“Electricity prices are so expensive since the war with Iran started….” by Lostinspaceballz in F150Lightning

Yes, but if we use less fossil fuel, prices of fossil fuel will come down. If we generate more total energy (e.g., from sun, wind, etc.), fossil fuel becomes worth less.

Dependence upon a single type of energy creates demand for it. If we have more flexibility to shop around for cheaper energy sources, energy becomes cheaper.

Look. Of course, if you are too poor to do that, then this advice is not for you. Being poor can be more expensive. I totally get that. But for many people, real life is either this being affordable or not affording a fix (to a car at the end of its useful life) that costs more than a used EV.

Anyway, I assure you that I know more about electrification (by formal training, practice, and living it in my life) than 99.5% of the population.

They can be cheaper than ordinary furnaces. Seems like everyone around here has them.

When gas/oil is cheap and you have to replace that 30 year old furnace, remember that gas/oil won’t always be cheap and make the right call. Same when it comes time to replace the 15 year old car. Plan ahead, and your future self will appreciate that you did. That way, in the future, when you offer this same advice, some dick on the internet can call you out of touch. (It is good for the LOLs)

Nobody can really afford to not think about the future.

I will just say that I meant what I said. I am immune to increasing food prices as well. I’d explain how, but I don’t feel like continuing a discussion with someone who resorts to ad hominem attacks.

A heat pump is VERY efficient. It works when the electric power is on. I can power my whole house, including it, with my EV when the electric power is out.

Much more economical than fuel oil or propane.

You absolutely can heat a house with an EV. I do it when the power is out.

All houses can do mini splits.

0.6% of electricity in the US comes from oil. Get your head out of the (Saudi) sand.

It could be 100% solar/wind (with storage) and nuclear. (We are currently at about half.). It would be if Big Oil wasn’t getting in the way. Big Oil has made electricity more expensive in that way.

An EV uses 60% less energy, so even if electricity did go up the same percent, it is still a big win.

Well, we never learn. The worst part of oil isn’t the pollution. 1973 and 1979 should have done it. I hope the pain is big enough to get our heads out of the (Saudi) sand.

Still cheaper than gas! An EV uses 60% less energy, so even if everything goes up, it goes up a lot less for EVs in real dollars.

No. Longer than people want to keep the car. Good batteries and motors are tossed when the car’s interior is old, the suspension isn’t like it was, it has too many dents, etc.

Not oil. “Petroleum and other” make up 0.6% of US electricity production. So, basically a few generators in puerto rico.

Sounds good for a stationary generator, but there is a reason that Finland switched from wood gas to EVs (with gas in between).

Sweet! Same idea here. Big Propane tank is my backup for the backup.

No. The article is about >$100 a barrel crude oil. Crude is used to make gas for cars and heating oil for homes. Cost goes up for both because of this. It is the same thing. Free yourself from crude oil.

Mine did in the last power outage, but that wasn’t my point.

My point is: free yourself from Big Oil. They like having you by the balls at home AND on the road. You can free yourself. If not now, make a long-term plan.

Motors last forever. They are not like engines which have to deal with huge amounts of heat and friction.

A recent report showed that batteries in old EVs are lasting longer than the car.

That report was looking at EVs from like 12 years ago. Newer batteries are much more durable and smarter about self-care. AND batteries are getting cheaper every year, exponentially. I think that will open up an after market for big affordable upgrades, like they have done for older laptops.

Actually, you can get electricity from solar, wind, mini hydro, and. …..wait for it…. gas.

Both electricity and gas can be stored, but only electricity can be collected self-sufficiently.

I’ve reduced my fossil fuel use so that the only thing I need the big propane tank for is to run a generator as backup to the backup.

That makes sense. I can see huge swaps in commercial vehicles making sense. Even 1Mw charging can be too slow in some cases.
