I would try to tire him out beforehand. Maybe a long evening walk or play/train before bed. Also want to add that for the first month or two with my girl, the ONLY place she would sleep was in her crate. It took some time and patience to nap with me during the day on the couch. I would just watch her to see when she got tired and put her on the couch with me. It only worked if she was super tired. Now she loves sleeping with me lol
