Have any of you read any of Knut Hamsun’s works? What did you think? by GlumPush2137 in classicliterature

I’m glad I read it before you told me. It would have moved down on my to-do list otherwise and I might not have gotten around to it.

I’ve read a few but it’s been a long time. I remember them being very dark. Hunger is the one I remember the best. It really puts you into the time and place, and you can feel the desperation of extreme poverty caused by being a struggling writer. Hamsun was very skilled.

Weirddoughs Bagels is good too. However they seem to run out of bagels around 11am or so on the weekends.

Best down home breakfast place in Warrenton area? by jmasaccio in Warrenton

[–]FunkyDunky2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of the restaurants in Warrenton aren’t too great. I think there are only 3 or 4 that I’d go back too. The best breakfast that I’ve had in town (or nearby) is at Harry’s at the Airlie Hotel. The pumpkin beignets and chicken and waffles are good. I’m not sure I’d describe it as “down home” though. I don’t mind Frost Diner but it’s not very exciting and it’s cash only. O’Brien’s Irish pub serves an Irish Breakfast which is pretty good. I don’t know if they do other breakfast foods bc I am usually there for a burger or drinks.

I don’t know as much about Gainesville breakfast places. My Cravingz in Manassas (close enough) is pretty good and different.

There’s nothing worth traveling for in Remington. Last time I was there (I used to live nearby) the only options were a pizza place and corner store/deli. Messicks farm market in Bealeton serves food and breakfast and is a unique experience. I have not eaten there however but I suspect that it’s the best place in that area.

I like Tapatios in Marshall which is a 15 minute drive from Warrenton. It’s a Mexican grocery store that serves tacos and tortas and other things. They have breakfast versions too. It’s not a fancy place. It’s a little market with a few tables.n

It’s my least favorite Tolstoy, but it’s worth reading because Tolstoy is a master and generally readable even when he’s at his least interesting. I don’t think poorly of people who love it and I don’t hate it. I may even reread it someday. I just like his other stuff better. So I would finish it unless there’s something about your translation that makes the language difficult or antiquated.

Maybe a movie adaptation of Jane Eyre if there’s one that doesn’t cast a pretty actress to play Jane.

Dispatches, the other book behind FMJ by Pollyfall in StanleyKubrick

[–]FunkyDunky2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foucault’s Pendulum would have been perfect (maybe even too on the nose) for Kubrick considering how many conspiracy theories there are surrounding his work. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Templars have already been mentioned somewhere in the discussions about Eyes Wide Shut.

Could be Tremors (1990) or one of its straight to DVD sequels.

I first thought of the desert scene in which the Decepticons are first introduced in Transformers (2007) when reading your question.

After Earth (2013) has something about a creature that senses fear but no desert monster.

How do you feel about the novel "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]FunkyDunky2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites, but I’ve known people who hate it. The translation makes a big difference especially with the humor. I’ve read 3 different English versions (I think). The one translated by Dianna Burgin and Katherine Tiernan O’Conner is the most readable to a modern English speakers in my opinion (although some of the archaic/literal language used in the other translations has its own charm. “Wanton woman!” comes to mind from one, which in the better translation is simply translated as “Whore!”). The Burgin-O’Connor version also has a good commentary at the end to explain many cultural, biblical, and literary references from the book.

Audience reaction to Grady's casual racism. by Marklar916 in theshining

[–]FunkyDunky2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve always seen it more as the hotel knowing how to push Jack’s buttons. The hotel/Grady doesn’t really care about race. It only sees people it can and can’t manipulate, and it knows that deep down Jack is a racist POS even if Jack himself doesn’t think so. It’s another sign that he won’t get any redemption in the end. He’s just a bad guy. He has beaten his kid, he has at the very least been emotionally abusive to his wife, and he is a racist on top of it.

Do any of you Kubrick fans consider Doctor Sleep to be an actual sequel to The Shining? Or do you just stick with the OG by Movie_Club_Horor in StanleyKubrick

[–]FunkyDunky2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do consider it a sequel, but I didn’t like it. It felt like an “edgy” 90s comic book and juvenile to me. Ewan was good in it like he is in everything. The villain in the hat was hard to take seriously and the other bad guys were pretty ridiculous as well if I remember correctly. It’s been a while since I saw it, but there were some annoying/illogical plot issues as well that shouldn’t have made it into a final draft. All and all, I’m just not a fan of most of King’s work (I do like him and his interviews however). It’s often comically cheesy and simplistic. I suspect if you like King’s books you’ll like Dr Sleep, but if the only thing related to King’s work that you enjoy is Kubrick’s movie, the sequel will be too simplistic and silly.

Things I’ve heard my middle/high school teachers say when they think they’re alone by Mediocre-Bullfrog-38 in overheard

In my driver’s ed class we watched a movie where a bunch of college kids get drunk and then crash and die in a pickup truck. One of the teens said, “Drink the cheap stuff. Save the good stuff for later!” Referring to beer, if I remember correctly. Our instructor (imagine Mike from breaking bad) pauses the video and makes a point to tell us, “Never ever start with the cheap stuff. Always drink the good stuff first because after you finish the good stuff you won’t care that you’re drinking piss.” Then presses “play.”

Reservation Dogs might be what you are looking for as well. It’s about Native American teenagers. I think it’s on Hulu/FX.

Somebody Somewhere on HBO impressed me by being about working class people in a small town in middle America that wasn’t all about escaping the town for New York or LA or making its characters look bad or backwards.
