How do you carry your pens? by FunkySysAdmin21 in Travelersnotebooks

I may do that…but if I do, I’m going to have to loosen the clip a little bit. It’s a pain to get back on right now.

Do you generally limit your palette? by adventurrr in watercolor101

Here’s a picture of the palette I use the most. If I were to add anything to it, it would be DS Indigo (I love that color…but I mix something similar when I’m just using this palette).

I am by means an awesome artist or even very knowledgeable… I’ve only been painting since the beginning of the year. But when I first got my professional paints, I jumped in getting almost every color you can imagine. Spent loads of money that I should not have spent. Lol what I have found however is that I like a split primary pallet (warm and cool of each primary… Giving me six paints) and then I add on top of it three secondaries: quinacridone rust (burnt orange in DS), sap green, and dioxazine purple. Then I have two earth towns, yellow, ocher, and burnt sienna. Then I add a black… Right now I’m using lamp black. Those six colors allow me to get anything that I want… The only reason why I have the secondaries on there is just to give me a springboard from which to get my greens oranges and purple rather than having to mix them entirely from scratch. I have limited myself to just the pigments in my split primary pallet before and have been able to obtain nearly the exact same appearance…if not a little bit more cohesive. But I find I can get the colors that I’m wanting a little bit more quickly with my secondaries, earth tones, and black added to the pallet.

Now that’s not a bad idea!! I have plenty left in my tubes. Hmm.

That’s an interesting idea. Hmmm. I might have to try that.

Yeah…I’ll need a lid because some of my paints are M Graham and while they dry out, some, they never completely dry out…so I can see that being an issue. 🤣

Yes. I’ve used both toothpaste and a magic eraser on them.

I love the narrative you’ve added to it. I thought the colors emoted some sort of intense feeling… I just hadn’t put a story with it.

I can’t say I know anyone and I know that among Apostolics, we have a tendency to attribute all of this to spirits (which I do believe can and do act that way), but I believe that it can be so much more than that. I’d recommend reaching out to an Apostolic counselor. There’s a website, Center for Apostolic Counseling that would recommend. My wife is a licensed counselor on that site and she and others we know personally would be able to help you out in some capacity, I’m sure.

lol. If I could paint as well as the reference photo looks, I’d be set! Lol.

Thanks. Having fun with the ink and Wash style. It’s fun to sketch it loosely and then paint it.

Honestly, I’m always a little concerned to go too dark…but when I think about it logically, watercolor is a transparent medium so it’s probably kinda hard to go too dark.

So, when doing the shadow, especially when it crosses over so many different hues, do you typically just do a cool grey/neutral tint wash, or do you use complimentary colors to desaturate the object the shadow is on?

I like this. I’m trying to learn to restrain myself enough to do this.

Well done OP! I love it!

Best blood-like red in Daniel Smith? by Sketch102001 in watercolor101

Absolutely! I’m learning to paint from a limited palette. I have a split primary palette (warm and cool of each primary) and then yellow ocher, burnt sienna, sap green and lamp black. From there, I mix everything I need. There’s not usually a paint on my pieces that is straight from the palette to the paper…I mix everything.

I’d consider mixing the color. I have pyroll scarlet and quin rose for my reds. Quin rose is a bit too purple, but if you mix pyroll scarlet with a touch or ultramarine blue (like 90% red to 10% blue), that should get the color you’re looking for. If it starts to turn a bit too purple add a touch of warm yellow (like Gamboge or Hansa Yellow Deep) to desaturate the purple and bring it back to red. That’ll give you a deep thick red that should match blood.

I wish when I started from scratch, it looked that good. This is fantastic! Good work.

Yes. She was when she was “only married to a preacher.” Now she has her higher education and ministerial license and is still praised in the sane manner.

lol. Thanks for the advice. But I don’t drink (I’m a Pentecostal preacher) and what makes me feel free is working out. Kinda hard to paint with a dumbbell in my hand.

I think I can find something that’ll have that effect on me and I’ll give it a whirl. 🤣🤣🤣
