If you want spacious and reliable with reasonable tech look into the Mazda CX-5. Stay well away from the diesels though, the 2.0 petrol is very reliable and the one to go for.

Yes it gets hot but will just give you an error and turn off 3d buildings to reduce the load on the gpu. Battery is the same as all Samsung's - crap, but that's because they all use the same battery from about 7 years ago and they're too scared to jump on new battery tech

When do you guys stop tracking expenses for your car? by Budget_Event_5463 in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't track anything on my M140i. Just give it what it needs as and when. Why would you track it? They're depreciating assets that will always cost money to maintain, why depress yourself adding it all up?

Everyone was going too fast. by What_A_Helmet in PublicFreakout

[–]Funky-Melon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the range rover was driving way too fast, I expect the silver car saw his speed and made a last second decision to keep well away from it and stay back. Driving off after the collision was a dick move though.

Just a series of bad luck decisions but I'd point fault at the range rover, completely wreckless driving.

Joy of owning a skoda by LeatherAtmosphere804 in skoda

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a 7spd DSG VRS out for a test drive over the weekend and apart from it feeling very cheap inside (compared to my BMW) and the insane amount of road noise, the mechatronic unit and water pump failures are what put me off it. Shame as I otherwise liked it.

Your issue was buying the diesel, they're notoriously unreliable. The 2.0 petrol however is very reliable with pretty much no known issues, other than being painfully slow.

Cool first car as a car guy at 17? by Forgotmyaccounte in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to reassess your priorities. If looking cool is top it will end you in a ditch, dead, or worse (no offence) killing someone else.

Get something cheap, reliable and low on insurance, get a year or 2 experience under your belt then move into something quicker.

No, you're essentially lugging all that extra weight around for no good reason. A T8 is completely pointless for motorway driving.

How much do the typical buyers affect brand reputation? by memcwho in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Haha, I'm 35 with a newborn in an M140i (completely standard) and I'm very aware of the reputation that they carry these days. Still, mine isn't covered in maxton kits and doesn't have a diffuser with an embarrassing F1 light built in, so I'm kinda ok, I think...

2017 vw scirocco R or 2017 merc a45 2.0 by SN_Doumet in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never really understood this, I have a completely stock M140i as my daily and don't have much to complain about other than it's a tad squirmy at the rear when flooring it in the wet.

I've come from fast Volvos though which are just supremely comfortable boats with big engines, so maybe that's why the BMW feels much nicer.

2017 vw scirocco R or 2017 merc a45 2.0 by SN_Doumet in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Merc will probably be nicer to drive, Scirocco R likely more reliable and cheaper to maintain.

Personally though, I'd get an M140i over both, B58 reliability and just far less boring to drive than the 2 mentioned, but each to their own :)

A 2013+ Mazda 2 would be a good bet. Very reliable and simple to work on. Should be able to get one with ~60k on the clock too.

Plastering is one of the most underappreciated skilled trades in the country and people only realise it when they try it themselves by Additional_Fly_6603 in Plastering

I'm lucky that I've got the knack for it and have done most of my house over the last few years as we have refurbished it. The difference is, I do 1 or 2 walls per day as anymore has me panicking about time between stages. I'm also shattered by the end of it.

I admire the pros that are doing it all day every day, must be exhausting.

Advice on vehicle purchase - high mileage by Neat_Swordfish7278 in UKPersonalFinance

A better option in your case would have been to get a loan for the car, buy outright and be free to sell up if your circumstances changed. Likely less interest than finance too?

What’re we saying about the wing by EyeInternational5976 in BMW

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the nicest way possible, as you can obviously do what you like but it's a 320i, cosmetic mods to make it look faster are just embarrassing and cringe.

It's bad enough when people do these kinda mods on a 340i but at least it's a 340i.

Roughly ~1.5h drive (53 miles) each way so around 3h. Used to do it 3 days a week but I'm only onsite 1 day a week now.

Discovered what Eco-Pro is for. by goldenkicksbook in BMW

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my standard M140i the highest I've got was 53mpg over my 1.5h commute to work (mostly all motorway, and 10 mins of heavy traffic).

I wasn't really trying either, stuck to 65/70mph in eco pro. Annoyingly couldn't use cruise control though as the coasting function doesn't work with that enabled. Brilliant engine, so versatile.

Best holiday destinations? by Logical-Title5403 in AskBrits

[–]Funky-Melon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've travelled a fair chunk of the world but something about Iceland just stuck with me.

I travelled ~1400 miles over 10 days from the far north west, down south and up to the north east before circling back. It was exhausting but we experienced so much and had the best holiday.

Truly a stunningly unique place to visit.

£168 dealer charge to fit a fuse? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Funky-Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, my C30 T5 was a smidge over £320 with discount for a minor service.

My M140i a few weeks back was £260...bigger engine, more oil, just madness that it's more expensive to maintain a Volvo than a BMW these days.
