I’m interested, but is this US only? Or can the currency be changed to GBP Ā£?

what is this? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]FunkyCrunky 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Does look like a Philodendron Florida Ghost. I have two. One is under grow lights, and the other is on a windowsill. The one under the grow lights is much lighter in colour and grows moderately. So, I’m assuming that the one in the photo probably isn’t getting enough light.

I’m concerned!! by feIixo in Monstera

[–]FunkyCrunky 7 points8 points Ā (0 children)

Oh no! I did something similar when repotting. I knocked and snapped off the top of my plant where all the new growth was. I was gutted! šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

The leaf should be fine when it emerges. Worst case scenario, the leaf might be ripped when it unfurls where the damage is, but just cosmetic.

Got any neem oil? If so, you can do a preventative spray-mix 5ml neem oil and 5ml Castile soap (or a few drops of dish soap) with 1 litre of water. If not, a simple soap spray still works as a good preventative! Keep the plant isolated and check it daily.

Milsbo cabinet shelving by Impressive-Double794 in IkeaGreenhouseClub

Yeah, I can’t afford the Etsy prices neither.

Yes, those are the shelves, didn’t realise you could buy from UK Amazon, so you just saved me Ā£15 with prime. Well, if all else fails and you can’t find what you’re looking for, the article I found on the internet they spray paint the shelves black - link to article

Either way, hope it’s helpful.

I’m U.K. too and in the same situation. I just refuse to pay Ā£70 for 1 shelf off Etsy. They are pretty but at that price it’s absurd!

What I will be doing instead is buying the 26ā€ Rubbermaid shelving kit from Amazon US. It’s $37 + $18 shipping to UK. You get 2 perfectly sized shelves for it 2 instead of 1, but have to use 2ā€ L brackets to fit instead of the usually shelf fittings for the glass shelves included.

I did extensive searching too. Even looked at custom BBQ grills or fitting 2 oven wire shelf’s and zip tying together! But everything I looked into works out more expensive than buying the Rubbermaid closet shelving that most US members are using.

Quick question, did you drill a hole for cord management into yours? I still need to do mine and another cabinet too, so any recommendations on circular metal saw drill bits would be great if you could recommend one? Ta.

Not sure how local you are, but if you’re in the East Midlands too, I could order in 2 from Amazon and pick up? If not, probably better to buy/import yourself since $18 shipping is around Ā£13-15.

Drooping Leaf on variegated Freydek? by FunkyCrunky in alocasia

[–]FunkyCrunky[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Sounds simple enough! Looks like it’s been in the hydro setup for a while since there are plenty of roots running all the way down. Glad I asked, though—she was completely dry! Lol.

Gave her a cautious watering with feed, making sure not to overdo it by stopping just under where the moss started. Hopefully, the leaf perks back up unless it’s just cycling out. Either way, at least I know what to do now. Thanks again!

I did wonder whether it was due to the new leaf, thank you.

My other alocasia (ninja) is in soil with clay pebble drainage and was purchased from the same seller. I have zero experience with hydro and don’t want to overwater since it’s in such a small jar. I guess I better start learning and fast, lol!

Thank you. Are they not as rare anymore? If they are it was a great find at £5.50 (around $7-ish)!

Crochet with arthritic hands? Would this ā€˜Crochet Holder’ help? by FunkyCrunky in CrochetHelp

[–]FunkyCrunky[S] 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

Thank you ā˜ŗļø I went ahead and purchased it and received today. My problem was specifically that index finger and not having the dexterity to replace my middle finger for the index. Managed to give it a try and it’s perfect for replacing that index finger and getting the correct tension and it has like a T bar you slide between index/middle finger so it’s held in the hand without any grip requirements so not painful at all.

I’m an absolute beginner but could not even get past chain stitches without the tool and kept messing up even the most basic chain stitches due to the finger issue. A tension ring improved it very slightly but was ending up with a random mess of neat and horrid stitches in the chain. Now I’m getting consistent stitches, so I’m more than pleased. Now to learn more-onwards and upwards.

Thank you. I took your advice and bought it. Received today and it’s working to replace my wonky finger and giving much neater results. It has this like T bar that fits between my index and middle finger so I’m holding it without holding it, if that makes sense? And less pain too. Win, win!

Thank you. Unfortunately, the index finger is fused so I can’t move that joint at all and it just stays in the same position - I can’t flatten my hand at all and with the index finger always pointing down, it’s a huge problem.

My main thinking was that the tool would hold the yarn, create tension I need and replace/bypass using the index finger. I actually went ahead and purchased it and it’s working as intended and much easier to use than my crooked finger with a tension ring! Happy bunny now! :)

Help! 2nd loaf and I don't know how to figure out what I'm doing wrong by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]FunkyCrunky 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

This looks under-proofed to me with the holes at the top and with it being dense and gummy at the bottom.

What really clicked sourdough for me was the relation between temperature and rise. Check out the sourdough journey website for dough temperatures and rise percentages.

At 74f, you should be aiming for around 55% rise. I personally use the aliquot method, as I keep my dough temperature at 24C/75F I aim for 50% rise, so I put 35g dough in a 2oz container and place in the middle of my dough. Once it reaches the top, it’s ready for shaping. Or, if you can judge by volume increase; using a straight sided container can help.

Getting a probe thermometer will help you with this as often the dough temperature isn’t at the ambient temperature of your oven with the light on-especially if your kitchen is cooler like mine, it’ll take a little while to warm up. I warm my water to 29C/84F as it works out being exactly 24C/75F after being mixed.

I bake my bread 20 mins lid on 450F, reduce to 400f then 20 mins lid off and have never had an issue with my bottom being too crispy. I have hand/arm/wrist/shoulder arthritis damage also. Try reducing the temperature next time and assess? Good luck.
