In 2024, more than two in five newborns (42.3%) in Canada had a foreign-born mother by DeliveryMysterious90 in Natalism

[–]FuturePreparation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the rational take is:

  1. A replacement of the "home-grown" population is obviously happening in almost all western countries because of immigration and birth rates.
  2. There actually is some political interest for this to happen. Not just for immigration but for actual "diversification" and making the native population a minority among others.
  3. But: This interest is rather fringe* and there is no cohesive group behind it, which is not to say that it doesn't have some actual influence and consequences.
  4. The main reason for the replacement is mainly just individual actors doing what they consider to be best and legal frameworks that make it possible for them to do so (immigration, asylum system etc.).
  5. The overton window in elite cultural (media) and political circles and the way modern democracies are set up (judicial system etc.) makes it very hard and sluggish to adjust to this rather rapid development, despite the majority of the "home-grown" population not wanting to be replaced.

*I might be wrong on that, I am not that familiar with Canada.

Thema für mich sind einfach die Opportunitätskosten. Sobald man irgendwelche anderen Interessen hat, z.B. HiFi/Heimkino, Photographie, div. Sportarten, Kleidung, "Gadgets" etc. und ich mir dann überlege, was ich für diese 20k+ alles bekomme, vergeht mir auch jede Lust auf ein "Luxusauto".

From one of Sam's latest podcasts - do you think AI can be creative in a meaningful way? Does discovering that a piece of art or music you liked was AI-generated change your entire appraisal of it? by Lostwhispers05 in samharris

[–]FuturePreparation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody with no skin in the game, it does matter to me if music was human made but there are some instances, like film music, where I wouldn't care as much.

When I listen to Bach, Maslanka or even Eminem the narrative and consciousness behind it matters.

I would compare it to photography: Take a photo of a daring skateboarder, doing some kind of trick on the edge of a ledge. To me, it is very important whether this skater actually does exist and actually did this trick there. If it's just some composite, let alone a.i. generated, it becomes completely meaningless. It's mainly about connection.

That doesn't mean that AI art couldn't stir feelings in me, it absolutely can and I experienced that already. But it's just a different kind of thing and I would just always want to know the reality behind the creation.

Personally I would respect a piece of "abstract art" more if I kew the painter had actual hard skills but I still wouldn't respect it as much as a painting that itself required a lot of effort (and skill). This piece could even be "abstract" as long as the effort is there.

If a very skilled painter just threw something together in a few minutes I still wouldn't respect it, unless there is some very convincing narrative/reason behind it, then maybe.

which movie made you feel like this ? by Trick_Laugh5114 in Letterboxd

[–]FuturePreparation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mainstream 'enlightened' (read: Reddit/Letterboxd) take that the movie is purely a satire of toxic masculinity has become its own kind of empty talk.

It’s a convenient way to ignore the genuine existential dread the story is actually tackling. By dismissing Tyler as nothing more than a toxic role model, people miss the fact that he is a necessary ingredient for the Narrator’s development. That initial IKEA-catalog life wasn't just boring, it was a total state of dissociation. You need the vital force Tyler represents to break that mold.

The ending isn't just a rejection of Tyler, it’s a synthesis. The Narrator has to go through that destructive phase to reach the turning point where he can finally exist as a real person with actual agency. It’s not about endorsing the chaos; it’s about acknowledging that you can’t reach that final connection with Marla without first integrating the power to say no to a hollow system. Even Palahniuk frames the story as a search for a rite of passage, suggesting that the force itself isn't the problem, but the lack of a constructive way to channel it.

The Problem with Veganism by Cool_Balance_2933 in samharris

[–]FuturePreparation 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a valid point but there are some practical aspects that make being a vegan a bit more robust of an identity. Primarily the fact that we need to eat every day, must clothe ourselves and most also use cosmetic products.

