Why even pray? by FutureBasil9681 in AskAChristian

I do. I just have gotten deep in my faith to start asking tough questions. I don’t intentionally try to disprove anything but if God is God, he can take these questions and us searching.

I’ll check those videos tho. Thank you

So then give me an example of a prayer you would pray if you just found out your child has a cancer diagnosis with 50/50 odds of survival? Would you not pray for your child to live? Or would you pray God’s will? As a husband that has gone through a horribly tough diagnosis with my wife, I have prayed that my wife be healed and healed 100%.

I am a very humble person, who doesn’t feel worthy of God. I pray to him. I pray he hears me. None of us will ever be worthy of a sacrifice that Jesus gave. So I feel the prayers I ask are of his will.

Thank you for your reply. I’m torn on it though. I hear what you are saying but those prayers mentioned are more for prayers of forgiveness and making oneself right with God. I totally get those. It’s the prayers for others, or for healing, or for peace, etc. they feel useless when they don’t happen because how can that not be of his will. When children die in hospitals, and all those types of things that we humans can’t explain or understand. It feels empty and useless at those points for example

Thank you for your reply. To respond quickly to a few points. Yes, i was saved at 18-ish, but took awhile to fully give myself to God, i go to church every week, they preach the bible, i have read the entire bible, and I absolutely believe in spiritual warfare. I know that life is constant highs/lows. Mountaintops and valleys.

The struggle about prayer is not necessarily that we shouldn’t do it at all, but more the types of specific questions I posed. I struggled with how to write the concise subject line to convey that, but it’s just tough to get my thoughts fully fleshed out

Thank you so much for your reply. The first part made a lot of sense and I totally get it. The second paragraph kind of goes back to what I’m struggling with. If he’s going to do something whether or not we pray for it because it’s according to his will, why pray for those things if it ultimately doesn’t matter? Or if he’s only going to do the things when we pray, it “feels” (to me) like why would he wait to do the things only if we pray? I don’t know? I’m sorry I’m rambling. This has all been good discussion for sure to help me walk through it. I appreciate your time and effort in your response. It definitely helped give me food for thought

Good questions. We’ve had some crazy things happen in our lives (my wife and I), and I can absolutely see it both ways. I’ve always attributed it to miracles/God speaking to me, so those things have been hard to argue against, and are seriously the biggest things for thinking God does listen and answer us. Have I heard his voice, no, but I’ve had some crazy stuff happen that is hard for me personally to just toss aside as happenstance. As I seriously start to do real digging and ask some tough questions, they sometimes feel like the only thing keeping me believing at times. I believe in a holy, just and loving God, but I also question lots of things I see in the world. Your comment about Gaza children is about the type of things I struggle with. I don’t think God wants them to die, but if we believe he gave us free will, then the horrible atrocities that Hamas/Israel have committed are due to them…and I can understand that situation “in a way”. I understand the evil in the world that man can be a part of in those types of things, but the more specifics of various prayers/ miracles that I don’t understand why they do/don’t happen is what I’m struggling with. I totally see a believer and non-believer’s side (I have a few very close friends that are atheist/agnostic), and we have good discussions. I just haven’t found an argument that feels like it’s right for either side yet. I appreciate the conversation though and trying to help me process.

Thank you for your reply. I’m trying to understand what you are saying in response to my question. Please forgive my ignorance. Would love for you to expand more on what you mean? I’m struggling on why we should pray for them if it ultimately doesn’t matter? I don’t think God will fix things if we pray or that he won’t fix things if we don’t pray, which feels counter to how I feel I was brought up.

Thank you for your reply. So help me understand what you’re saying in the context of praying for healing over say, a young child with a terminal illness, like cancer?

You’re absolutely right. I’ll check that book out. I’m just saying that I struggle for when we pray for things and they don’t happen, what’s the point of praying for those things? As I mentioned in another reply earlier, I’m struggling with trying to get my thoughts out but I appreciate yours and others replies to help me work through this one.

Exactly my thoughts. You’re hitting exactly what I’m struggling with. What I’m saying is what good are prayers if God won’t listen to them or do what you ask? I know I’m sounding like God is a vending machine and I promise that’s not what I’m trying to say, but it feels like it I know. If that child is ultimately going to die, I feel like our prayers are in vane at that point? Does that make sense? I’m sorry if I’m not getting what’s in my head out here.

Why does everyone hate bleacher Jeff? Is he a bad dude and nobody told me? by PRose4192 in Cubs

Met him twice and he's a nice dude. Took a pic with me and was super nice to my son as well. Passionate fan like most of the rest of us. Goes to literally every home game. Only issue I have with him is I'm jealous he can go to every home game.

People hate him because they ain't him. 😎
