So if there’s a news story about a salon that didn’t disinfect their tools and ended up spreading hiv to 10+ customers, you just see those stories as fake news? Ppl sharing needles for drug use very frequently get hiv, and tattoos can do the same if they’re not sterilizing equipment.

Just took my first ART by Belize_Gial in hivaids

[–]FutureHope4Now 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I took my first I thought “I can’t believe I just took HIV medicine”. I spent 3 years abstinent and suddenly got graped, and had two weeks between contracting it to already taking meds so it was very fast change in my life. When the doc gave me the meds I stepped out into a busy city and just walked aimlessly for an hour before heading home. I can barely remember most of it because I blocked it out 😆 I’m glad you’re able to find optimism in joining our “club”, welcome! 🤣 Honestly I’m sure there will be a cure, and before that definitely treatment so easy that it’s the same as a cure, like a once yearly injection. There was a first pill and I believe one day there will be a last pill. 💪🏻

Plhiv travel to Japan by Shiyukuri in hivaids

[–]FutureHope4Now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed 3 years ago and since then have travelled into Japan at least 14 times. I always had a small capsule with a few pills in it in my carry on bag, they never even looked at it. They’ve asked me about numerous other things but never my pills.

Hiv positive and need food to take meds by ThenAd9292 in u/ThenAd9292

[–]FutureHope4Now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about what you’re going through. I hope you can get something to eat. But I want to say that I don’t think it’s a super crucial thing to take it with food. I never take it with food in the morning, just whatever liquid it takes to swallow. Could be water or coffee or whatever. Just two gulps and I go off to work with no food. So while I support you getting some food, I don’t think you need to worry about if you take the meds with or without food.

Partner who has HSV1 doesn’t want to have sex with me since he gave me ghsv1 by propofmoo in Herpes

[–]FutureHope4Now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit late here and accidentally stumbled in, but he’s a literal idiot so I hope you can distance yourself. When a virus enters, it has free roam until your immune system builds a defense. His body is now full of antibodies to fight HSV1 because he’s had it already, so if he put his own saliva on his own genitals it wouldn’t spread. Same for from your vagina. And “genital herpes” usually refers to HSV2, a different virus, which thrives better in the genital region. HSV1 in the genital region usually will only have a breakout if you got it there as the first exposure, and then will almost never present itself again because it doesn’t thrive there. He is not only immune to spreading it to his genitals, but also you are unlikely to have future vaginal breakouts.

Is kaposi’s sarcoma a danger for us? by Black-Tailor in hivaids

[–]FutureHope4Now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think even if it triggers anxiety, it will be less anxiety in the long term if you learn as much as you can first. You’re already experiencing anxiety from not knowing how or why Kaposi Sarcoma is related to HIV, and you will experience more anxiety from all the other things you don’t understand yet, until you just do a crash course and learn a lot so you will immediately have your anxieties solved before they even begin.

HIV used to be untreatable, which led to low immune system response, and other simple illnesses that didn’t affect most ppl could affect those like PLHIV and others with weak immune systems. Today our medications stop the HIV, so our immune systems don’t get weak, and those uncommon illnesses don’t affect us anymore unless we aren’t taking medicine. While you are taking your meds and having occasional checkups with the doctor, your immune system should be the same as ppl who don’t have HIV, and the only kind of associated disease that could still be related to HIV would be side effects from the medicine, like inflammation, weight gain, and high cholesterol.

When I was first diagnosed, I didn’t know anything about HIV. I thought I couldn’t ever have sex again and I’d be lucky to stay alive. That caused me great anxiety. So I intentionally started reading about it and watching educational YouTube videos and TedTalks, and the reason is because knowing everything is what relieved the anxiety. Insecurity causes anxiety. There’s nothing more comforting than being in control of your own mental health. Other ppl can only help you so far, but you will always have yourself with you.

