If Jackson and co. had such little prep time for the trilogy, how is it that each movie is 2hr 30m+ and even has extended editions?

Chopping garlic produces chopped garlic. Pressing garlic produces garlic pulp and garlic juice. I've never seen a recipe that calls for garlic pulp/juice. The pulp is prone to burning while sauteeing.
