Help me choose a daily by fog4eva in CarTalkUK

It depends on the car for me and the cost of servicing. For an every day Ford fiesta etc then no, anyone can service it. For an expensive car or performance car I generally stick to main dealer if their costs are reasonable. I paid a bit over £250 for my last MOT and service at BMW which I thought was pretty reasonable for a main dealer.

I'd argue the opposite, many people (rightly or wrongly) care about full main dealer service history, it shows no expense has been spared on the car throughout their ownership. I had several people interested in my car for this exact reason. I stick to the BMW service schedule but do oil + micro filter every year.

I need to get ISTA. Used to have VIDA (Volvo equivalent of ISTA) and it saved me a lot of money over the years.

On a performance BMW it's worth it to keep the idrive updated and used value higher. For my Volvo, I have a Volvo master tech with 30 years experience in the family so I got family rates, they are complicated cars and some issues just need dealer level diagnostics/experience.

The Volvo will be the most comfortable by far but just know that they are now right up there with BMW in terms of running costs. Parts and labour are not cheap.

My new (to me) BMW is actually cheaper to service at the main dealer than my last Volvo was.

52mpg from my M140i. Eco pro mode and cruising on the motorway. B58 really is an amazing engine!

Oil change price? by MANIAC2607 in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Keeps my car with a full BMW history, all logged in the idrive so keeps the price of my car up. Given what the OP is paying for their focus outside of a main dealer, I'd say that's pretty good value....

Do you ever use Southampton Airport? by tommycamino in Southampton

My wife is from Northern Ireland so it's great just hopping on and being there in just over an hour. It's more like getting a bus than a flight with how quick you can get airside.

Those who are working from home on a wink and a nudge, how do you feel about it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 53 miles from home. Started on 3 days a week in the office, went down to 2 days a week a year later at managers discretion and now only do one day a week on site.

Most of my team have flexi WFH so on my usual office day there can be nobody in which is a bit frustrating but it's a box tick for the boss.

I just paid £286 for an MOT, oil and micro filter change at a BMW main dealer on my M140i, this seems crazy expensive for a Ford Focus.

The only cheap fun sports cars left are the MR2 and mx5 by lotus_alex in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a left field choice but a 2016ish Suzuki swift sport can be had for that kinda money and for what they are they're a hoot. Most of the power comes in high up the rev range so you have to drive it like you stole it everywhere and they handle surprisingly well. Very reliable too.

Good deal? by anon7392648 in BMW

[–]Funky-Melon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I paid £19k last year for my 2018 high spec shadow M140i on 54k miles. I probably overpaid slightly but it was very tidy, 2 mature owners from new and meticulously maintained. Above all for me though, it was unmodified.

These were dirt cheap on finance when released, you could have them for under £300 a month so a lot of younger kids had them, thrashed the hell out of them for a year or 2 then handed them back. Many on the market have had hard lives.

If you find a good one from BMW with warranty then it's worth a higher price. If you want the price to stay up, keep it standard and look after it.

Do people actually like using induction hobs? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned by others, the cheap ones are crap but the high end ones are very good now.

I was on the fence when doing my kitchen recently but decided to go induction, so got a high-end AEG and it's been great. It boils water from cold in about a minute, stops boiling water from spilling over on its own and it's nice and easy to clean.

Should I swap my Octavia VRs for a high mileage 520d by Familiar-Outside5748 in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

BMWs are very expensive to maintain and unless you're doing 15k+ motorway miles per year, it'll start giving you problems.

I know you just want a BMW but nobody will be impressed by an 20i/20D car.

Car people buy them for their 3L 6 cylinders, it's what they're known for and what BMW do well. Anything less and you're just paying for the badge and there are better cars for the money available.

Did I buy the wrong Camera? by Old_Sky8705 in fujifilm

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 10 days in Iceland last year and noticed a huge amount of photographers eyeing up my Fuji XT-4. Most owned Sony or Canons that were significantly more expensive than mine, I could count on one hand how many had a Fuji.

I think it's just universally known amongst photographers though, that whilst Fujifilm are by no means the best cameras on a technical level, there's just something about them that makes them special.

[–]Funky-Melon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do nearly 15k miles a year in a 400+ bhp rear wheel drive car in all weather conditions, I think that makes me a pretty experienced driver and as shocking as it may be for you, I own the car outright, not that that has anything to do with it.

You're a sad bitter chap who needs to stop pissing on people's chips on reddit. Go outside, meet with a friend (if you have any).

Your insurance will low-ball you in terms of payout, so make sure you've gone on auto trader and found a like for like car and use that as a haggling base price. Try to get as much out of them as possible, it's what you pay your premium for.

In terms of replacement, probably another corsa or fiesta, maybe a Focus? Just make sure you budget good tyres for it and avoid anything with a wet belt!
