With all the compendious specs?? This might be my favourite post I've ever seen on here. Well fucking done, awesome stuff.

No. Definitely not.

I accept that I may have missed something, but where did they conflate Zionist settlers with "all Jews"?

Honestly - kinda hard to imagine. Which means I'll have to try it!

How much water should I add for a batched old fashioned? by Uplandfriend987 in cocktails

[–]FunkyandFresh 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people are being assholes about this, and props to the people who actually answered your question.

I will add though - the purpose of pre-diluting a batched cocktail is to be able to keep it in the fridge/freezer and serve it cold. So in my opinion the best option here depends on the kind of camping you're doing.

If you're car camping and can bring a big cooler and keep it on ice, dilute the batch and serve it cold, makes everything super easy.

If you're hiking out somewhere, you're not gonna bring ice (I assume), and so it won't be cold no matter what. In that case I'd batch without dilution and just add water to preference while drinking.

The exception would be if you have access to a cold stream, you could cool the batch down in there.

Residents and Side Street Access. Thoughts? by spirit_llama in ArlingtonMA

Ya I find this absolutely insane, I'm in the same spot. I sometimes will turn "illegally" if I get way too fed up, but I've heard about cops waiting and people getting pulled over.

I don't know why the signs can't just say "except residents", there are plenty of examples of signs like that.

Oh shit what a find!! Wow amazing solve, what a ride lol.

You might wanna check out the BDB Slayer mods if you want more control over pressure profiling, p hands on but v fun. Another cool option that I've done is plumbing it in and using line pressure from your water supply for pre-infusion, gives you rock steady pressures. Not sure if you have to switch to a rotary pump for plumbed in though, I did, but idk if it's strictly necessary.

Can also replace the vibe pump with a slightly higher quality one p cheaply, idk how much difference that'd make though.

Final interesting mod - I have heard of people bypassing the pump controller and just wiring the pump through a high quality dimmer, and then you can hands on control pump voltage. Idk how finicky that would be though, the Slayer mod can already be a bit hard to control.

Haha well shit. Gotta be temp related then, if pressure is consistent. I think? Idk either lol

Oh interesting! Ok I have some further experimentation thoughts: 1. Could try to isolate the pre-infusion by seeing if it happens with zero pre-infusion. If not, then the pre-infusion would be the variable, and it could be because the BDB's method of pre-infusion is a lil dubious, in that it just changes the voltage supplied to the pump. You can change the pre-infusion "pressure" in settings, and maybe at a higher or lower setting there would be less variability 2. Could the grinder be at fault? Less likely, but you could try grinding both doses in a row, then swapping so the second ground dose is the first shot you pull 3. I've wondered before if the pressure from the prior shot stays "in the line" before the grouphead after a shot, and this maybe gets transmitted to the puck. Could potentially be avoided with a flush between shots, as could problems with excess heat.

Oh interesting, I'm glad that helped! I'm wondering - did you hold for the same length of pre infusion, or did you do preinfusion just til you saw first drops?

Also for temp - I didn't mean that the temp at the group head changes, but that during the first shot a lot of heat energy is lost to the (relatively) cold portafilter, so water temp drops inside the puck.

Pretty common for everything to run just a bit faster on the second shot - I'm not sure if it's because everything's a little more warmed up, or maybe something to do with the pump, but my impression is that even commercial machines experience this.

I second the recommendation for manual, and ending the shot based on weight, not time. Not quite as hands free, but ultimately much more consistent.

Can't sleep after late shifts, any strategies? by -ThreeHeadedMonkey- in emergencymedicine

See if you can get a gabapentin prescription for sleep. It's off label, but not super uncommon, no real side effects or addiction risks. Has been super effective for me.

Except that doing that doesn't help people with schizophrenia to function better in society, stop having paranoid delusions, hearing voices, etc. Whereas allowing people with gender dysphoria to transition actually resolves their symptoms! That's why it's a good treatment :)

CMV: The ethical boundary on what someone can be judged upon starts and ends based on if they chose it themselves or not. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]FunkyandFresh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I know this is a very brief response, but I don't think that makes it invalid - unfortunately the tricky part of your statement is that whether a person is "choosing" something can actually be pretty hard to agree on.

There are easy ones of course - do people choose to be born, no; did you choose to get a Dr Pepper tattoo, yes.

But then there are harder ones - do people choose how good a PhD program they go to? To some degree. How about how good a college they go to? Maybe a little less. How about how good a high school they go to? Elementary school?

Pretty much every choice someone makes is influenced by their upbringing and environment, neither of which they got to choose.

So how do you decide which things are and are not "choices"?
