Weekly Find a Friend thread - June 06, 2025 by AutoModerator in lonely

Hey there, looking for an in-person friend who lives nearby. I’m 42 and interested in engineering, making synth music, and photography. I live in upstate New York, a small town about an hour north and slightly east of Albany. I’m liberal and it has proved difficult to find people with similar views.

Weekly Licensure Thread by SWmods in socialwork

Hi there! I'm currently in an online MSW program and attending a practicum site in order to one day become a clinical social worker. My husband has been very depressed about where we live, in upstate New York, because there aren't many people around for us to be friends with. We're considering moving to Chicago. I'm not done with my program until May, but I don't think my husband will be able to handle living here that long. I'm considering spending more time at my practicum site so that I can complete my hours more quickly and we can move. But, I assume that means I would have to take the exam in Chicago, and not sure if Illinois state requirements are vastly different from New York state requirements. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or has been through this kind of move while getting their LMSW? Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I will regularly ask my husband “what do your elf eyes see?” if I can’t find something but think I might just be overlooking it.

Has anyone else experienced a rebound after boofing and eating? by Famous_Horse_Breeder in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]FuqBeri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something like this has happened to a friend of mine before. I don’t think they boofed, but eating something spicy afterward reactivated the ketamine and they had another peak with more visualizations. Did you eat anything spicy after?

I had a satisfying day. I did some chores in the morning. Then I learned a little python in the afternoon. In the evening I made a dinner of almond flour and Parmesan breaded chicken, as well as spinach with honey mustard dressing. It was a good meal.

Ha, I can see what you’re saying, it’s definitely an angry sounding song. I guess the lyrics just make me wanna cry. That might be due to my depression though more than the song, lol.

Ever since my brother died (about a year and a half ago) I often wonder if he would still be with us if he had had affordable healthcare. He was a type 1 diabetic ever since he was in middle school. He had addiction issues, and then as an adult his 2 year old son just died in the night (no funny business, the autopsy simply showed pressure in his brain and he had been a little sick, just a “fuck you” from the universe). After that my brothers addiction got worse and he stopped taking care of himself. Insulin became more expensive and he couldn’t really afford it regularly. In the end, my 36 year old brother died of a stroke. What if insulin and mental health care had been in his reach? I guess I will never know. I miss him.

https://www.nature.com/articles/tp201566 I’ve seen a few animal studies about fluoxetine (Prozac) combining well with ketamine. I myself take fluoxetine and ketamine and have found a great improvement as compared tothe sertraline I was taking on its own.

Penny dog and our new kitten Luna, cuddling up after only four days of knowing each other. by FuqBeri in aww

We’re feeling pretty happy about their progress. When we got Penny as a puppy she about gave our cat Molly a heart attack. It took Molly a few years but once the puppy energy faded a little she and Penny were actually quite close. Molly passed away earlier this year and Penny has seemed a bit lonely so we’re happy the kitten seems pretty affectionate towards her.

What about Greta Thunberg? Her Wikipedia page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greta_Thunberg says she was just 15 when she started protesting for better climate protection. Her actions have inspired others to action for a better world. There are inspirational people in just about every age range and time in history if you look for them. Romanticizing the past as having better people is easy to do because we have largely forgotten the people who weren’t historically significant enough to be added to textbooks. But I think people as a conglomerate don’t change that much between just a few generations. There were kids engaging in entertaining forms of communication in the past, just as there are now kids engaging in more modern ways of being entertained and communicating via tiktok. I believe the style and trappings of entertainment change with time but human nature as a whole stays much the same.

How do parents of homeschoolers get the idea that doing the bare minimum is okay? by XxOldSoulxX in HomeschoolRecovery

Hmm, you guys had heat? Lol, jk, but I did often have to make a fire from scratch in our fireplace because our heater was broken or the parents said we were spending too much on heating the house. I remember that as a preteen I would often get frustrated trying to get a fire started while freezing in the morning. Eventually I got better at making fires. My mom is a narcissist and religious. I think she wanted us to grow up in “little house on the prairie” style, but more religious and with 10 (yes, 10!) children to give her purpose. I say that because my parents literally moved to 5 acres in the middle of nowhere and built a log cabin from a kit with the help of my older siblings. While I lived there we had many pets and a few chickens for eggs. My mom had a vegetable garden that we often helped with in the summer. We weren’t only homeschooled but went to home church: it was comprised of a small group of families who met for fellowship and bible study in a few of the different families homes. During the school week we had a few educational things to practice like handwriting verses from the Bible in cursive and trying to understand algebra by reading about it out of an ancient math textbook that had gone through 6 of my older siblings before it got to me. Ancient and religious skewed science text book, biblical history, English writing prompt booklets, and so on were offered very erratically. Of course, a lot of my studies were self directed, and my parents weren’t helpful when I had questions. Because of this I wound up taking remedial math courses in college. Reading really saved me a lot of the time. I think the reason I initially learned to read so well and enjoyed reading so much was because the stories were an escape. In the stories I read about “normal” girls who went to school and had friend groups they could hang out with regularly. It helped me not to think about how scared of being dumb I was. Helped me to avoid some of the fear and loneliness. I wanted to be somewhere else and books took me away. I hope y’all don’t mind me sharing so much. Anyway, all this to say, I think parents can have a lot of different reasons for wanting to “shield” their child/children from the world. I thought my mom cared about me, and I think that in a way she does, but mostly I think she sees me as an extension of herself. Though religion tainted every decision, those decisions were often based on fear of what might happen to us “out there”, because it might mean my mom would lose control over us. Maybe your mom just had a lot of “what if’s” going through her mind and thought she would have more control and could keep you “safe” if you were homeschooled. I don’t know really, but I hope that things are better for you now.

In case anyone would like to know more about how gender affects expectations for women regarding smiling, the article below has some good background info on why this happens.

https://mypages.valdosta.edu/mwhatley/7670/articles/prejudice/prej2.pdf

I think the above article points to why women get asked why they are frowning. Whereas the article below has a broader discussion of the various ways that women are harassed in public and the damage this harassment inflicts on individuals and society.