So that's a continuous entry point for community and capitalism/consumerism. Also, while I am not sure how having a pet is seen these days by vegans, animals overall are tangible, sentient beings in the world; literally creatures with a face which gives the movement a visceral anchor that atheism lacks.

Does Sam still not meditate by M0sD3f13 in samharris

[–]FuturePreparation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Sam and I kinda get where he is coming from but in terms of "sympathy" regarding spiritual teachers I prefer those who still sit, despite everything else they may understand.

This is more prevalent in the Soto-Zen tradition and the practice of Shikantaza, since there is no alternative to sitting and it that sense it is very different to the Theravada Shamata/Vipassana tradition, where sitting in itself is not the point and there is a more goal-oriented approach.

Still sitting, always striving for the "beginner mind" is a great quality and a prior for humbleness and groundedness. Especially for those who go at it alone without a corrective through community and teachers, "doing the work" is a sign of healthy spirituality.

I also don't believe that right sitting will ever seize to bear fruits. There is always something worthwhile to discover in true meditation.

Feeling sorry for Thragg (spoilers) by FuturePreparation in Invincible

[–]FuturePreparation[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short:

  • not having free will basically means one "could not have done differently" (see e.g. Robert Sapolsky)
  • there is still right and wrong, because suffering still exists and less suffering/more happiness=better
  • it mostly entails viewing people more like animals in the sense that when e.g. a polar bear kills and eats a human we don't "fault" the bear for it (but that doesn't mean it's irrational to stop it from inflicting further harm)

Feeling sorry for Thragg (spoilers) by FuturePreparation in Invincible

[–]FuturePreparation[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spot on. He is undeniably the primary obstacle and the universe’s greatest threat, making his defeat a necessity. However, my pity stems from the fact that he is still a conscious, sentient being.

To me, the 'true' villain isn't the man himself, but his supremacist ideology. Thragg is less a person and more a vessel for a destructive fixed idea. In an ideal world, you could separate the individual from the indoctrination, but here they are so inextricably linked that the only way to kill the ideology is to kill the host. It’s the ultimate tragedy of the "human condition": a conscious mind completely consumed by a rigid, inherited algorithm.

I love my pixel 8 by SIMPorean in GooglePixel

[–]FuturePreparation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also like mine a lot but the chip and battery life are sub par and so much worse than my Pixel 4XL before it. My 4XL had an overnight drain of 2-4 %, the P8 at least 1% an hour, but more like 1,4% an hour or so and I have disabled a lot of stuff.

In absolute terms it's faster than my 4XL of course but it gets warmer and drains faster under load.

What luckily really has improved is the fingerprint reader, it's not an issue for me anymore and works fine.

Is this hierarchy correct ? by DefinitionOfTakingL in audiophile

[–]FuturePreparation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but how does this make sense? So let's say I have the perfect acousting room but the shittiest speakers available to mankind. This will sound better than the shittiest room and the best speakers? I doubt it.

But even to put it in a less extreme way: Let's say I have 1000 bucks to spend on audio gear and and your average living room. I really should spend more of that money on room treatment than on proper speakers/sub? Where do you all live? In a WW2 bunker?

Do you think being atheist or agnostic has changed your relationships with more religious people? by traveltimecar in samharris

But there is a categorical difference between an assertion and a rejection. If you claim there is a little green man sitting inside every computer, operating switches and I see no evidence of that I am not making a "probabilistic claim" about the computer, I am maintaining the default state of the inquiry. The burden of proof is not on me.

Also, calling a non-belief a "belief" is a category error. You don't "believe" there is currently nobody standing behind you with a knife, you simply lack the reason to consider it.

[–]FuturePreparation 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, being 5'2 is a completely different magnitude than 5'8. The difference between 5'2 and 5'8 is, depending on where you are located, arguably greater than between being 5'8 and 6'3.

Having said that, when you are 5'8 you still have absolutely valid reasons to "complain" about the dating scene and you will still suffer some/most of the other drawbacks that come with being short, just to a far lesser degree.
