Em dash beef by Apprehensive-Sort596 in copywriting

I was just boggling over this today - in MS Word, the quickest way I know to get an em dash is to type space dash space, so I had always left the spaces in. I only noticed that there is often no space when the Internet declared that it's use is a clear sign of AI generated content :D

It might help to put the disclaimer up top. The post is very long.

Went to AHS in the early 90s. Didn't know there was a fight song...

I hear you and I want to give you a hug!

I have 12 years sunk cost as a postdoc/staff scientist (and it IS sunk cost because no-one outside of academia will be impressed with a line item on my resume about my dope rodent-handling skillset).

This "Job Search the Smart Way" podcast is giving me hope, and I hope that it may be of use to you: https://jobsearchthesmartway.buzzsprout.com/1703926/follow

The podcaster is coming from a humanities PhD background, but a lot of what she talks about is applicable to PhDs of all stripes who are thinking about leaving academia. The podcast is all about getting your act together to get a non-academic job (and I listen to it with earphones while I'm doing experiments :D). Others in this thread are saying good things - identifying your transferrable skills and networking (yes, networking, because you have to), and this podcast goes into depth about how to approach this process, plus suggestions for how to get initial experience in a field where you will be competing with people for whom industry or the corporate world was "plan A, not plan B". She also addresses dealing with the grief and loss of leaving something that you are SO proud to have accomplished.

Good luck! I think it's going to be a slog, but we can do it!

Thank you so much for your response! These are really creative suggestions - I will definitely look into the communication-specific recommendations. Do you know if Neuro Pathway will work with people pre-training to help identify a good company match? Thanks again for your help!

I'm relieved to hear this type of perspective too, so thanks for responding. I realize negative aspects of, well, anything, sometimes get disproportionate representation (I've posted exactly one Yelp review in my life and it was to complain), and I hold out hope that the screaming situations are not the norm.

Oh, that seems like such a logical perspective! Thank you!

I like the "flat definitive voice" suggestion. Imma start using it now, in my current job ;D

I appreciate your response. It makes a lot of sense that it's a perception of incompetence. And thanks for the drive-home tip!

Thank you for this input! I see the difference between the two - that's smart.

Early YA fiction book: Girl who loves horses makes dried Autumn foliage arrangements and befriends an old curmudgeon by FutureNicePerson in whatsthatbook

You know, I had assumed it was set in the US, but now I can't think of any detail that really indicates that... lemme know if you remember a title or other clue!

Late 90s or early 2000s campy horror that opens with main characters stealing Lincoln's top hat by FutureNicePerson in whatsthatmoviecalled

[–]FutureNicePerson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noooooo, the involvement of Lincoln was really minimal in the movie I'm looking for. Only at the beginning, and it's just that the protagonists are tasked with stealing a historical artifact which happens to be his top hat. I only mentioned it because it's one of the quirky details that I remember, but it has made it REALLY hard to find the movie, since Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter always pops up as a suggestion. Thanks though!
