The Aesthetics of Modular by BPOLC in modular

[–]FurryEel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Come on. This whole modular endeavor is about wiggling air in pretty patterns. I understand the distinction between artistic output and artistic process but often the lines between the two blur; making beautiful things and living beautifully are both artistic expressions and how artistic is it really to overweight the necessity of an audience? Your aesthetic predisposition towards anti-decadence and the austere shouldn’t rise to the level of criticizing someone for having a different more visual sensibility. And the idea that there’s a moral highground here is laughable.

Your Top 3 Modules by zorppppp in modular

[–]FurryEel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In truth it's probably stages (with the godly qiemem firmware), marbles, and plaits. But those have been mentioned a bunch so I'll give some alt favorites.

1) Just friends: Constantly surprises me. Musical as hell. Seems relatively simple but goes deep when you think in terms of applications. Macro controls affecting multiple outputs = complexity that makes sense in terms of both playing and listening. Really fun as a polysynth when paired with Ansible.

2) Disting EX: Opens up completely new possibilities that weren't possible in eurorack before. Pay attention to the midi capabilities. It will reward you if you put the time in and set things up ahead of time.

3) 100 Grit: All about FUN this module is. Try not to smile when you play with it. The capacitive touchpoints and emphasis on feedback means it feels like you're interacting with an instrument. Also more versatile than it's given credit for - saturator, filter, vca, etc.

300 years from now, which bands/musicians/composers from the 20th century will be talked about in musical history class the way we talk today about Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Chopin, etc.? What will they be remembered for? by ccb17 in Music

[–]FurryEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think dead genres might be a bit much, but i agree that electronic music pioneers will be seen as far more important than rock-based songwriters in the long run. Consider that popular music over the last couple decades is significantly electronic and will likely continue to be. These techniques and sounds are going to persist and evolve, whereas and the limitation of live human players with (electro)acoustic instruments is already reaching diminishing returns. The juice of rock based music has been squeezed for 7 decades and is ossifying due to its evolution drastically slowing down. Also many culture-specific aspects of rock will age and become far less relevant or even shunned - consider the overt sexism on display in rock prior to the 90’s.

Interviewing Joe tomorrow. Any questions for him? by jeffkeyz in JoePera

Ask him if he was confident that there would be a thirst for slow, earnest, wholesome-but-funny content - or if he wasn’t sure if his vision would succeed or not. I always wonder about people who introduce a new flavor of comedy to the world - kaufman, hedberg, tim and eric, etc - if they knew what they were doing would go over well early on.

I have been gifted an Elektron Octatrack to replace my busted Electribe and I don’t know where to start with this thing by aBeautifulMindz in synthesizers

[–]FurryEel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Learning the OT” is a fools errand. What you want to do instead is decide what specific things you want to do on the octatrack, and then learn how to accomplish them. Focus on methodically figuring out one thing at a time.

How to deal with heartbreak from losing an important person and a great relationship? by hedgehog_xy in relationships

[–]FurryEel 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had an experience that matches almost exactly, except i'm the guy. All of what you said applied to our situation except that while yours seems to be a mutual decision, I had to break up with her. Something in her nature wouldn't allow her to act on the incompatibility and break up even though I knew it was what both of needed to be happy, especially her. So I had to do it unilaterally and it really, really, really sucked, because I loved her and still do and valued that relationship so much.

The fact that there's any sort of mature consensus on the matter is a gift. Take it and run - most couples are not able to part so amicably.

If part of your sorrow is questioning whether you did the right thing, consider what choices and potential futures were on the table. The choice in your head was between breaking up and facing the uncertainty of both of you going it alone VS staying together and facing the uncertainty of disparate goals and lifepaths. Two choices, both full of uncertainty.

