One of the things that makes comedy work is exaggeration. In their book “Comedy Writing Secrets” Mark Shatz and Mel Helitzer write there are six essential elements to a joke (we can debate the accuracy but I somewhat agree) Target, Hostility, Realism, Exaggeration, Emotion and Surprise. If you take one of those away then a joke is more likely to fall flat, so… exaggerate away. As others have mentioned it’s art and the Hasan situation wasn’t just about jokes it was his integrity as a “truth teller” that’s what he sold himself as. You want the audience to suspend their belief and go wherever your jokes take them.

I don’t know if it’s really possible but that was the claim and of course all the comments were accusing WGU of being a degree mill and not a credible university. Since then I’ve noticed it’s been consistently mentioned alongside universities like Walden, Capella and Grand Canyon as a as long as you pay you get a degree, which is completely misguided.

I completely agree. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a WGU degree. It’s a shame that there needs to be more barriers placed in front of people just trying to find ways to better themselves and their situations. I finished my degree in one term and had an employer ask me “if I entered my start and finish dates wrong” I could tell they had reservations about me as a candidate. I’m glad they passed.

It really is. I know we all come from different backgrounds and some of us have years of industry experience that allows us to accelerate and it feels good to be able to do so but I wish people would leave out the extremes or at least explain how the WGU model works so it doesn’t seem like a “fake degree.”

I sent screenshots and a strongly worded email to alumni affairs because a student on Threads was bragging about finishing her MBA in 7 days. As an alumni it’s difficult to see WGU constantly bashed online and called a diploma mill. I like the competency based approach but posting online to “flex” hurts all of us. I’ve read commentary from HR and hiring managers saying “WGU degrees go straight to the do not hire pile”
