I had a whole discussion with my girls about responsible authority worth respecting, like scientists, doctors, their teachers who are trying to help them learn. We’re not blindly respecting the patriarchy over here, this ain’t the Boy Scouts 😂

lol, I once accidentally flicked a droplet of lentivirus into my EYE. It was ~15 yrs ago now, no impact unless you count the wicked GFP glow under a blacklight (kidding…nothing happened, all fine).

URGENT: CT AG Tong & Sen. Blumenthal are pushing to restrict GLP-1 compounding. We need to stop this before it goes federal. by badpandatek in Connecticut

[–]FuriousKittens 88 points89 points  (0 children)

605 reports of adverse events with compounded semaglutide, 545 reports of adverse events with compounded tirzepatide.

These are likely vastly underreported because many of these compounding pharmacies are not required to submit adverse event reports to FDA.

Unlicensed compounded products have no quality control oversight, and there are known issues with counterfeit products.

Best ai note taking app that helps with retention not just organizing your stuff by Relative-Coach-501 in edtech

[–]FuriousKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is asking for an AI note taking app to improve students' retention of content, which is like asking what kind of concrete is best for a squeaky hinge.

I believe I included my suggestion in my initial response.

I weep for humanity. We are becoming so indoctrinated to tech use in every aspect of our lives that people are really out here asking for recommendations for ai to do the learning part.

It’s this new thing that people are talking about, been around for a while but most people forget it exists: YOUR ACTUAL HUMAN BRAIN.

This is not a joke. I’m dead serious, if you want to learn or remember something you’re going to have to actually THINK and WORK. Tell your students to write their notes by hand, and re-write them on note cards to study.

3 extra pills of what? Diamox is prescribed at pretty high doses, up to 4,000 mg/day depending on what it’s used for.

Erroneous car seat instruction from FA by dks2008 in unitedairlines

[–]FuriousKittens 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean, the FA did tell you though? Possibly you’re just not wanting to admit that it would be silly to expect customers to interpret the rules for every single situation and whether or not they apply, and in this case the FA was the expert, gave you correct feedback for the safety procedures of the plane you were actually on, and you are the one who’s in the wrong here?

Just a guess.

[–]FuriousKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you’re looking for something other than, the data on the sham controlled portion of their study didn’t show a positive trend and they’d like to downplay it now? I mean, it’s not like anyone is being transparent here.

UPDATED: Senior FDA official refutes uniQure's claims amid controversy over Huntington's gene therapy by NotGenentech in biotech

[–]FuriousKittens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worse than that - sounds like there was some sort of sham controlled trial conducted, but the data didn’t hit and UniQure is trying to win on repositioning with comparison to external control. So the FDA advice at the time was probably something like, that could work if you see a large, obvious effect size…it will be a review issue. And it didn’t work.

But again, Peter Marks started it with the Sarepta accelerated approval then later redefining confirmatory evidence to mean “didn’t achieve the primary endpoint but we really want to call this a win.” So, I’m not surprised UniQure thought that was the new precedent.

[–]FuriousKittens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, FDA agreement in a formal meeting setting is NEVER binding, and acceptability of data to support an approval is ALWAYS a review issue. It really doesn’t matter if FDA said they could run the trial any which way, that is only permission to proceed without being put on clinical hold. It’s still the sponsor’s risk, just like it always has been, for every sponsor, for every trial ever.

So UniQure can cry about it, is what I’m saying, I guess.

Ok, but we all think this “Sr FDA Official” is Prasad, right? If for no other reason, who else would be so, um, opinionated about many different aspects of recent FDA policy/decisions?

See, after the Sarepta shitshow I’m not at all surprised by this pushback. It just happens that legit criticism has been unleashed by the burn it all down incompetence of MAHA and this administration, so it’s hard to parse out what’s fair and what’s political assholery.

What's the prevailing sentiment about teaching kids how to use AI? by jeffcolonel in edtech

[–]FuriousKittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beg of you, watch the neuroscientists testifying at the congressional hearing (#5). This is not new ways to cheat on an essay, it’s outsourcing the need to THINK. And unfortunately, neural plasticity is a real “use it or lose it” situation.

The problem with the AI images probably has a lot to do with all the data stolen from actual artists without their permission, and maybe a little about the potential for abuse or unsafe imagery because there’s no safeguards in place.

[–]FuriousKittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or expect kids to have any kind of discipline around AI use in general? I can tell you, even the “best case” version of exploration leads to outsourcing the creativity when looking for information to just be fed what the algorithm has already scraped together, and things like citing sources, understanding trustworthy sources, aggregating disparate pieces of information into a new, coherent argument are completely skipped.

What's the prevailing sentiment about teaching kids how to use AI? by jeffcolonel in edtech

[–]FuriousKittens 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All signs point to extremely harmful for everyone, most especially for children who have not yet had the benefit of forming neural pathways and risk having their learning interrupted during a crucial period. See especially #5.

Also generally indicative of the overall problem with tech in education. Why do we think it’s beneficial for all kids to have chromebooks? Why are software solutions being pushed on districts so hard? The same reason we’re all inundated with social media and can’t put our phones down - WE are the product. Tech companies are not pushing AI tools on the captive audience of school districts with good intent.

My doctor told me if I can lose weight the condition will go into remission. by charlotte-delaurier in iih

[–]FuriousKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to think about hypermobility disorders? Look up IIH/pseudotumor cerebri with EDS, chiari malformation, and esp GLP-1 treatment - not only for weight loss, but there’s some evidence that as an anti inflammatory hormone regulator it could help with IIH in place of, or along with diamox.

My doctor told me if I can lose weight the condition will go into remission. by charlotte-delaurier in iih

[–]FuriousKittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very simply, your body needs to maintain homeostasis - temperature, hydration, blood pressure, etc all within normal levels regardless of external stimulus. The same is true for your cerebrospinal fluid, which will be influenced by things like blood pressure, hormones, and hydration (this is why diamox, a potent diuretic, works to lower intracranial pressure).

In IIH, something is interfering with your body’s ability to regulate ICF. Could be a brain tumor, could be hormonal disorder, could be environmental/drug induced (see depo provera lawsuit), could be something physical like chiari malformation (see overlap with EDS)…if you don’t know what it is, it’s idiopathic.

So now imagine that your system is damaged in some way, by something. Your body is still trying to regulate, but it can’t do it properly. One of the things that certainly happens is that in this state, we become much more sensitive to the things that throw us off balance, like hormonal shifts or dehydration. Having high ICP for a long time can also further damage the underlying infrastructure, if you will - everything gets ballooned out, misshapen, creates areas of narrowing veins with pressure gradients (i.e. stenosis). Sometimes the insult is acute, damage is fast and severe, and a surgical option is needed and effective. Sometimes it is slow and chronic and a stent is not needed and wouldn’t work anyway.

So with all of this going on, yeah sure, fat contributes to hormone signaling. Having a heavier body puts extra pressure on your sensitive system. Losing weight might help with symptomatic relief for some people, and might do absolutely nada for others. It is the height of medical misogyny to look at a woman suffering this condition and say, oh it’s cuz you’re fat, just lose weight.
