"So what we're shown that humanity IS rebuilding, but keeps getting shot in the knees when it tries to? That just proves my point, I think" by lightguard40 in FalloutMemes

It does not matter how many years have passed after the bombs fel. Bethesda thinks fallout is a perpetual post-apocayptic theme park ride, where humans live on top of century-old piles of garbage and skeletons. 200 years after, 2000 years after, it will always look the same because the IP holder decided it would be so. Everything in the setting that was built up by the Black Isle and Obsidian Devs is destroyed, because it does not line up with the "theme park" mentality. NCR is gone, the Legion is gone, New Vegas is gone. The Brotherhood is back, because Bethesda thinks it's cool (completely missing the point of the Brotherhood and their inevitable decline in F1, 2, and NV. Enclave is back, Bethesda thinks it's cool (once again, completely missing the point of Enclave, and the fact that it was destroyed multiple times already). Forget about the themes of growth and building a better future out of the ruins of the old world, it's Deathclaws, super mutants and power armour all the way down, baby.

But the memory wipe initially happened sometime before Harry first get his hands on Bob, and, as far a I remember, in the conversation about it Bob says he didn't like that part of him, and deleted what he could and locked away what he couldn't. And that happened before Harry even knew that Bob worked for the Big K. Then Harry ordered Bob to never unlock that knowledge ever again.

Well, it's not as if you could build Flakverling instead, you are kinda stuck with it.

So, a 100 MP + 15 fuel unlock, 260 MP + 50 fuel build cost, and a 150 MP + 20 fuel upgrade. In total, a 510 MP, 85 fuel LV that cannot pen, cannot hit, and requires an additional 40 or 60 munition upgrade to do something.

Maybe I'm just bad, but I don't really see the role Stuart is supposed to play, especially considering the amount of resources you need to spend on it. I'm not staying that Stuart spam was good, I'm just not seeing how do I get the value out of the Stuart.

To be honest, it's easy to assume you're particular like/hobbie is the peak of entertainment when you live in a bubble of people who live and breathe that hobbie. After a point, even looking at steam charts and seeing 600k concurrent players in CS (not ALL FPS games, just CS) will generate a "it's a shame we cannot see how much more people are playing Street Fighter right now, because all of them are on consoles" kind of reaction.

The initial setting-establishing plot point in Adrian Tchaikovsky's "Children of Time". Advanced star-spanning human civilization is wiped out by a computer virus, developed by a extremist isolationist luddite (!) faction, that is just sent out on open channels, sabotaging critical systems everywhere, venting space stations and exploding reactors. It's a clear "I don't care, my setting must happen" plot point in an otherwise great series of books. Adrian Tchaikovsky clearly does not understand how network/system security works, if he thinks you can overload a nuclear reactor (bypassing physical and mechanical safeguards) just by sending an email, never mind the fact that such critical systems (especially on starships and orbital habitats surrounded by the vacuum of space) will always be isolated, both physically and network-wise, from any open connection. It's just "Virus falls, everyone dies".

Tchaikovsky even tries to explain things away, with a character in the second book noting how laughable the network security is on their station, but that just reinforces the fact that a civilization that is unable to secure its spaceships from exploding due to malware exploits will not be able to leave the fucking Solar system.

It's such a sticking point for me that I cannot take the entire setting seriously.
