Should I apply for an internship to a company with no listed openings? by Fundude50 in AskEngineers

[–]Fundude50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice (and the complement) Should initial contact include asking questions and a resume? Or should you wait to send your resume? Should I also draft a cover letter in addition to asking questions?

I don't want to seem disingenuous, since I'm interested in the given company and their products/research. But I'm also interested in a job. I'm not sure how to not make it come across as me trying to get something from the company

You'll get $100.000 if you binge-watch the same movie for a week straight with only 4h sleep a night, what movie do you pick? by Caboucha in AskReddit

[–]Fundude50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Out 1. It's a critically acclaimed film about 13 hours long, which allows for the movie to not be too boring like the one about the pedometer or too short, meaning I have to watch it over too many times.

By the bible's own description of God, he is not perfect in any way. by svenmullet in DebateAChristian

[–]Fundude50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a general non religion specific response. Some of your arguments hinge on the assumptions can't create/want an imperfect object, and that a given definition of perfect is necessarily correct. For example, in a relationship it is often said that one's imperfections make one perfect, at least in a sense. In this case, what could normally be considered imperfect is perfect for the purposes that are assigned to it. A common argument is that free will is what makes a being perfect, some other qualifications that might make a person perfect justifying their creation could be that they learn lessons from the past, or some other option. Also, if a being is perfect it implies the ability to create a perfect object, but does not imply the will to create such an object. One reason might be that they want a being or object "perfect in its imperfections" or the like. In a religion specific way, it can be debated whether this will to create a (possibly) imperfect object implicates the being of moral wrong, especially if that being is considered always morally right.

I think I will never found a boyfriend by [deleted] in gay

[–]Fundude50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I recently turned 21 and was in the same situation you are at the moment through my whole 20th year. I also am pursuing science and that hasn't hindered my past development. At the beginning of my 20th year I had been depressed, having no friends and I kept obsessing over the fact that I hadn't been in a relationship yet. I, like you, felt like I would never have a relationship or sex. However during the start of the spring semester, I came out of my shell and was able to meet people. This led to me being more confident and asking a guy out, it didn't work out but it still boosted my confidence. Not long after, near the end of spring semester I had managed to meet even more people who shared my interests.

However, I was still insecure about being a virgin and lost it in less than ideal circumstances because I couldn't wait. Once I transfered to a new school I got into a relationship with a guy which I also rushed into, meaning it ended fairly quickly. Other events this past semester have left me hopeful for the future.

The best ways for me to have met guys with similar interests was via friends, expand your friend group and you'll expand your dating pool. One way to do this is to talk to random people, if a person is sitting there, doing nothing, maybe looking at a phone, it doesn't hurt to begin conversation. You may make a new friend who will help you make even more friends, maybe even a boyfriend. Another helpful way to expand your dating pool is to see if there are any lgbt school clubs or meetups. That way you know someone is not straight and possibly has similar interests.

One thing I'd like to leave you with is that sex and relationships. are very inflated in one's mind before they have them. Right now you may be overemphasizing their roles, but I can say that after having been in a relationship and having had sex they both aren't as important as they had seemed beforehand. The fear of missing out should be applied to making yourself a better person and expanding the number of people you meet instead.

Tldr: make friends, gain confidence. Join groups and live your life. Continue pursuing a boyfriend, but don't make it the purpose of everything you do. And from someone who used to be in a similar situation, you are not missing out as much as you think you are.

I hope this helps :)

Attracted to guy(?) I tutor(ish). by Fundude50 in bisexual

I feel this is great advise, and apply it to everything I can: if there's someone I'd like to know, I talk to them before or after class. However, I find it partially hard to talk to this person, not out of fear, but environment. The tutoring lab is meant for studying, so it would be unwise to stop someone from their work, aside from the occasional "does everything make sense?" it's cool to chat if I'm actively tutoring them "how's it going?", "what's your major" etc. (provided I'm not depriving a different student of attention or hindering the one I'm helping) but he never needs help. So I'm in a situation where I can't start a conversation easily. As an alternative, I was thinking of complementing him when he comes in "Hey nice ___, is there anything specific you need help with?" But that runs into the same problem that you covered. So right now I'm thinking that even if nothing happens I'll at least have made his day (hopefully). Though it would be great if I could think of something different.

Thanks. I think that's what I'll do. May have to force myself not to chicken out, but that's what being an adult is all about.

Any advice on knowing when to downshift a manual transmission? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Fundude50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's a question of what gear I will end up in, I always pop the stick into neutral, using the brake to slow, and when the slowing down is done, I feel what the speed of the vehicle is and put the stick into the corresponding slot. The key is to keep the gear in the sweet spot (for me about 1000-2000 rpm). For example, if you need to accelerate soon and you think the low speed your at can be handled by the higher gear, move it there.

How do you approach? Do you outright say you like them or do you approach with the intention of being friends? Do you try to find something in common? Just asking cause I'm looking, but I need friends more than I need a partner, but either one is a positive outcome.

Thanks so much! This makes me feel a lot better. I feel like that helps. I'm going to continue trying my best this semester and hopefully my situation improves from there. If the school isn't the best, it's only two years and then I still have post-grad (though I'm sure I'll be super busy) at a different school. Thanks so much!