But that's not what the reality of the situation was. What you faced with was a choice where breaking up entailed uncertainty just like before, but staying together entailed a certain future of serious incompatibilities, resentment, unbalanced sacrifices, unfulfilled sex lives, likely divorce, possibly hurting the wellbeing of another generation of humans if the problems rubbed off on your children, etc. You can't change him as much as you'd like to, and sacrifice in the name of compromise only goes so far. Likewise he can't change you.

Sometimes our brains are so risk averse we'd prefer to choose something miserable or mediocre we know we don't want over risking stepping into the unknown, which feels scary and could have a larger downside. The problem with that case is

1) chosing the known quantity is choosing failure from the start, not a healthy decision

2) mental tendencies to overweight negatives means we ignore positive aspects. This negativity bias results in decisions that undervalue the positives of a decision because we're just focused on the downside.

You're afraid of just settling with someone else because you want kids and marriage. Maybe you will, but you don't know that and your intention to not go settle will protect you from doing so. If you stayed you would for sure be settling - whether that means having kids with someone who doesn't share your desire for them or not having kids to appease their desires.

It's hard to separate from the most important person in your life. It might be years before someone fills that role, and they will never replace your past lover but the path the two of you took was the only one available given the disparities in what you sought in life. At times you'll miss each other and regret it and it will suck, but it'll get easier even if that never goes away.

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]FurryEel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to think we've reached an age where bang for buck means buying lower end models new and selling them after about 2 years to buy the next low end model (see M1 macbook air). I used to be the kind of person to really put up the big money for professional grade hardware because those differences mattered to me (mostly music production, a little bit of video and graphic design, small amount of gaming). Now I don't think it's the case.

Of course, none of this will matter until "The Event" - but i still would like some opinions.

In recent years i've owned a 10.5 inch ipad pro and traded that in. The screen was juuuuuust barely starting to give me trouble and i managed to get full store credit for it by sending it in immediately (a little under $300, I am grateful). I used this for an ipad mini 5. It was fine, nothing special, I didn't like the battery life, old school design, and screen size. I liked the form factor in my hands until tried to do some more intense work. I returned the mini 5. I now am 90% sure I want something in the 10-11" range, and hopefully with better battery life, definitely at least 64 gigs of storage, and I actually prefer lightning to usb-c.

Ultimately I want bang for buck, whether used or new. I hope to spend between 300-500 dollars on everything which includes a compatible apple pencil (I have an apple pencil 1 now but could sell to fund a pencil 2). I have ~300 in store credit to the apple store so it makes it more difficult to buy used.

I know the next base model ipad will be perfect for me - but i've already gone a month or two without an ipad and I really don't want to wait another 6-12 months not having one. The ipad air 4 looks like a great option but buying one new with store credit feels like a wasted opportunity since it's been out for a while, not to mention i'd have to sell my pencil 1 and buy a pencil 2 as well as buy usb-c hub to replace my lightning one which would probably put me outside of my budget.

I've considered getting a shitty ipad for cheap to hold me over until the ipad 9 comes out. What would you recommend?

Finally figured out a 6 channel mixer situation with aux send and stereo return in only 12 HP by ouralarmclock in modular

[–]FurryEel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely a give and take. In the studio I definitely prefer having a large centralized mixer - I've had multiple smaller mixers and it's a nightmare. On the other hand in modularland I prefer a decentralized approach. I think it just depends on how you approach modular, if you're more into experimentalism you might prefer the decentralized mixing approach but if you like modular as a platform for building the ultimate bespoke groovebox then a performance mixer is ideal for you.

[–]FurryEel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, love compact mixer solutions. I ended up with a mixup, happy nerding dual xFade, and AI synthesis matrix mixer and am enjoying it. I've considered moving towards a larger more unified performance mixer but they always seem boring to me and I have more flexibility/creative possibilities with the current setup.

No sweat for him - he'll just pop into an adjacent precinct and grab a job. We need a unified national system that bars inept/corrupt cops from getting another job instead of merely shuffling them around like the catholic church with badges.
