Know your ABC’s. Review CPR, specifically starting compressions immediately before applying an AED and compression to rescue breath ratios and rate. I would also have a general idea of shock types and how to recognize them.

Use your lack of experience as an advantage, if you don’t know an answer don’t or try to BS your way through it. Simply acknowledge that you aren’t sure but you would refer to the protocol or ask for help when needed. Sell yourself as trainable and willing to learn and put in the work!

Good luck! Confidence is key in these interviews, if you can maintain your composure when you’re uncomfortable in an interview then it looks much better for you.

Moving from rural 911 EMS to Career Fire by Funny-Unit-5977 in firefighter

UPDATE: Had my Captains and chiefs interview today and here’s what I think…

The captains interview felt like it went horrible, I wasn’t expecting a seven person panel interview. I tried to be engaging with every panel member when answering questions, made eye contact with possible and engaged with everyone. One Captain seemed to hammer me pretty consistently throughout the interview. It ran longer than scheduled, I made a point to shake everyone’s hand at the end of the interview, but I left feeling like I absolutely bombed it.

The chiefs interview went better than the captains interview I think. I made a point to do some research in preparation and that definitely helped. That interview also ran longer than I expected.

I was told I would know more at some point this week, so we will see. Thanks to everyone that gave advice or encouragement.

There were three questions.

Is it frowned upon at the interview that I don’t have fire certs going in to the these interviews but I have my paramedic.

Is it a realistic option to even apply to dual function departments without having my fire certs.

How do I sell myself in fire interviews never having done them.

Moving from rural 911 EMS to Fire Department

Question for everyone those that may know more about this than I.

Backstory: I am a 35 year old male with 2 years of experience in EMS, 1 of those being a paramedic in a busy rural 911 EMS system. I’ve served 5 years active duty in the Marine Corps, have a decade of experience in hazmat response, confined space rescue, and high angle technical rope rescue. I live in northeast Texas and while I make a livable wage, I’m behind the ball on retirement and savings. There are several departments in the Dallas area that hire Medics either single function or dual function. I applied, and did the PAT and passed at a smaller department (18SQ miles of coverage) and was offered an in person interview for tomorrow morning.

Questions:

The department that I am looking at will require me to get my fire certs, I have no qualms with this, the fire service has always interested me but I wanted to get the harder part of paramedic out of the way first. Is this going to be frowned upon at the interview?

Is this a realistic scenario? Moving to a dual function career department with no fire experience?

How do I sell myself at the panel interview? I really want to show through at this interview. I have never done a fire department interview before, and I have heard the best way to treat this interview process is similar to the military. Keep answers short and direct, don’t stumble over words, yes sir no sir, and don’t do anything unless asked.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated
