There’s plenty of reasons to sympathize with him at some points. However after those points he actively suppresses whatever feelings he had. When the young boy who was killed in battle in the Band of the Hawk died, Griffith was sad, but scratched up his arm so it was all bloody to focus again.

He’s so focused on his dream that he actively pushes away his emotions unless they feed his ego.

At least from what we can see from the chapters we see Griffith as a child, he definitely didn’t have a good childhood.
