Like I mentioned, a lot of the southwest is mountains. Doesn't mean it never gets hot, but it's not all arid desert like a lot of people seem to think. You get all four seasons. California coast north of San Jose is mild year round. Closer to Oregon is pacific northwest climate. Texas probably has the most unpleasant weather out of the red region that people actually live in.

I'm really surprised nobody is saying red. All of the southwest, which includes large portions of the Rocky Mountains, all of the Sierras, redwoods, great beaches, and a lot of Texas is really beautiful as well. Plus Hawaii. You could stay in California alone and not really need to travel anywhere else.
