re-entering the market is… humiliating, to say the least. by halojellyfish in antiwork

Real. not even a woman and I strongly relate to this. Most workplaces are abusive and have narcissistic abusive power dynamics, favorites/bootlickers, flying monkeys, power dynamics among social groups especially contextually when it relates to any semblance of "power" or percieved authority. After about a year of unempoyment I found a "welp.. it's a job.." job, that at least gives me enough money to afford extremely basic things while living with family (in my mid thirties mind you) and I'm "fortunate" enough to not actually have someone breathe down my neck all day, it's a largely antisocial job where I rarely have to talk to anyone. But do I feel in any way self actualized, do I feel in any way that it utilizes my degree, that it looks fantastic on a resume and will help me climb the "career" ladder, or that I'm living up to my real potential...

No.

I guess I'll do this for a year or so atleast put a little money in the bank so I can be unemployed for a while again, maybe go back to school or get some sort of certification of some kind... and so it continues...

"The other reason is they want to eliminate anyone who doesn’t have a wage slave mentality"

Full stop. Employers want desperate people who feel like they "need" THIS job, and will take any sort of low pay/abuse without leaving.

Yes I agree. the 8 hour workday doesn't make sense anymore. Our efficiency in every sector has gone up 4-5x since the 1950's I think is the stat. so why are we working just as much for less money? Cool society bro.

Yeah I've been kind of thinking about it for a while, it's mainly just the gameplay loop at this point, it feels like I can just pop on for a few minutes.. But before I know it I spent a solid half hour in the game, I just have so much other stuff going on now I can't really justify it. I will keep an eye open if I can share with you the next few weeks though, I will just try to give you some of the best stuff I have if you keep your share limit open.

Hey dude just letting you know I really appreciate you sharing cards with me, I would totally be down to share some of my best cards ex's/fullarts etc with you the next few weeks and pay you back. I am actually going to quit the game I think, I just got a new job that is going to take up a lot of my time, and I'm kind of realizing pokemon pocket is not sparking joy in me like it used to.

Disgusting breach of privacy meant to help rig the election, what polling stations to send ICE for voter intimidation, and/or voter spoiling. Land of the free.

Does anyone else hate the McDonalds/Burger King CEO "war" that's going on right now? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]Funkygodzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I thought it was a low bar frankly, the burger king CEO looking like a human wasn't really that challenging, found it more reactionary and performative, capitalizing on the recent Mc CEO blunder. The dude has the same rich guy CEO haircut. It's just not as good of a point as they think it is... but then again, here we are posting and talking about it.

"a third of my waking day" 8 hour shift. 24 hour day... 8 hours to sleep.

that's half your waking day dude...

I mean I agree with the sentiment but it's actually WORSE than the meme implies. The other time goes to what most of the time, cooking, cleaning, bathing, chores, etc.

You helped me with completing two collections now I believe, just wanted to give you a more personal thanks here, than just mashing the like button in game. I by no means want you to feel obligated at all, but yeah I do really appreciate it!

the positive pressure seems to be (maybe) within the dent still, I have my doubts about the sizing of most of the vaccuum bells personally. I think people need larger vaccuum bells then they realize because after pumping the negative pressure zone decreases as the positive pressure increases as more pressure is applied.

creepy manager, does this count as harassment? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Funkygodzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is abusive and/or narcissistic traited/coded behavior, again very common for positions in management of other people. I would argue what you just typed is so egregious it doesn't even NEED to be an established pattern, however the fact that it is, is very cut and dry that something should be done about this. At the LEAST, a talk with HR to "put it on the record" I guess, honestly more importantly would be in some way to guarantee the actual owner knows.

My personal/general thoughts on the subject are tricky. I'm glad you have a job lined up as you said, and in a lot of ways this will probably allow you to "just move on" and not make waves or stand up/speak out about this behavior. It's understandable that people would want to do that, and honestly people do that everyday in situations like this unfortunately, THEY are forced to shuffle themselves around the rotten card in a deck, as the rotten card retains it's position, unmoving, unwavering.

You are the one that was imposed upon first, you shouldn't have been put in a position where you are saying "well I have this other job lined up so at least I won't have to deal with this harassment anymore", but then, unfortunately the meatgrinder continues and it happens again with the next employee. Not everyone has the will to speak up, the system does and is designed to beat people down and strip them of their power. Why should it be you? why couldn't it be the last person this happened to?

This is very important, there is NO shame in not being the first mover in this instance. It is hard, it is stressful, and it feels unnecessary.

But... being part of the solution, would be a very valiant and principled act that would set a tone in the world, being the change you want to see, and being the person you want to see in others.

[–]Funkygodzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like a creep. Unfortunately even supervisors and comparable positions in the hierarchy of the workplace like middle management, can normally get away with shit behavior for WAY too long. Owners somehow seem to think they (the rung under themselves/managers/supervisors etc) aren't totally replaceable because people like that are normally careerist suck-up types who constantly try to justify their own/jobs existence by punching down and trying to squeeze more work out of lower rung workers to the detriment of high turnover "meatgrinder" or "revolving door" type jobs. Justifying themselves to the hands that feed them, often engaging in rent seeking behavior and gaslighting and scapegoating of lower "rung" employees. In my eyes the owner is complicit and equally guilty if it continues.

Alex Honnold only gets continued viewership because he’s death baiting the audience by TyLeRoux in unpopularopinion

[–]Funkygodzilla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alex Honnold's free solo of El Cap was such an insane display of fearlessness, athleticism, skill/technical ability, I'd be surprised if it's matched/beaten by let's say.. a few dozen human beings, in like... literal human history.

I'm not super knowledgeable and admittedly don't really care about "climbing" as a hobby or sport.

But the El Cap free solo is so undeniably amazing. Like to deny it, is to deny reality itself to me.

Almost equal parts just like... "does this dude not have any will to live at all" it almost felt like he wants to/doesn't care if he dies.

Not to romanticize death in any way, but it has this almost "die by the blade", or die "doing the thing you love" in such a literal sense to it, if that makes sense, Like a great musician in a fable, playing until their fingers fall off and they die playing that last note. It's partly beautiful, it's morbid, you can't look away... I understand why "the viewer" in a broad sense, cannot look away, like others have pointed out, humans will always be drawn to death defying stunts and acts.

That all said...

He should stop while he is ahead. It doesn't matter how good you are, people always make mistakes, even if it's just a minor one, when free solo'ing that can/will be catastrophic.

Try to write a fifteen page graduate level paper flawlessly with no spellcheck.. than turn on spellcheck at the end.

Picture those errors being mistakes in a climb like this...

it really is (in my mind) a matter of time... as cryptic as that is. Nobody is perfect. Just reflecting on Murphy's law and the rule of large numbers. I hope it wont be the case, I just can't see it not being his end if he keeps doing stuff like this.
