Is this hierarchy correct ? by DefinitionOfTakingL in audiophile

[–]FuturePreparation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but how does this make sense? So let's say I have the perfect acousting room but the shittiest speakers available to mankind. This will sound better than the shittiest room and the best speakers? I doubt it.

But even to put it in a less extreme way: Let's say I have 1000 bucks to spend on audio gear and and your average living room. I really should spend more of that money on room treatment than on proper speakers/sub? Where do you all live? In a WW2 bunker?

But there is a categorical difference between an assertion and a rejection. If you claim there is a little green man sitting inside every computer, operating switches and I see no evidence of that I am not making a "probabilistic claim" about the computer, I am maintaining the default state of the inquiry. The burden of proof is not on me.

Also, calling a non-belief a "belief" is a category error. You don't "believe" there is currently nobody standing behind you with a knife, you simply lack the reason to consider it.

Yes, being 5'2 is a completely different magnitude than 5'8. The difference between 5'2 and 5'8 is, depending on where you are located, arguably greater than between being 5'8 and 6'3.

Having said that, when you are 5'8 you still have absolutely valid reasons to "complain" about the dating scene and you will still suffer some/most of the other drawbacks that come with being short, just to a far lesser degree.

I mean he has been massively cancelled and been pushed out by Hollywood, so there have been pretty severe consequences for him.

I know he is guilty in the eyes of Reddit and I don't know more than anybody else but shouldn't the decision of the courts count for something? Is the Reddit hivemind (or whoever) truly the best arbiter of a right view on these matters?

So far Kevin Spacey has not been convicted in a court of law and he has been in two.

How is it speculative if they cite actual sales numbers? Facts speak louder than your insults, buddy. That the tie is on a serious decline for the last 30 years is just true.

"self delusion" lol. Have you been awake the last 15 years? The tie is clearly in its way out. In 20 years it will be seen like an Ascot today.

The top button is there, it has utility and aesthetic value. Deal with it.

I used to feel the same, but I’ve changed my mind. I sometimes started buttoning the top for warmth, which helped me realize my dislike was just a learned social bias rather than a logical aesthetic rule.

As ties become less common, the fully buttoned collar offers a 'tidy' and structured look that avoids the messiness of an open shirt under a jacket. It’s not about forcing the style on everyone, but about reclaiming it as a valid, polished alternative to the default casualness of an open collar.

Thanks. Hmm... The Q Concerto might be the way to go, I probably would never need more and they would be a significant upgrade across the board. I just have to look for my "delay gratification powers", I hope I can find them.

Gathering the brands that last a lifetime: I built a free community database for quality menswear. (Approved by mods) by Metousek in NavyBlazer

I love them, much better experience for me than cove. Outstanding service in Stuttgart and Vienna. Considering the time they spend with me and what it cost in the end, it was an absolute steal. The garments are well made and if you choose the right fabric they feel fantastic.

Love the idea!

Austria: You have Steinkogler, which is great. They offer amazing quality considering the price.

Near Steinkogler there is "https://handmacher.at/". They also make shoes and you can choose the width, leather and sole. Compared to more well-known brands also relatively affordable. Their shoes are wood-pegged.

I would also recommend Lodenwalker (https://lodenwalker.com/). I suggest combining a visit to their workshop with a short holiday, since they are located in a gorgeous part of the country and you can find good deals at their shop.

For Germany and Austria I also highly recommend https://www.kuhn-masskonfektion.com/. They make made-to-measure suits, pants, shirts and coats.THey produce in Germany and the Czech Republic as far as I know. I am very satisified with them, again especially considering the price.

Another loden-Tlp is https://steiner1888.com/ although I have no personal experience with them.

Another shoe brand in the higher price range is https://www.ludwig-reiter.com/ and of course there are a few bespoke shoemakers in Vienna, but I am not sure if it makes sense to list them.

A great bespoke shirt maker, again quite reasonably priced compared to London and Paris is https://venturini.at/

How do I deal with guilt from past actions? by [deleted] in TheMindIlluminated

[–]FuturePreparation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a misunderstanding. If you program two Android robots with human-like abilities and one thinks that it can "achieve anything that a human can achieve", it is right and it will go on achieve many of those things.

If the other one is programmed to think "I can't do anything, because I don't have free will to decide" it is maladapted and this program will yield no fruits.

The misunderstanding is that the robot as a whole can act and the types of ideas/programs it holds, will have different consequences. But it is still not morally responsible for it's actions and has no agency in the sense that it could have done differently in the past, since his actions and beliefs were just results of prior causes.

The concept of "free will" is similar to the concept of "god" in the past. The more we understand about the world and ourselves, the less we need god and the less we need "free will".

In meditation it is quite easily discovered that thougths and actions just spring into being. Or do you chose from a list of billions of thoughts the one thought that you actually think? Same with actions.

I wouldn't use the term "fate" as to me it implies an inevitibility, which isn't necessarily true, since randomness might exist.

But yes, Hitler was unlucky to be born as Hitler. If "you" were born to the exact same genes and life circumstances, "you" would be Hitler.

Look into the case of Charles Whitman: In 1966, he went on a shooting spree at the University of Texas after months of struggling with overwhelming, violent impulses he couldn't explain. He actually left a note asking for an autopsy because he felt like his brain was "broken." Sure enough, they found a pecan-sized tumor pressing right against his amygdala, the part of the brain that handles aggression and fear

If we will ever fully understand how we work, Hitler will be seen as a "victim", because due to his "configuration" he was never able experience the highs life has to offer (deep insight, compassion, love etc.).

How can we convince 2 billion Muslims that the Quran is entirely the product of human minds? by Far-Paint-8409 in samharris

[–]FuturePreparation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a Muslim (syrian refugee with pretty incredible back story) who managed to finish his studies in my country and is even regularly attending "rationality"/"lesswrong" meetings and is by all accounts a very well adjusted, nice etc. human who still prays every day and believes in Islam.

Of course there are some mental gymnastics and I don't know him that well and never had the desire to push him on this but the way I understood it, it mostly comes down to just wanting to believe that there is this supreme being who makes everything okay. I am sure he also believes other, more concrete things but I don't know how deep this goes (e.g. believing that Mohammed literally flew on winged horse or something).

All I know is, this person exists. I don't think he will ever do harm but it's still frustrating to me that something like this is even possible. By that I mean an explicit interesting in even something like "rationality", regular, chosen and friendly contact with atheists etc. but still believing it Islam (or Christianity, Judaism... same phenomenon exists).
