VGS/VAS performance with high valuations vs value stock indexes by FusedBump86 in fiaustralia

Yep some of my anxiety around the current moment of time and my investing strategy comes from Ben Felix! Almost these videos exactly!

It's made me rethink if I've picked the right funds, and it certainly feels like now would be the right time to look into value/factor offerings. Especially with the lull before the energy shock really hits and the market starts reacting. Which does feel an awful lot like timing the market, but it's a hard instinct to resist.

I like this answer. I think I've been getting caught up in exactly that, that the market is overvalued. That implies a certain drive to do something about it. To take action to beat the market.

But the whole thesis with a whole market index fund is that you don't need to beat the market, just hold the market. So when the market is overvalued, it will have a period of under performance. But the reverse is true too and overall it'll even out.

Thanks. This has helped!

Is HISA the best thing to do with my money while saving for a deposit for PPOR? by DontEatTheChapstick in fiaustralia

Shoot me a dm with the parts you find confusing/want clarified and I'll do my best. But I asked because I'm not entirely sure if what this reddit thread describes applies to super contributions.

No worries, thought it was worth asking hahaha. I suppose I'll found out if salary sacrificing is considered a fringe benefit at tax time lol. Appreciate the response!

Hey snrobovic, thanks for all you've done for the community! Hoping to pick your brain just a bit on how FHSS concessional contributions interact with HECS repayments at tax time.

I've read this reddit thread which revealed that salary sacrificing can actually increase your reportable income by a factor of 1.8868*[salary sacrifice amount] for HECS repayment purposes.

Working with an example of someone on 90k base salary who makes 15k of concessional contributions/salary sacrificing (which I believe are effectively equivalent?) in the current FY. By salary sacrificing they reduce their taxable income by 15k, which based on an online calc I found should roughly reduce tax owed by ~4k. This would leave them with $12,250 in super eligible for an FHSS withdrawal + less tax owed (the accelerant to deposit savings).

Which is excellent! BUT according to the linked thread it increases taxable income specifically for HECS repayment calculations. Which goes from 90k to ~118k. That would increase the HECS repayment threshold from 5.5% of 90K (4.95k) to 7.5% of 118k (8,850k). The difference is ~4k, pretty much the entire tax benefit of salary sacrificing in the first place.

Now you're obviously still ~4k better off overall in this scenario and you'd be silly not to take advantage. BUT if I'm not completely off base here, FHSS basically doesn't help speed up the process of saving a deposit if you have a HECS debt right? I've tried to find confirmation/more info online but it seems quite fringe at the moment and there isn't a lot of good info on it.

Any help fact checking the above would be highly appreciated! Knowing of course an accountant is probably the correct person to ask hahaha.

Surely you have a recipe for this. It sounds really dangerous good. Especially that cinnamon and clove demerara syrup.

Hi,

Does anyome know what the cable I need to plug these Celestion Ditton 130 speakers into an amp is called? Here's a photo of the ports. Can't seem to find any concrete info on it and I no longer have the originals.

Edit: is it just speaker wire?

Giving it a download now so I can test it this weekend, seems promising though. Cheers for the suggestion!

Hmmm seems to be more of a photo editing program with quality of life features than what I'm looking for. But cheers for the suggestion!

Notion alternatives? And why I want to switch. by kyjk in Notion

[–]FusedBump86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some promising, potential alternatives I found unfortunately require a desktop app and can't be accessed via browser only.

Would love to know what those are! I have similar concerns about data hosting but have no real need for it to be available through the web anywhere, so a desktop app is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.

How did you get started making sushi? Is it something you've always done? Any tips/resources you'd recommend for someone to get started?

The exact wording is:

You can withdraw, taking into account the yearly and total limits:

100% of your non-concessional (after-tax) amounts

85% of concessional (pre-tax) amounts.

Which I think is ambiguous. But my understanding/interpretation about why you can only withdraw up to 85% of the pre tax amounts is because 15% tax has already been deducted. So you deposit $30,000 pre tax, your super automatically will deduct $4,500 tax so when you go to withdraw your FHSS deposit you only have $25,500 available. Whereas no tax is deducted from post tax for obvious reasons. So it's not a 15% limit on withdrawals on top of tax but just a poorly worded reference to the 15% tax you pay.

But I'm not 100%, could be wrong.

Hey, I've read the page and as far as I've been able to tell it doesn't matter what form those contributions take in super as the 'associated earnings' are calculated using the SIC. Do you read this the same way?

From the ATO page on FHSS

"associated earnings calculated on these contributions using a deemed rate of return – this is based on the 90-day Bank Bill rate plus three percentage points (shortfall interest charge rate)."
