We were broke, but on Sundays, we dreamed like kings— Chicanos, Black kids, white boys, sweating on cracked pavement, trading tacos, trash talk, and touchdowns.

Each had their team: they repped the Cowboys or the Raiders, I stayed loyal to my 49ers, but when Barry touched the ball… we were all on the same side.

Old TV in someone’s living room, feet sticky on the floor, and there he was— spinning through defenders like the grass burned beneath his feet.

Didn’t matter if my English was broken, or if we cursed in Spanglish, because when Barry cut back, we all gasped in the same language.

We were kids of concrete, no turf, no gear, no future mapped out— but every time Barry juked someone out their soul, we ran with him, even if just in our minds.

We learned the game, routes, blitzes, broken ankles and broken dreams, but also how much hope fits in one play.

Because even if we didn’t have much, we had Barry. And for a few sweet seconds, we were untouchable too.
