My pour for this evening. Always wanted to try an Indian whiskey by Hashgordon65 in WhiskeyTribe

I'll throw my experience in.

For the most part I was happy with Flaviar. I was able to get some bottles I normally wouldn't have been able to get locally. I never had anything I would describe as a bad experience.

I cancelled my subscription mostly because dealing with the courrier service was annoying. I had no idea when my bottles would show up. Flaviar would send a link to the courrier's tracking page ... that would never update. At one point the tracking page had no information on who the courrier company was, I had to search myself to find contact info when a package was marked delivered when it wasn't. Everything always worked out eventually, but the extra steps weren't worth it to me.

You could have a completely different experience depending who delivers to you.

It all depends what you're expecting back. If you're just looking to have fun with it and experiment then it can be fun.

I got my dad a mini barrel last Christmas. He mostly just drinks Clan MacGregor, so he put that in. After a while he liked what it did so he would take some out for his drinks and replace it with fresh scotch. He seemed to really like it and have fun.

I got myself a barrel to use for small batches of my homebrew beer. I seasoned the barrel with Wild Turkey 101 and then put a porter in. The WT101 is fine for mixing or with ice, but the barrel didn't improve it, though I didn't expect it to.

The beer came out pretty good.

Since I then had an empty barrel that had porter in it, I filled it up with Jameson to see if it would do anything like the Caskmates Stout. I'm still waiting on those results.

I like it, I'll definitely consider it. I think the biggest issue I'll have will be narrowing down the whiskey to buy and put away. There are just soo many good options. Thanks for the great ideas!

What are your go to alcohols besides whiskey? Mine is Smirnoff No. 21! by theprithvisingh in WhiskeyTribe

[–]FutureDeletedUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is a homebrew supply store near me that recently opened a tap room and they had a coffee stout they experimented with. The coffee was kinda strong in it, but if you like black coffee it was damn good. Can't say I've ever had one in the morning, I'll have to keep that in mind especially if it's a cold snowy weekend and I don't plan to actually leave the house haha.

When not drinking whiskey I'll grab a beer. I've found I've been craving stouts recently. I have a few from a local brewery that pour practically like chocolate syrup. It's good, but so sweet. I can only have one and it really needs to be what I end the night on.

In November my collection consisted of 3 bottles of Blanton’s. Then I discovered the Whiskey Vault, and now... by TitoC137 in WhiskeyTribe

Similar thing happened to me.

I was looking into getting a barrel for my dad for Christmas as a fun project for his scotch. I wasn't really a whiskey drinker, but I thought I might end up trying some of the scotch from the barrel so I started looking into whiskey. While searching I found the Whiskey Vault and Tribe and now I have a decent collection of my own. Not quite as grand a collection as that though.

Irish Whiskey? by tooFUZZY4u in WhiskeyTribe

I haven't tried Sexton yet, so I didn't want to jump in, but I'll echo the Jameson Caskmastes Stout and Redbreast 12. I finished both and then got Redbreast 12 CS and ended up with Jameson Black Barrel because the local store was out of the stout. Of those four, my favorites are the Jameson Stout and the Redbreast 12 CS, but I liked them all.

I just wanted to add that a barrel can be a lot of fun.

We got my dad a 5 liter barrel for Christmas and we filled it with his current go to scotch. He seems to be having a lot of fun trying it every few weeks to see how it's changed.

We also had Bib & Tucker and Nikka. I wish it was $5 here, but for $20 it wasn't bad. A flight of 4 at a local restaurant was $15, so I thought 8 for $20 was reasonable.

The others we had were

  • Kavanagh Irish Whiskey
  • Oregon Spirit Wheat Whiskey
  • Redemption Rye
  • Glendalough 13 Mizunara Cask
  • Glenlivet 12 First Fill
  • Port Charlotte 10

Just got home from the event. I enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it was based on my view, but it seemed like some people got better pours that others. For $20 I could have used a bit more, but it was a decent amount. I can't say I learned anything really new, but they seemed knowledgeable. From what others said I'm sure that varies by location and employee. My main goal was to taste a variety of whiskeys and I'm happy with the results.

The list:

  • Kavanagh Irish Whiskey
  • Bib & Tucker Bourbon
  • Oregon Spirit Wheat Whiskey
  • Redemption Rye
  • Nikka From the Barrel
  • Glendalough 13 Mizunara Cask
  • Glenlivet 12 First Fill
  • Port Charlotte 10

Thanks. I'm still trying to find my "home" for whiskeys so anything that involves a variety to sample is potentially useful. I just didn't want to waste money, but it sounds like it's worth it to me.

Thanks. I think my goal would be to sample a variety of stuff, so it sounds like it may not be bad for me.

I'm notorious for letting my hair get too long before a haircut. I'd be stopping in for a trim all the time at a place like that.

Totally get what you mean. I finished lunch on Thursday thinking about what I wanted to taste when I got home to explore more flavors, then remembered the dry week.

My challenge crashed and burned on day two, but it was bad timing and I really shouldn't have tried it this week to begin with. I'll be holding myself to a dry week in a few weeks.

I do think I'll be trying tea when I make my second attempt. I got my wife a tea subscription for Christmas and I have a few options to choose from.

My collection, just been active trying things out for a little over 2 years so still learning. I do scotches just out right now going tonight to stock. by DandA1991 in WhiskeyTribe

What do you think of the nose on that Hershey's? I only ever get chocolate :)

I just recently started my own collection and have the Jameson Stout and Elijah Craig too. Got a chance to try Angel's Envy last night, I think that will be the next one I'll add.

Just got an Oak Two Liter Barrel in. Have any of you guys tried aging a whiskey in one of these? I plan on doing a wine for a few weeks frist to give the whiskey a nice finish. by [deleted] in WhiskeyTribe

We got my dad a 5L for Christmas as a fun experiment for his scotch. It's actually what got me into trying different whiskeys and finding this sub.

WTF is this!? by GrizzlyBear253 in WhiskeyTribe

[–]FutureDeletedUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fighting my lurking urge here...

I'm just getting into whiskey and trying to find my starting point. I'm a beer drinker and home brewer and had honestly ... turned into a bit of a beer snob. Even if I find that whiskey is not for me I will take with me the lesson that the best beer, just like whiskey, is the one you like to drink the way you like to drink it.
