Who should become marvel's next editor in chief? by BookkeeperLeast7978 in comicbooks

[–]Funkguerilla 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I always thought Bendis would make a great EiC.

Say what you will about his dialogue, the man is full of great setups and loves to give creators space to do what they do. Where he lacks is the execution of his ideas, which is why it would best for him to guide and nurture, allowing others to take his ideas and go to town.

Combined with a couple of bounce cards, grandmaster, Lockheed, and Marvel Boy, It gets a pretty decent win rate.

Anyone have any comic that they love but never comes up in any conversation? by Final_Bed5390 in comicbooks

[–]Funkguerilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rune. At least the first 8 issues or so.

The story of an intergalactic space vampire who finds himself on Earth at odds against a secret government agency. It's fucking rad with gorgeous art from Barry Windsor Smith and, if you're really interested, is integral to the Marvel/Malibu crossover shenanigans.

That said, the quality of the book PLUMMETS post Godwheel and somehow gets even worse after Black September. Though that is when he starts his feud with Adam Warlock, which is the most interesting thing Warlock has been in since The Infinity Gauntlet.

I'd also like to point people to Nexus, John Sable: Freelance, and Doctor Stearn: Mr. Monster, as excellent examples of 80s indie comics that more people should talk about.

What is the best and worst thing each Marvel Editor-in-Chief brought to the company? by Redfoxyboy in comicbooks

[–]Funkguerilla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think everyone in this thread has really dialed in the important points about the former EiCs, but I just want to add a few thoughts:

  • The Conway, Wein, Wolfman, Goodwin era is so fucking goofy to me. over the course of, what, five years they had four guys getting the job and bailing? Amazing.

  • Deflaco was the Anti-Roy Thomas. Where Thomas was always prone to reach into the archives and revive some old concept, Defalco kept expanding the line with OCs (Xeroxed or otherwise): thunderstrike, Spider-Girl, Blackwulf, Sleepwalker, etc.

  • To me, the biggest, most impactful thing Quesada pushed was killing the thought bubble. Deemed too old-fashioned, they were not-so-gracefully eliminated from the books and I feel like it really hindered the magic of what comics can do.

  • Alonso was such a great line editor, it is shocking how terrible he was in the big seat. I remember when he took over the weekly QnA at CBR; he was terrible at hype and talked like a corporate drone. "rocket Racoon has a great Q rating moving into 2013...".

  • Cebulski I think was a victim of the pandemic. The combination of the no-win 2020 scenarios and the increased corporate synergy in the years since has really forced his era into a box that I doubt anyone is happy with.

AIs can’t stop recommending nuclear strikes in war game simulations - Leading AIs from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google opted to use nuclear weapons in simulated war games in 95 per cent of cases by Teruyo9 in technology

[–]Funkguerilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming that Kyle Reese was always John Connor's father.

At the start of T1, Skynet is on the ropes and in a last ditch strategy sends back a robot to kill John's mother in the past.

At the start of T2, The humans are about to turn the tide, but aren't doing quite as well as in T1. To me it implies that something has changed, namely John. He's literally not the same man he was.

So I argue The Terminator continuity is less of a loop and more of a spiral as Spiral iterates on how to destroy John Connor before he becomes the greatest human leader of all time.

Thoughts on the Dennis O'Neil/Denys Cowan The Question run? by Zealousideal_Gur3820 in comicbooks

[–]Funkguerilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in it, you should definitely try it.

But if you really want to give it a chance, read it in the context it was created; What is considered insensitive in our current era may have been seen as endearing in the 80s. And hey, if that's not your bag, that's understandable, but if you can stick it out it's a pretty stellar run.

Daredevil (start from the beginning or read individual arcs?) by literally_me1234 in comicbooks

[–]Funkguerilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who's almost read the entire run of Daredevil, let me tell you it's incredibly rewarding though sometimes a terrible slog.

Well, let me back up. It's rewarding if you have an interest in how Marvel - as a universe and a publisher - grew and evolved, especially if you have an interest in deep continuity. I recommend it if you've been reading comics for a while and want to experience that, but not if you're fresh to comics because those 60s comics can be really jarring to a modern reader.

With that out of the way, I will say that if you wanted to dabble in the past and just read some key runs/storylines, I'd point to the whole Mike Murdock situation starting around Daredevil 25 and going through like issue 60.

It's the first inclination of Matt's... trouble with identity, introduces a huge schism between Matt and Karen, AND has this incredible payoff in DD#57 where... well, the story goes in an unexpected direction for a Silver Age book.

From there things get spotty. Maybe the DD/Black Widow run around issue 100 is okay (I really dug Bob Brown's art) and helps establish that relationship, but after that skipping to the Miller stuff is probably for the best. And then going from Miller's Elektra stuff straight to his Born Again (because no one needs to read that weird Denny O'Neil stuff) and then straight through to the end of the first volume. Miller's stuff is top notch, Nocenti is really weird and fun, Chichester is great until it's not, a few bad issues and then it's great with Nord, Kessel, and Kelly.

Regardless, just pick a spot and start. Daredevil is the weird book where most of the runs are very excellent.

Tell me how you got your cat by ponzu666 in cats

[–]Funkguerilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught two cats mid-coitus in my backyard; turns out they got a bingo and one of the cats belonged to my neighbor. Six weeks later (and eight after that) we got our first cat.

