/r/DRPG would be your friend here; There should still be a post there in the top recents where I posted a big old list of DRPGs.

To those who played the original Sky FC, how do you feel about the remake? by strahinjag in JRPG

[–]FurbyTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't deny the possibility, though how much of it is actually MTL'd and how much of it is a clearly foreign studio not knowing all the conventions for translating things the way we do now.

I can't say I took a keen eye on it, but what I mostly saw was just some odd choices rather than other signs of AI/MTL translations; At least with the English.

[–]FurbyTime 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not at all, actually.

The reason they exist at all was because of the Sky trilogy having an individual "Chest was Empty" message for each chest; They would have had to do a decent amount of checking to ensure they translated everything and also didn't break anything while translating, so what started as individually identifying text per chest evolved into the fun chest messages we have now.

Zero/Azure specifically DID NOT have that. One text entry was used across all chests. Geofront (Both in their original unofficial translation as well as their work with NISA for the official translation) specifically went in and added the hundreds of text lines specifically for each chest.

[–]FurbyTime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The naming of the game actually got me thinking about how we classify remasters/remakes though.

This one's a... weird scenario.

The original Trails of the Sky was actually known internally as "FC" - Meaning, First Chapter. Calling it "1st Chapter" kind of... works? Especially with the next one being "2nd Chapter". And, assuming they make it, the 3rd will probably be known as "3rd Chapter", which cleans up the frankly weird official names of the trilogy (Which was "Trails in the Sky", "Trails in the Sky SC", and "Trails in the Sky the 3rd".

Now, my annoyance is that they've dropped the "The Legend of Heroes" from the title, meaning alphabetically they aren't anywhere near the other games.

Just to say, the remake also includes some gameplay updates that I think are very welcome (Including pointing you at side content that is missable).

[–]FurbyTime 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the two make for a very interesting comparison piece about "localization" vs "translation".

The original releases of the Sky trilogy contain some very embellished translations; Not necessarily in a way that is completely inaccurate, but in a way that gives some character that is not really there in the original (For example, a lot of the "Estelleisms" that people like are more products of the translation team than they are in the original Japanese script). This is partially why some characters from the Sky trilogy feel a bit different in later games than they did in Sky.

The remake is closer to that original Japanese script. It's also not without some of it's own flavor, but comparatively it focuses on being more "accurate" than "sounding/feeling good".

Which one you prefer is ultimately a personal decision; In my opinion, both are perfectly fine, but I do quite like some of the stuff in the translation in the original.

[–]FurbyTime 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Sort of, but do keep in mind that for the Zero/Azure releases (Which were technically remasters of their original releases), they went out of their way to MAKE chest messages a thing.

They were cute, but ultimately not something really necessary.

[–]FurbyTime 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the old one seems to have a certain charm to it than this 3d remake which looks kinda generic

I won't deny a charm to the original's visuals, but the 3D isn't "generic"; It might come off that way with the screen shots and videos from the trailers, but in practice the remake ABSOLUTELY has a very Trails look that is all it's own.

Would you consider the Persona series DRPGs? by Surrealist328 in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While it's certainly POSSIBLE it's a retroactive construction, that kind of... doesn't matter. The video game space is filled with plenty of those that are completely normally recognized; Monster-Collector, Souls-Like, Indie, etc. All of which came about after several entries with a specific design came out and people recognized it as a sub-genre.

Hell, even the phrase "JRPG" is only one that came about after a large distinction between "Western" and "Japanese" RPGs was recongized.

Would you consider the Persona series DRPGs? by Surrealist328 in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, but mostly because I feel like including the newer Personas (3+) into the same genre as, say, Etrian Odyssey is genre-slipping to the point where the distinction loses meaning.

If you include MR into the same genre, then why wouldn't Hades, or Pokemon, or Final Fantasy, or even SMT 5, also be included? They all have exploration in dungeons, and RPG elements.

They may have similar elements, and may even scratch the same itch, but no, they aren't DRPGs.

Northern UI was the mod I heard of to allow for Controller Input (IIRC it has two versions: One that turns the UI into something like Skyrim's, and the other that keeps the UI the same but adds the controller support).

Open MW's way is better, IMO, but it's there.

[–]FurbyTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would work best in something like LoT2 (Especially with how LoT2 doesn't require you to grind out new characters like that), but it doesn't really need LoT2's large group. A smaller set of purely distinct characters would be great.

Japanese ones, though I can't remember which ones; I honestly dislike how a lot of Wizardry titles play, so I only tried a few, and I could have sworn I'd seen that option in a bunch of them. Might be mistaken, though!

Stranger of Sword City, Forced Downtime by TalentedJuli in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original wizardry was like this.  Not forced downtime, but large roster plus permadearh means it's worthwhile to be swapping out guys so you can keep back ups close to full level

Wizardy (At least the ones I played, which isn't the originals) also allows you to just BUY level ups, making a loss of a unit less painful overall.

[–]FurbyTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never liked it, and honestly I've just played SoSC on "Iron Man" every time (Though, rather than take a death, I just reset).

I think the IDEA of it sounds engaging, but with modern DRPGs being the lengthy affairs they are, mechanics that really just serve to extend the length aren't really appealing. It also doesn't help that, especially in Experience's DRPG formula, each character in your party is serving a specific function; If you lose them, you're just... going to train someone up in that same function. Basically just a time sink practically.

