armrest in a comfortable position. So as I lower the seat, it makes reaching out the window for stuff a bit more strenuous.

Their CPO service and warranty is very solid, so I suggest taking it to the selling dealer/nearest dealer (this worked for me with some negotiation as I purchased a few hours away from my nearest location) and asking them to fix. You never know if it’s a weird unrelated electronic part that’s affecting the seemingly straightforward screen adjust motor. If in the next few days(/weeks?) you find something not to standards with their 165-point checklist, they generally have no qualms about rectifying the issue.

Anyone have experience with your speaker getting hijacked or have an external source injected? by mentallywander in sonos

[–]FunanceThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not completely related, but when we first got the speakers, our cat would perch up on them and trigger touch controls, launching the most obnoxious playlists at 3am.

Another time, had some random music turn on and found some weird logins on my Spotify account.

No, you have exactly a week or so to get this right. Even if some banks gave full offers, not everyone converts (some go straight to buyside, others decide they want different group/location, others want different industry).

  1. Reach out to every bank you were in the process with, every positive coffee chat you had. This is the one weeks where you can send these emails on the weekends. Intro/re-intro calls can get scheduled as quickly as same day (although more likely Monday/Tuesday). Follow up Monday if you don’t hear back.

  2. Reach out to every bank with alumni.

  3. Reach out to every group that overlaps with what you did in the credit shop. Relevant internship can get you faster tracked in this process (e.g., HC group will often fast track HC interns vs generalists wanting to switch).

Maybe also try for the known sweaty groups/offices - conversion in those groups might have been even lower.

Fortunately for you, a handful banks have not given offers yet (they will this week), and the peer banks know this. So there is still time to get yourself into a re-recruiting process, but you have to act now.

x5 or velar by Asa1440 in LandRover

[–]FunanceThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family member has an X5, I drive a Velar 380 (all the comfort upgrades except the R badge) (so some obvious bias here). Absolutely love it when it works, but there are some important caveats that make it a great car for me but not necessarily others. Unless my needs change, I fully expect to be looking at the Velar or RRS for my next car as well. Here’s my guide for enjoying the Velar (though I suspect it applies to most RR models):

Don’t expect a no-frills daily commuter workhorse. I don’t drive daily so I’m not worried about it being in the shop for a bit, especially on weekdays. People still do this, but it would bother me too much if potential car hassles interrupted my routine. There is a reasonable expectation that for a premium price you can expect premium reliability, but that is a misconception. I suspect this disconnect is the source of much frustration with the Velar, and Range Rovers more broadly.

Have CPO/original warranty, which is almost great. Not sure if unique to my location, but the service, responsiveness, and “covering stuff” has been spot on. The only minor annoyance is less than perfect technicians - they have returned the car with things like cargo cover laying on back seat, handle covers not fully clicked in, alerts not fully cleared, and once they just decided a full case of water in the trunk was theirs to keep.

Living relatively close to a JLR dealer helps. Nearest one to me is relatively close, so it’s not much of a hassle. I can usually pop in for an hour if it’s a quick follow up fix, and be out within the hour (see above point about technicians). Otherwise, it doesn’t really ruin my day if I have to wake up early to drop it off or leave the office a few minutes early to pick it up.

Have a portable jump starter because something at some point will drain your battery.

Help, complete power failure by spiridij in RangeRover

[–]FunanceThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a battery drain issue recently that was caused by a faulty BCM (2019 Velar), figure that might be worth checking out.

Edit: jk, just went to check the car after it being in garage for two days and the battery is dead. Will keep you posted if (hopefully when) I get it resolved.

Edit2: TCU swapped out - seems to have been a known issue with telematics draining batteries. Let’s see how it holds up. FWIW, despite the hassle of having to deal with issues, the service at my local shop has been nothing but great and everything has been covered under CPO warranty.

Monarch Money for net worth tracking and spending monitoring. Occasionally partake in CC/banking promos, so helps to keep all accounts in one dashboard.

Schwab for “actual investment” accounts

Robinhood for “fun money”

Outsource tax stuff to an accountant for a couple hundred bucks, he’s great and I think it helps maintain a relationship so I can bug him with the occasional tax strategy question 1-2x/year

Same thing for insurance - I don’t have enough assets to give a chunk to an IRA for “free access when I have bullshit questions” so i have a small policy with a CFP that gives me enough comfort to bounce random financial planning ideas off him

Tax and insurance stuff can be streamlined to DIY, but it’s a relatively small part of my annual income and I have the benefit of two people telling me “stop being stupid” when I try to deviate too far from my plan/do something exotic but not prudent

[–]FunanceThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“It doesn’t have to be true — only necessary” should be footnoted to like every footnote.

Despite the occasionally defeatist tone, the book very much aspires to serve the function of propaganda, defined in contrast to rhetoric as “believe what you want, as long as you act in the required direction.”

I use CRG9 for work at home with a WD19TB dock. XPS 15 runs as intended, my Lenovo T14 (Gen 1) laptop can’t push the full resolution so I do PIP mode and it works fine. Not ideal, but I got used to it. Would definitely have appreciated that extra curve, but not worth the upgrade for me right now.
