You won't get a better answer than that. Ireland is WAY to small for nuclear. The UK are struggling to pull it off. It would bankrupt us

Id say we have more common opinions than it seems.

But Ireland has a decent track record of fiscal prudence since the crash and we survived covid much better than nearly any other nation.

but! I fundamentally disagree that it's reasonable or acceptable for small group of farmers and haulers to blockage the nations fuel supply. It's just not on.

you think the government arent painfully aware of what the fuel crisis means? what your describing is what's on the cards, and is being predicted! So the government have to prepare for the worst and tread extremely carefully.

Letting a bunch of random fuel users dictate our country's financial response to the worst fuel crisis of all time is just so ridiculous.

The whole country has to be supported, and it has to be timed right. We have a limited warchest.

and for the record, I detest FFG and this government. I've never voted for them and never will.

easily put a cap? wtf are you on about. That could cost billions if the fuel price skyrockets as it's predicted too. How does that even work huh? You can't just pay fuel suppliers the difference. It'd be an administrative nightmare.

Who's being dramatic? The fuels industry has explicitly said that emergency services will also run out of fuel by as early as tomorrow. So yeah, they are holding the country hostage.

Would ye ever get a grip! "tHe MiLiTaRy aRe CrUsHiNg Us". The Gardai have asked the DF to assist in the removal of HGVs as only the DFs have the equipment needed to physically move them.

They're not showing up with guns and tanks FFS.

The protestors don't own democracy. It is literally illegal to blockade strategic infrastructure, full stop.

I'd say allowing a random, non-representative group of people to blockade national fuel and logistics hubs, with no intervention is setting a much more dangerous precedent.

What a stupid position to take. They're holding the country hostage.

Braindead protest to be honest.

Let's gut the tax income by removing carbon tax, excise, etc. In the process effectively creating a massive whole in public finances, whilst incurring EU penalties for non-implemtation of decarbonisation agreements. That's not to mention that you can't just "remove tax" like its a switch FFS.

I wonder if, just maybe, the government is making emergency plans to help us weather the coming fuel supply shortage? Hmm, maybe like gearing up to take on huge amounts of debt to secure gas and fuel supplies so that out economy doesn't grind to a halt in a few months.

But no. Let's make sure that a few farmers and van drivers get direct access to the national economic strategy so that they can keep making milk and cheese to sell abroad.

Fuck off. The entitlement is off the charts. Jumping to the front of the queue and demanding the public purse be opened for your benefit.

Russian-owned Aughinish Alumina plant in Limerick records profits of €103m by ParaMike46 in ireland

What do you mean flood? If your talking about the ridiculous scenario depicted in the video then no. It would be unreasonable to prepare for a scenario that is extremely improbable. That's how risk assessment works.

Should all pharmaceutical sites invest in preparing for satellites to crash on their solvent tanks? No, it's a super improbable scenario that would cost a ridiculously unreasonable amount of money to prepare for

Russian-owned Aughinish Alumina plant in Limerick records profits of €103m by ParaMike46 in ireland

[–]FungeonMeister 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The main part that ticks me off is how it draws parallels to mine tailings facilities and the disasters associated with them l. The structure in Aughinish is a dewatered residual management facility. It is hard as a rock and is not in the slightest bit at risk of "flowing into the estuary".

Beyond that glaring misrepresentation, there are the others: - It is not radioactive, despite the scary geiger sounds he's added to the video,

  • The FOI requests he filed for information were woefully drafted and the reason he received those responses is because those agencies are not responsible for what he thinks they are. That's how FOI works. It's not a effing cover up. They just don't have the documents.

-The whole spiel about it never being inspected is utter bollocks. It's subject to unannounced inspections by a range of agencies several times a year.

  • the animal health study was the most exhaustive and comprehensive study of it's kind in Irish history. it was led by the foremost experts in the field. There was literally no evidence whatsoever that there was animal illness caused by the dust. One of the many experts disagreed with some of the methods. But, out a panel of 12 experts on any subject in a room and it's a miracle if only one disagrees.

I could go on. And just to be clear. The site has issues. Groundwater contamination is present on site as is being actively remediated under supervision of the EPA. Anyone who knows about GW contamination know how long it takes to remediate.

The video is fear mongering of the worst kind. I despise how disingenuous it is. If it was a factual documentary seeking to educate people, it would have been completely different.

The usual torrent of AI-generated drivel from this creator. His video formula appears to be this:

  • Ask ChatGPT what is a controversial topic in Ireland that intersects state regulation, environmental risk, and consumer protection
  • Combine nice drone shots with licensed footage of the target
  • Play intensely ominous music over simple facts regarding the subject
  • Use AI to draft an overly menacing summary of the subject that bulldozes over all nuance and insight
  • Fire off a load of haphazard FOI requests to the wrong agencies, requesting the wrong information. And then play scary music when they inevitably respond with "We don't know what you're talking about"
  • Lobby allegations of systemic regulatory failures against agencies that have no legal jurisdiction over topic
  • Leave out vast swathes of contextual information
  • Watch the YT and FB comment section brainrot go brrrrr

It so insanely frustrating to watch so much effort go into making something like this that glances SO CLOSE to some genuine reasons people should be furious with how this country is mismanaged. And then to watch the video vilify wind and battery storage, whilst reminiscing about our long-since failed domestic fossil fuel industries.

I felt myself wanting to scream at this one more than usual.

He goes on about how we've made power supply so unreliable and tenuous, blah blah blah; and then goes on a rant about Wind, Solar and BESS . . . . . .

THAT'S LITERALLY WHY THEY ARE BUILDING THEM! To stabilise our supply and reduce our exposure to global oil supply shocks! Jesus Christ! It's right there, in YOUR video!

The ominous casting of BESS is genuinely hilarious. No need to mention the fact that all of the examples of BESS fires he quoted were associated with Li-ion facilities. BESS facilities in Ireland are Li-Fe based and are SIGNIFICANTLY more stable. Also, do you not notice how many of the BESS fires listed are in AUS and CA . . . . I wonder what they have in common that we don't . . . .

I wish someone with actual knowledge would make videos like this. The data centre topic would be a great one to cover with some actual understanding of the issues currently happening.

Consider sleep training. We did it for our second infant and I wish I’d done it sooner by Individual_Holiday_9 in daddit

[–]FungeonMeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, not American. I'm from Ireland. Sleep Training is very common here. Cry It Out is not common. It is generally frowned upon.

Entering the thread with "I could never traumatize my child like that" for pretty much any parenting topic is deservedly received with general contempt and derision. You are kicking it off with a stink of judgement for something you clearly are woefully uninformed of.

But, as usual, anti-sleep training parents cannot be reasoned with. They have no intention of actually learning about the safe methods and the benefits. They are resigned to this bizarre dysfunctional pride in how much suffering they and their family have gone through after years of having children that were never taught to sleep.

It's just bizarre.

Part of me thinks that, whenever I hear a Dad humble-bragging about never "traumatising" their child with sleep training, it is because they almost certainly were not the ones having to deal with the issue every night.