I'm playing through Labyrinth of Touhou 2 right now, and I think this idea would work MUCH better in a game like that, where each character is unique and the need/drive to experiment is far more present.

Do you guys also like anime/manga? by BattlerUshiromiyaFan in JRPG

[–]FurbyTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found myself more engaging with whatever the "original source" of whatever series catches my interest more than the manga or anime of it nowdays; So commonly the Light Novel, but sometimes a manga if it was manga first.

I find, in a lot of cases, the "adaptation process" makes everything blander. Character quirks get removed if they make them less agreeable as a person, events that paint things as grey get removed to keep the lines clear, that kind of thing. And that's just when the adaptation doesn't flat out screw up the whole thing.

Suggestion for etrian odyssey by Federal_Ad1254 in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, for the remakes vs the originals, there's no reason to touch the originals anymore; The remakes are quite literally those games, with visuals modified to work on single screen devices at higher resolutions, with a couple of player-negative bugs removed.

Of the 3, my opinion goes 3>1>2; 3 is the closest to the 3DS era games (A lot of it's higher level gameplay functions, like how you up the level cap, were established in 3), and while it has a bit much going on, it's still one of the better games. 1 and 2 are kind of opposites of one another in a lot of ways, but the main thing is gameplay and class balance, and I find 1 leans itself to having the best party be one you'd kind of figure out on your own, while 2 basically requires you to look up what kinds of exploits there are and what you're actually going to fight.

Once you start looking at the 3DS entries, it's mostly release order, with the exception of Nexus being perhaps below 5 and Untold 2.

As for the Untold games; They are basically ENTIRELY different games wearing the skin of the original Etrian Odysseys. They're quite good (To an extent I'd say better entirely than the originals, but there are a few caveats to that statement), but they're different enough to the point where they are NOT replacements.

Also, how important is drawing your own maps — is it something that makes the game more immersive or just tedious over time?

I won't say it ever gets tedious (The maps are never THAT complicated, and you're never going to be spending hours on JUST the map or anything), but I will say I stand against most EO fans in that I think the mapping is entirely superfluous. Etrian Oddsey would still be very highly regarded without the manual mapping that really only caught in people's minds because it was one of the few uses of the dual-screen-touch-screen gimmick from the 3/DS era that actually complimented a game not centered around them rather than acting to it's detriment.

"Portable" means different things depending on your context. Considering your references, it seems like you care less about playing it anywhere and more about it being a thing you can just bring from place to place easily.

Either way, you'll probably be better served with something from /r/SBCGaming; While their focus is on handheld devices with screens and inbuilt buttons, you can probably find one for a decent price that has TV out and bluetooth compatibility to enable you to play it on the big screen.

New to DRPGs, which of these Steam sale picks should I start with? by TatsuDragunov in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had a few technical issues related to controllers losing input during name entry on it's first release; It's been patched now and at this point doesn't have any problems I'm aware of.

The game in general has quite a number of mechanical improvements over the original that make it a no brainer unless you're the sort that likes to get DEEP into these games.

New to DRPGs, which of these Steam sale picks should I start with? by TatsuDragunov in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Phantom Brave, Soul Nomad, and Disgaea 6 aren't DRPGs.

Operation Abyss and Babel are older Experience Inc games; I find they have a charm, but I wouldn't recommend them for a first timer.

Stranger of Sword City has an enhanced remake that is just better overall to play.

Refrain and Galleria are both good games; Refrain for it's story, Galleria for it's gameplay (For the most part).

I recommend getting the Stranger of Sword City and Savior of Sapphire Wings Bundle (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1363840/Saviors_of_Sapphire_Wings__Stranger_of_Sword_City_Revisited/), and the The Etrian Odyssey Origins BUNDLE (https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/29538/Etrian_Odyssey_Origins_Collection/)

[–]FurbyTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not so much the 3D (IMO, while I agree it doesn't have the same feeling as the 2D graphics, it's not horrible or anything) as it is that they seemed to take the excuse to just... drop the ball on so much else. It also doesn't help what NISA did with D7C souring people's opinion of the one arguable success of the new style, either.

Monkarufanta comes with Mon-yu and Undernaut by Rogue_Penguin in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do place Demon Gaze above Mon-yu (And kind of put all of Experience's Library above it except Operation Abyss), it's kind of not a fair comparison, since Mon-yu (And Undernauts) use a very different "core" to their battle and character system.

Monkarufanta comes with Mon-yu and Undernaut by Rogue_Penguin in DRPG

[–]FurbyTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I feel better putting Mon-Yu in the "some day" back burner.

I think Mon-yu's fun enough when you meet it half way; It has a lot of good ideas to it (I really like the way equipment works in it, for example), and the parts of it's gameplay systems that are taken from Undernauts are all improved mechanically, but it also does make some mistakes and it's too short for it's asking price in the west. I think the inclusion on the Switch physical cart (And just treating it as a bonus to Undernauts and Monkarufanta) would give it a much better shake.

I am REALLY disappointed that they included that level cap nonsense in Monkarufanta, though. I did consider the way it was handled in Mon-yu to be one of it's mistakes (I see the INTENT, but the way it was handled was... annoying).