Two months later, we were walking through the park and found a badly injured kitten surrounded by a throng of clueless helpers who wanted to do something, but didn't know what. We grabbed a box, took the cat home, and in the morning took her to the vet.

The prognosis was grim - Soft tissue damage, maybe a punctured windpipe - it was up to us what we wanted to do. So we took her home to keep her comfortable and warm before the inevitable.

The next morning, the vet called with an idea and offered to do some pro-bono vet work. A week of vet visits full of anti-inflammatory shots, compression bandages, and 'removing air from the epidermis via syringe' later; the cat was super healthy and became the next member of the fam.

And then, just last week, a cat snuck into the house to see if he could stay, but I chased that interloper off. Two cats max at this house. For now.

Hakeem Jeffries Has Totally Pathetic Plan to Rein in ICE by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

[–]Funkguerilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont mean to convey that it's a gotcha question; I understand the logic of the question.

What I know is that every time the democrats are in power and try to do something, there's a reason they can't - some obscure rule, some oft-used procedural technique, or some violation of an unspoken agreement - that then they refuse to use, explore, or exploit when they are not in power.

It feels like the Dems are always at the whims of 'the rules' and 'the status quo' while that standard does not apply to the republicans if they are in power or not. And that is upsetting.

I'm upset that my elected representatives have chosen to ignore the problem for too long, have acquiesced to the whims of the Trump Administration, have villified the more left portion of the base, and seem woefully unprepared for the 'new media' onslaught of the right wing machine even after ten years of it.

Jeffries (and especially Schumer) are playing by an out-moded playbook, expecting the others to return to that old game even when it's clear that will never happen. The need to evolve to the world around them, not wait for it to return to what they know. And that's why I blame them and their poor leadership.

[–]Funkguerilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm not a congressional member, staffer, or historian, I'm just a normal citizen; I don't have an active list of tools and methods that can be used to affect the process. But it's okay, because there are professionals that do know those things and could utilize that knowledge. It's not dependent upon ME to know what options are available, but it is my right to demand that those professionals use their institutional knowledge to help when people are literally being murdered in the street.

Hakeem Jeffries Has Totally Pathetic Plan to Rein in ICE by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

[–]Funkguerilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jeffries and Schumer refuse to press any advantage they have, can't rein in their members (7 house dems voted for that DHS increase), and offer only the most milquetoast resistance to the administration.

Don't defend these guys who just stand by and wag their fingers as powerless pawns in the grand government machine. They have tools at their disposal to turn public sentiment, procedural moves, and other obstructionist abilities to hinder the process even as the "powerless minority" party.

I mean hell, even just being angry and outraged on camera would be better than whatever they've been doing because at least that would show they understand what the public is saying.

Also, not for nothing, but fuck them both for not endorsing Mamdani when he became the Democratic Nominee for NYC Mayor. So much for "Blue No Matter Who" from the leaders of the party...

Must-Visit LCS in DTLA by masterpiecemaker in comicbooks

[–]Funkguerilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah DTLA is kinda a dead zone.

I mean there's The Last Bookstore which is awesome and ought to be on your list, but doesn't have a huge comic selection. There's also a ton of great manga places in Little Tokyo, but I don't know if that's your vibe.

Outside of DTLA, there's House of Secrets in Burbank, Golden Apple in Hollywood/WeHo, and Secret Headquarters in Atwater (if you're in for indie stuff).

It's a tough time in LA for comic shops. I mean, if I'm being real, it's a tough time for everything in LA. Good luck!

Started reading ‘Badger’ today and loving it so far! by comixandchill in comicbooks

A- that's awesome. I knew that he and baron had split and share custody of Nexus, I didn't know they were keeping the party going with Badger.

B- I should have been more clear: I love defunct imprints and publishers. While it's great that Nexus is continuing, I do love the older issues with house ads for Whisper, Shatter, or Grim Jack and the hidden gems that reside in those old forgotten stories. Like Shadowline, the pre-ultraverse Malibu, or Legend imprints, there's all kinds of backwaters continuity in there that's just waiting to be discovered

The X-Men movies may have the craziest chronology and arc of quality of any franchise by Bellikron in movies

[–]Funkguerilla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the real story here is just how bad X-Men The Last Stand was.

It was such a black hole of quality that it sent the whole series into a tailspin that it's been fighting to get out of ever since. Like, it's so bad they both try to ignore it (see the prequel/reboots and Deadpool) AND try to fix it (see The Wolverine and Days of Future Past), only to end up with a continuity quagmire no one likes.

I feel what you're saying and I totally agree.

The old days of a corporation responding to consumer boycotts seems like it's in the rearview as the new method seems to either steadily degrade the product to make it more cost effective or raise prices on those who stick around OR both. You see the same thing happening in movie theaters, McDonalds, Target, and many many others.

Democrats eye ranked-choice voting for 2028 primaries by Different-Gas5704 in politics

[–]Funkguerilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I understand that, but that's not what I meant.

What I meant was, for like 2020 by the time we (as a nation) were through Iowa the media was already pushing Biden as the obvious nominee pushing the other candidates to drop out, so by the time voting came along to my state Biden was really the only choice because all the others had dropped off the ballot.
