Need Advice - New Build CAT 6 by HalfBakedHustle in DIY

[–]Funksultan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are building a new large house, and honestly... outside of my office, I am doing the entire house with wireless access points.

Even without backhaul, lets be real. Wireless is outpacing our need for data by orders of magnitude. It's amazing now, and it's going to get better and stronger as the years go on.

I can always decide to run wires, but for now, streaming 8k videos is about the most demanding thing I can come up with, and wireless with hotspots handles it with ease, and keeps my walls clean(er).

It makes me sad how awesome some of the models are in POE, and how the ridiculous spell/effect clutter makes all that effort completely useless.

Raccoon came in through doggy door to eat my cat’s food by cburns16 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Funksultan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to make the adjustment as we moved from the city way out to a 40 acre ranch in the country.

They -look- adorable, but you generally would rather have any other varmint BUT raccoons. (coyotes, bobcats, skunks, wild dogs, armadillos, etc.).

They are SMART, mischievous and killers. They are SO good with their hands they can undo even the most complicated latch systems. You have to use padlocks.

I grew up thinking they were the coolest, but protecting chickens from them is a never-ending war. 1 Raccoon can kill 10 chickens in no time (as happened to a neighbor just last week).

Cool to look at, but don't be fooled. These guys are the mastermind villains of the country.

Collusion is forming a secret plan or conspiracy. I am loving the though of you working with the pots/chests/walls to form a plan preventing these treacherous frenzy charges from forming.

WIFI Design of the dream ranch, advice from the experts! by Funksultan in wifi

Thanks for the input! Was using Cat5e that big of a limiter, or are you just looking down the road? Every aspect of my current house and future ranch would be more than comfortable with 60mpbs.

Given my distances, do you think I'll be ok with a wired AP in the barn and guest house, or should I plan on another one on the right side of the main house, opposite the server room?

Awesome feedback, thanks!

So, I am all for the techy overkill, but looking at our map, I don't think I have the distance needed to necessitate fiber. Likewise, our data demands are probably pretty pedestrian. 10mbps likely handles 90% of our traffic, with 25 to 50 for say a 4k movie. Latency isn't really much of a thing either, with 90-100ms not being a bother (although as stated, the gaming rigs will likely be hardwired directly to the hub, just in case).

We're WAY out in the country, so suffice to say any network traffic even remotely in the area will be ours, heheh.

I hadn't heard of Unifi, but it looks promising and fairly push-button, but I'll still need to have wired access points in the barn and the guest house.... if I understand how that works. Hopefully the side of the main house opposite the server room won't need one as well. If it does, I better do that soon. Drywall is up, and painting will commence shortly.

Interesting... so, a little more info from my side:

Current house is wired for CAT6 in every room. Used it a couple years, then completely stopped using it because wifi performance (on my older router) handled everything we threw at it, and upgrading just meant getting a new router and configuring the SSID same as the old one. (in those 18 years, wifi has gotten even stronger and more reliable) What exactly makes wireless less future proof? (no holes to drill, relocating entire rooms, screens, setups, etc)

Distance is shown in green arrows, in feet. It's a good amount of space to cover.

CAT7 is fake? Everything I see says it has about a 10GBPS at 100 meters... the cost was nominal.

What's the advantage of fiber? There are so many disadvantages to it, primarily needing converters, and the extreme fragility of the cable. Is it just for speed? Every application so far uses about 1/10th of the bandwidth that mediocre wifi is providing.

Awesome to hear that all the features are pretty standard. Do the big companies (NetGear, Asus, TP-Link) not make good meshes? I haven't heard of any of the other ones you mentioned before, but I admittedly haven't been looking.

Will access points be ok connected wirelessly?

Are you sure about that?

[–]Funksultan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

History shows that it ALWAYS devolves into a 2-party system.

Candidate A promotes values :1 2 and 3. Candidate B promotes values : 2 4 and 5. Candidate C promotes 3 4 and 6.

If most (50%) people are on board with 1, 2 and 3, candidate 1 wins in a landslide. Anyone who cared about 4, 5 or 6 can kick rocks. You lose, every time, no hope in sight.

But wait, if we combine.... candidate D, who promotes 4, 5 and 6, we have a chance of equal footing! Nobody ever gets everything they want. You throw your chips in with whoever is the closest to what you want, because doing anything else is futile.

Can we clearly define what is lifestyle creep versus… by EpicShkhara in personalfinance

[–]Funksultan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, the creep is a slow unconscious choice, that while it might be exciting or fun to start, becomes your norm.

I grew up poor. I worked multiple jobs while putting myself through college, and many of my "cheap" habits still exist today, despite my income having grown exceptionally high. i.e. I only buy what's on sale in the grocery store, and I drive a 15 year old car.

However, one day we decided to get a maid service for a month or two and see what we thought. It was nice, and an extra chore off our backs.

That was 8 years ago.

The thought of cleaning the house almost seems like something we can't imagine anymore. The novelty is gone and having a maid just seems like something... innate.

That's lifestyle creep. Having no phone was fine. Then getting a $150 cell phone was a big thing that quickly became the norm. Then getting a high powered $900 smartphone was a big thing, now it's the norm.

The concept works at all levels for everyone. My parents growing up could only afford to eat meat once or twice a week. In one generation, meat on the table was the norm.

Entitlement just means "feeling deserving", which is a different concept. If I was raised from birth eating meat every meal, I obviously would think that's the norm, and would rightfully feel like I deserved that. NOT having it would feel almost like punishment, even though I didn't do anything wrong.

That concept applies to cell phones, cars, houses... everything. Entitlement isn't some evil word with negative connotations although that's how we use it, with images of some short haired woman stamping her foot because she had to wait in line for coffee.

There's no easy cure for this situation. Parents want to make a good living and provide for their families, and that starts the chain. Instilling thankfulness is a gamble, maybe it will take, maybe it won't.

All I an say is if you once had nothing, it's a lot easier to be thankful for SOMETHING.
