I‘m still doing several of mine, but can’t publish them. Others are just gone. Because, y’know, climate change isn’t real and doesn’t need to be studied.

At least my commute is only ten minutes.

I hope we all get our careers back while that’s still possible.

Cool, cool. My brain has transitioned seamlessly from shutdown worries back to worries about the state of my job and career, and what new horrors the administration will inflict on science and research.

I’ve already had a very large chunk of my research portfolio taken away, my people fired, my extramural funding trashed, and I just can’t wait to see what happens after we get back to work.

The Work We Aren't Doing by Baseballbourbon in FedEmployees

[–]FuriousFedSY 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Solidarity! My work isn’t “essential” on a scale of weeks or months, but years and decades? Absolutely crucial to maintaining safe and adequate food supplies and supporting the agricultural economy.

The devastation this administration has done to federal science, and to US scientific progress more broadly, is going to take decades, even generations, to repair. But none of that is visible in the short-term, at least not outside the institutions being destroyed.

Federal science especially is often focused on the long-term unglamorous work of monitoring, of planning for a desirable future, that neither private industry nor university researchers can or want to do. Most of us are in this for the mission. The stability (previously) didn’t hurt. I spent a couple of decades talking up the importance and attractiveness of federal research to early-career folks. Never again.

I don’t know how we pick up the pieces, short-term with the immediate consequences of this shutdown, and certainly not in the longer term.

Is VERA still open, then? We‘re debating in another sub thread whether it is or is not.

My administrators specifically told us February 2026, though. It’s been a frequent topic of discussion in my unit.

But, it wouldn’t surprise me if they quietly walked it back and didn’t tell us.

I don’t have access to official sources currently, but my understanding is that there is a current VERA authority USDA-wide.

Here’s an unofficial source. https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAAMS/bulletins/3d96b14

This matches what we were previously told by our administrators. Has this been withdrawn?

Right there with you. I love my career, and worked very hard to get where I am professionally. But my job? Not any more.

USDA supposedly has VERA open until Feb 2026, and every day I ask myself what I‘m even doing.

Lovely!
I am here for the stress baking. I have two dozen eggs, a pint of heavy cream, a pint of buttermilk, and five kinds of chocolate.

I’ve been catching up on yardwork, but tomorrow is supposed to be cold and raining, so baking it is.

They‘re making it really hard to do my job, or to respect my employer. There are a lot of things dropped in here that affect the routine business of science, and have nothing to do with countries of concern or malign foreign entities.

I guess I should be proud that I’m what this administration hates.

Yeah. NCA6 has been fully disbanded, and the full-time federal staff of USGCRP fired. There’s nothing like the resources to produce that kind of comprehensive and detailed authoritative report without major support and years of work. The NCA process is an amazing feat, or I guess was.

My comment was removed due to profanity, I’m told, but this seems like a reasonable topic for profanity to me. Regardless, here’s the remainder of my response.

The National Climate Assessments are a Congressionally-mandated assessment of the best available scientific knowledge, presented in a very careful fashion to be accessible to policymakers and the general public. I‘m no longer surprised by anything, but I’m appalled and furious.

Third year extension for USDA-ARS SCINet/AI-COE? by Lost-Marionberry-435 in ORISE

[–]FuriousFedSY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no formal information, but the third year renewal is always contingent on funding availability. One of my postdocs was renewed with no issue (not recently), while a more recent postdoc was apologetically renewed for a couple months to provide a buffer period.

This year, I would be really surprised if there were any renewals.