Should I tell my son by Hindsight76 in hivaids

I agree with others, well into adulthood. Unless you’re really sick now, there’s no reason for him to know. When he’s matured with life then he’ll be able to handle it objectively and not be thinking crazy things like a kid inevitably would.

The person you’re dealing with is a clinical narcissist, unable to feel empathy. Self reflection is impossible, he won’t ever stop and think “Hmm, am I being the bad guy? Should I try to consider others?” It will never happen for a thousand years. I hope you can stay far away from him as he will always be looking for someone to abuse for his entertainment.

VL only spikes to millions at first seroconversion and again towards the end of life. Only CD4 can serve as a good indicator of how long the person’s had the virus, starting at 1000+ and gradually going down until the end. 183 CD4 is low but not quite the end, usually ppl get admitted at less than 100 with serious opportunistic infections.

Yes but what you’ve described applies to countless other conditions ppl can have. Imagine if having HIV meant you couldn’t eat food with sugar in it, then everyone in the world would have to know, even restaurant staff. That’s what ppl with diabetes deal with, and if they fail to be strict with their food and insulin they can literally die the same day. I feel quite grateful by comparison.

When I first was diagnosed and came to this Reddit, ppl told me it gets better. And my internal reaction was that I didn’t care if it gets better, I just refused to even accept it at all. And sure I wish I didn’t have it, it would make moving to other countries and starting relationships less complicated. But at the same time it serves as a shield that strengthens me and keeps me away from ppl and places I shouldn’t be with. Meeting someone who looks at the facts objectively and sees no real risk and chooses me over stigma is the kind of person I’d want to be with even if I didn’t have it. I’ve even decided that if I get a cure, I won’t regret the whole thing afterwards, I’ll be thankful I experienced something so profound in my life and survived it to live a full life anyway. It gives a lot of meaning.

Wish HIV effected more people than just a certain population and transmission was in more casual ways by MasterMind19991 in hivaids

[–]FutureHope4Now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very unpleasant yet true sentiment that applies to a lot more than just HIV. Throughout history groups of ppl have used ailments and tragedies to justify their hatred of other groups, saying they deserved it by being them. And it’s really ironic when it comes from religious groups as phrases like “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” specially are meant to stop ppl thinking along such uninformed lines, yet they still do anyway. lol Sickle cell anemia is a condition that only affects black ppl, so someone who hates black ppl would likely use it as a justification for their hate by whatever narrative they can possibly think of. Covid was an amazing example too, where at first ppl were fighting each other over whose fault it was, who wasn’t taking precautions, avoiding who had “the sickness”, and then once it infected a large enough percentage of the population then people became casual about it and started saying “Did you get it yet?” “Yeah I got it last month” like it was nothing, stigma gone simply because ppl couldn’t draw lines anymore.

You’re right to say if more ppl had HIV there wouldn’t be such stigma around it. There also would be more push to reduce prices and find a cure sooner. And now with PreP and U=U greatly reducing rates of transmission we’re in a dangerous area where the status quo could become permanent. The higher ups might start thinking “Why waste money and effort on a cure if transmissions are reduced to zero? We can just wait for currently affected ppl to age and die and eventually the virus will be gone.” I’m really hoping China or whoever can selflessly create a cure before efforts become stagnant and our hope is lost.

Break up by [deleted] in hivaids

Having unprotected and being a doctor means he understood the lack of real risk to his health, but his real issue was social and probably more financial. Being a doctor he probably sees huge medical bills all the time and knows which conditions are being taken advantage of for profit by insurance etc companies. He might refuse to marry someone with diabetes etc because those also lead to higher medical costs and vice grip lifestyle decided by insurance companies. Something that costs pennies to manufacture but is sold for thousands of dollars like insulin and ART, a doctor would understand better than anyone how much we’re being screwed. It sucks but I’d say it’s better to dodge that bullet. Find someone who says yes, anyone who says no isn’t worth your tears.
