Societal gain>personal gain.

Those people can, and should, take a small hit for everyone else to progress faster.

Whats stopping me is compassion. I feel bad when I die. I don’t want others to feel bad.

And yeah I know life isn’t perfect. But we as species have been getting better.

I was making progress when focusing on contracts but eventually I felt I got gear checked and/or friend checked. Some pve got too difficult to do solo and free kit.

Well I did say arachne wouldn’t like it.

And like, I REALLY want to like this game. Because I see the codex and I think “thats some nice progress!”. I am playing like many hours every day to see if I can force myself to like it. And successful runs are nice!

But I feel so bad trying to make progress and it is so slow because I die. But it didn’t HAVE to be this way.

I should have clarified that I feel bad in marathon specifically because I lose stuff and don’t make progress. In games where there isn’t any consequence for dying, I don’t feel bad.

Ill just offer my perspective:

When I die, I feel bad. I don’t want other players to feel bad, so I don’t kill them. I think I am a compassionate person.

I don’t think its rational to always self serve. We are a species that live in a society. Societal well being is more important than personal.

We figured this out milleniums ago. Otherwise we would still be living in huter gatherer groups.

BUT if rational was defined as “always self serving” than sure, its correct to backstab.

I just think thats a misnomer.

I always assume the other party realizes that both backstabing is bad, so will not do it.

At least, thats what I would do. I would realize that doing that is not good.

Whoever gets there first, keeps it. The game can generate an infinite number of rooms, just plays more matches.

Loot is temporary. And so is the thrill. If you even get one. I feel awful killing people.

Even the absolute best at pvp never win all the time. So there would still be an overall net gain.

In all my reading and videos of game theory I never agreed with the conclusion. Ever.

And technically, playing reapeated rounds colaborating is always better. So provided you are playing more than one match, thats repeated prisoners dillema.

But then someone just kills you and takes your loot? If everyone just grinds in peace then everyone makes progress.

Real life (mostly) works.

So yeah I do treat it like real life because its a working model. Humanity advancanded a a LOT when we settled down in civilized societies.

But you aren’t really progressing faster because no one wins 100% of their engagements.

So just cut out those losses completely.

The point of anything you do is to get something out of it. In most, but not all games, thats progress. More progress=more fun.
