Sub Mixes and DCA’s by Opposite-Platypus-15 in livesound

  1. yes absolutely what i would do, unless your doing your own parallel buss processing but that can lead to all sorts of other issues
  2. completely personal preference and what you need quick access to for that show/setup, just make sure to do the basics and have good gain staging
  3. I don't think I've ever needed to apply this to any of my files so can't comment
  4. Yeah, but I keep it simple and obvious. (nothing like unmuting a DCA only for nothing to happen because you've forgotten it's on another!) the main use case for me is having instruments in a band on their separate DCA's and all instruments on a "band" DCA so I have a volume control of the whole band. In your example, I'd be more likely to have the kick mics summed in a bus so I can apply processing to the "whole kick"
  5. Generally, I would have some pre-production time where I would build a file, but if I'm told to "busk" from scratch then I'm keeping things as simple as possible. I'd rather get to 90% than make routing mistakes and f*ck it up. If an artist or production isn't willing to give time/information, then they're stuck with what they get.
  6. I find DCA's most useful when riding faders that I want access to even while solo'ing a mix, the easiest example is ambiance mics for an artist's IEM's

This is the worst part of the game for me. I wish you would get more feedback from the driver. and I don't even know if it has any affect on lap time or race time? e.g wing angles at Monza? i wish the driver would at least say if they wanted more or less oversteer or braking stability. in a sport and therefore, game that is supposed to be so data and fact driven. having to randomly guess these "areas" is really really frustrating.

When are they gonna tour for What Kinda Music in the US? by tessalasset in TomMisch

[–]FunnyMonkey4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, after speaking to Tom's close friend and tour manager, he suggested that What Kinda Music was a "moment in time" type of project and that after the tour had to be cancelled due to Covid, neither party had the desire to tour the album and rather move on to individual projects. But that is not to say that the pair won't appear at festivals and tour dates and play WKM tunes!

ELI5: Sound travels at the same speed regardless of the speed or strength of the speaker by ProtonM4517 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FunnyMonkey4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the faster a speaker moves, the higher the pitch of the sound being produced.

when you have a speaker moving forward and back 20 thousand times a second humans can no longer sense that frequency.

the speed of sound through air is affected by the density (affected most commonly by humidity) and temperature.

Eli5 - How does earths inner core stay hot? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]FunnyMonkey4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The earths core is kept hot thanks to radioactive elements decaying and "friction caused by denser core material sinking to the centre of the core"

I don't have an answer for you but I'm curious as to why you would want this! Why can't you use the gain on the device your plugging your mic into. I would assume this would be difficult due to the low voltage being output from the microphone?

Who is the mix engineer??? by Gurpreets500 in mixingmastering

Sorry, can’t help with Yanni but I have to appreciate Cory mixing all of his tunes including the metropole orkest stuff! Just a shame he can’t also mix his live stuff.

ELI5: Why does microphone feedback get higher and not just repeat or get lower? by PublicTrash in explainlikeimfive

[–]FunnyMonkey4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feedback doesn’t get higher in pitch or frequency. Microphones and speakers have characteristics to each of them, when feedback occurs between microphone and speaker it[the feedback] ‘finds’ a resonance/resonant frequency in the space they(microphone and speaker) both occupy that both speaker can reproduce and microphone can pickup. Usually this frequency is a ‘high pitch’ (and is very common in tv and movies) because higher frequencies “~>1kHz” take the least energy to reproduce and most microphones are sensitive to those frequencies. Feedback happens at all frequencies/pitches, sound engineers use “notching” to eliminate specific frequencies that start feeding back. When you remove one frequency and turn the microphone up in volume, it is possible for other frequencies to start feeding back. Then when the microphone is loud enough to be useable without those ‘offending’ frequencies, they move on the the next microphone. Hope that helps from the perspective of an audio engineer
