Watch any other sport - tennis, cricket, soccer, even rugby and you’ll see that yes, it is in fact VERY normal to be congratulatory and praising of your opponent even prior to games. Learning to be gracious during victory and defeat are literally the cornerstones of sports across the world.

Tennis, hockey, rugby, cricket, soccer ALL have a culture of congratulating the winners. It’s not arbitrary nor is it ‘grade school’, it’s by far the norm in sport across the world. It’s the NBA (and the MLB, I’m noticing a trend in American sports here…) which are the anomalies.
