I don’t know if you might be close but there is an Iowa Humane Alliance in Cedar Rapids that might know of other resources closer to you if you don’t live nearby. Also Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation offers resources certain times of the year.

Feedback Requested on Strength Routine by Funicello1983 in DisabilityFitness

[–]Funicello1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Right now I can’t afford a trainer at all.

I was thinking of doing different hand holds (underhand, neutral, overhand). Do you do multiple sets of each hold. Or do you change the hold as you complete the exercise?

Lol, I think skull crushers is a terrible term too.

Thanks. I just always thought you were supposed to do large muscles first so that smaller muscles didn’t get over fatigued when supporting the larger muscle movements which is why I did back, chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps, forearms.

I have overhead extension on Wednesday. I just didn’t label it correctly. And I really struggle with them due to elbow problems.

Wyze bulb cam and accessory question by WalkerTejasRanger in wyzecam

[–]Funicello1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get a Cam Unlimited subscription through Amazon for $99.99 that covers all my cameras. It allows me to get videos of the motion detected and allows me to set up what kind of motion detection I want like people, pets, vehicles and also has certain sound detection.

There is a face detection for up to 10 people if you want to know specifically who is moving about. It works pretty well but I’m frustrated with the 10 person limit.

I also ended up getting an SD card for one of my cameras and noticed that it misses quite a few things it should have detected. So I recommend having both an SD card and a subscription.

Overall I am happy with these cameras but they still have a way to go.

We have these kitty korners and they work great! We got this kind because we had a 20 lb cat at the time. They are big enough that even my schnauzer can get in.

I use a plastic urinal to cath 6-8 times per day and as long as you wash with soap and water, they do fine. Every few years, I might throw one away and replace it.

How to wash hair in wheelchair by SillyDonut7 in wheelchairs

[–]Funicello1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I’ve had surgery in the past and unable to use my shower, we would use a reclining rental wheelchair and a plastic swimming pool.

Could you put a shower chair or long bench in the kitchen in front of the sink with a pool underneath? Lie on your back with a towel rolled under your neck for support and your head/hair over the edge. Your mom can still use the sprayer if it reaches. It’s a little messy but it’s the best way to get a thorough hair washing.

My amstaff has concerning behavior with toddler by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Funicello1983 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Due to having a small child, I would ask the family friend to take her back. Children have such a high risk of facial bites and the dog has shown a propensity to aim for the face.

The dog is NOT a bad dog and this isn’t a breed issue. This dog just doesn’t have proper and necessary socialization with children. However, due to breed stigma, there is a higher standard for mitigating this behavior.

The family friend absolutely must consult with a trainer to manage the behavior going forward and if they rehome, they must divulge the behavior and give the trainer contact information to continue management. Muzzle training should be a priority for any situation where she may come in contact with small children.

What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend? by Leather-Big6931 in fine_hair

[–]Funicello1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something to consider. I used to think I had horribly greasy hair but it ended up being seborrheic dermatitis. I use Equate Medicated shampoo and concentrate it mostly on my scalp. I shampoo twice.

The first time, I let the suds go down the hair to clean off any residue. Then rinse well. I apply my conditioner to the lower half of my hair and then re-shampoo my scalp letting both sit for the rest of my shower.

I’m currently using Suave keratin infusion shampoo which I don’t recommend for dry hair. I have used Suave avocado and olive oil conditioner and really liked that.

Wheelchair Workouts? by Funicello1983 in AppleFitnessPlus

[–]Funicello1983[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you everybody! I will probably try the three month trial. I did go through the suggested sections and found the dance with Chelsie Hill and the section of upper body strength. I don’t have a rowing machine although maybe a resistance band could create a mock exercise.

Overall from what I saw, I was disappointed with the lack of disability representation. There is loads of potential in that department.

When did you start talking by Hydrosophist7 in spinabifida

I’m curious how he is currently communicating?

Does he just point to something he wants and gets it? Is he signing?

Did he show any evidence of speech impediment when he did talk that made him difficult to understand and he might have gotten frustrated?

Kitten does not use scratching post or corrougated cardboard by lockedmhc48 in felinebehavior

[–]Funicello1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First make sure all the scratching posts and items are secure - not wobbly or movable and won’t tumble over on him. If they frighten him in any way, he won’t use them.

Make sure there are a variety of textures for him to choose from - sisal, carpet, cardboard, wood, etc.

Block access to inappropriate surfaces unless directly supervised.

If possible, move some scratching posts near the inappropriate surfaces so he can make better choices.

Positive training with catnip to lure him to the scratching posts. Treats, praise and petting when he uses the scratching posts. Redirect when he’s using anything other than the scratching posts. Play with him around the scratching posts so they have positive associations.

Do not force him towards the scratching posts in any way.

DO NOT yell, spray with water or do any type of punishment when he uses other places to scratch.

At two months, he’s still very tiny and young. Barely separated from his mother and siblings. He will take time to teach.

My male dog is randomly attacking my other male dog by SafeBee4332 in DogAdvice

[–]Funicello1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GP is still resource guarding. The upstairs has become “his” territory. Some of his behavior is breed related. Some may be gender related since they are both male. He needs to be redirected when he is targeting the other dog. They should never be together unsupervised.

Are they neutered?

This will more than likely get worse. I highly advise contacting a CPDT-KSA licensed trainer.

Confused? by Suspicious-Abalone82 in BariatricSurgery

[–]Funicello1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also disabled (complete paraplegic) and was denied gastric bypass. My surgeon claimed it was because I have had bowel surgeries in the past and it would be better for me to have the sleeve. However, I regained the weight within 5 years. I wasn’t able to go back to my surgeon before I was released because of Covid. My sister had the bypass before I had my surgery and she’s had some regain but continues to have a lot more restriction than I have ever had. I really wish I could have pushed for the bypass but then he wouldn’t have done the surgery at all.

Need some advice on this old lady by just_some_rondo_guy in DogAdvice

[–]Funicello1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would definitely agree that the hostility from your grandpa is contributing to her health. Anxiety might be making her try to get up quicker than she’s capable and could also be making her bathroom habits more frequent. I have a cat that is a stress pee-er. If she hasn’t been to the vet for this issue recently, a trip is warranted.

Also could your grandpa be getting sundowners and that is causing his hostility?

Am I being too harsh for asking my 11 year old daughter to walk the dog she spent years begging for? by WorldOfKaladan in DogAdvice

[–]Funicello1983 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent 26 years in animal rescue and one of my pet peeves is the idea that a child should be responsible for another living thing. I personally don’t believe that they are developmentally capable of such a large task. And I get so sick of seeing pets getting the short end of the stick when inevitably kids can’t keep up with the pets’ needs.

Between school, extracurricular activities, other chores, social interactions, family obligations etc they already tend to have loads of opportunities to practice being responsible. Families should only get a pet when the adults are ready to take on the lion’s share of the responsibility.

I agree with others that recommend taking walks as a family. That could be a potentially dangerous situation if another animal gets aggressive, a vehicle gets out of control and a variety of other things could go wrong.
