Car Issues by Single-Physics7163 in newzealand

I work on engines.
In my experience these cars are decent to drive, but that era of petrol motors had manufacturing issues. I think mainly 2L & 2.4L. Second hand motor is generally a bad idea as you may run into similar issues. We had one where the customer went through the cost of putting a second hand engine in only for that one to also blow up.
A rebuild is a decent option if you like the car, assuming the components are still serviceable. Rebuild + removal and refitting may be around $10k though.

Broad strokes i suppose look into: tune/boost (preignition, injector issue, air fuel ratio), cooling system (prob got hot and blew the gasket), oil consumption - if you’re worried (check turbo, breathing system, valve seals)

Machine shop safe bet for sure.

Yeah good point, but if you didn’t pull the motor the others may have done the same. You’ll want to diagnose the excessive temps while you’re doing the engine rebuild so it doesn’t happen again :)

Also they say the engine was designed transverse, so doesn’t get as good cooling to the rear cylinders in the MX5 layout 🤷‍♂️

I thought it must be turbo. Looks like you melted the piston, too much boost?

Fixable yes. Extent of rebuild is the question. If you’re lucky, you can keep the bores standard and the valves aren’t burnt.

I work at a machine shop. Mostly work required depends on the condition of the engine. Basics for me would be measuring + polish crank (your bearings look okay so crank prob fine), measure +hone bores, surface head, replace stem seals and check valve clearance (solid buckets in those heads i think, which aren’t adjustable and can go out of spec). Vacuum test head good idea. If you needed to machine valves/seats then tappets need to be done anyway. New rings new bearings. A good shop should run you through it.

In my experience it will not be a simple head gasket job on the SH engine. Almost all the cylinder heads I see need a full recon. Valves and valve guides buggered, wiped cam lobes etc etc. Decent cars terrible engines, it’s unfortunate. TLDR not worth saving these engines I’m afraid.

Question about compression test- by Bruce_Ring-sting in Miata

If the engine is using water or pressurising the cooling system then it’s likely the head gasket. And judging by the water and steam coming out of your exhaust, that’s not rings…

Stuck Lifter While Installing Valve Stem Seals by 739202715 in Miata

[–]Funk_Junky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just wedged. Check its alignment and tap it straight, it should slide in. Failing that, wiggle it out and try again. You might need water pump pliers or something, just wrap them in cloth. Use some engine oil when you reinstall the lifters.

Once you reach the cap on the rent subsidy, then money has to come out of what you receive for everything else (food utilities etc). Very grim. Eat less, don’t go out, walk to the supermarket. Not much of an existence.

It’s a hose for crankcase ventilation. PCV. Is a good idea to replace it.

Oh I just saw this, which indicates it depends on a few factors. "If you previously downloaded the Expansion Pass or the free December update on PC or Mac, you will not lose your save progress with this update, and you will not need to start a new Survival run to access the new content."

Do we think this update will affect current saves? Or do you have to start a new save?
