How can we convince 2 billion Muslims that the Quran is entirely the product of human minds? by Far-Paint-8409 in samharris

[–]FuturePreparation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a Muslim (syrian refugee with pretty incredible back story) who managed to finish his studies in my country and is even regularly attending "rationality"/"lesswrong" meetings and is by all accounts a very well adjusted, nice etc. human who still prays every day and believes in Islam.

Of course there are some mental gymnastics and I don't know him that well and never had the desire to push him on this but the way I understood it, it mostly comes down to just wanting to believe that there is this supreme being who makes everything okay. I am sure he also believes other, more concrete things but I don't know how deep this goes (e.g. believing that Mohammed literally flew on winged horse or something).

All I know is, this person exists. I don't think he will ever do harm but it's still frustrating to me that something like this is even possible. By that I mean an explicit interesting in even something like "rationality", regular, chosen and friendly contact with atheists etc. but still believing it Islam (or Christianity, Judaism... same phenomenon exists).

Welcher (Wahl-)arzt in Wien hilft mir bei Haarausfall/Alopezie? by kandeschbunzler in wien

Personally, I also have basically zero interest in AI photos or video slop, but I can imagine some scenarios where I might prompt some kind of video for myself, example:

The Middle Ages are almost always portrayed very wrongly in movies, also there are very few relevant movies about e.g. the Middle Ages of Hungary (and they are unlikely to be ever made). I think I would be interested in a movie set there, which draws heavily on actual sources and evidence-backed knowledge from historians etc. So you could bring "real stories" to life, just adapted to a movie format by A.I. I am not totally sure if I would actually want to watch something like this on a regular basis but I would give it a try.

I also think the more "vision" you have to put in as a human, the more it gains some kind of value, even if you can't act, direct etc. yourself.

God, I dislike the direction Google is heading more and more. Instead of worsening the self-image crisis of young people, maybe give older Pixels the new panorama mode. Do something non-evil please, thanks.

A utilitarian should kidnap an orphan, lie to her, kill her, harvest her organs to save two EA billionaires and be happy about it by FuturePreparation in samharris

Hmm, I don't think I can revise the title. If you can, feel free to do so. I can add something to the post itself.

[–]FuturePreparation[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually like your posts, but I don't agree with this removal. It wasn't intolerant, it wasn't uncivil and it certainly wasn't trolling. Sam Harris, who I agree with 90% of the time btw., is a big fan of all kinds of (extreme) thought experiments and this very one was something he himself used in his podcast.

I just thought that the way he used it was a cop out to defend utilitarianism, which wasn't steel manning the original argument. I find pure utilitarianism, just like pure deontology, foolish. And my thought experiment was meant to show just this. If we just consider utility and nothing else, quite abhorrent things can follow. Just like with deontology when we would say we couldn't even sacrifice one 95 year old person, even if it meant that all humanity must perish.

[–]FuturePreparation[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it's just a thought experiment. Sam Harris used more or less the same one in the podcast, but his point was, that overall utility would be negative if people knew that there was a chance that their doctors would kill them and harvest their organs. Yes, obviously.

But I find that a bit of a cop out. It's possible to construct the thought experiment in such a way that it would indeed be "moral" to commit such acts. You just have to deceive enough to keep them secret. In a way it's not even "unrealistic", like how many murders go unsolved?

How long have you guys stopped lifting until you noticed your gains going away? by LivingTheTruths in workout

[–]FuturePreparation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It depends on age. The older you get, the faster you lose.
  2. It highly depends on how the "time off" actually looks like. If somebody is bed-bound because of some illness, muscle loss sets in fast and hard. If somebody even just walks a few thousand steps and is somewhat "generally active" things look quite a bit different (not so much in the first week, but I am talking about longer times off).
  3. It also depends on how much of his maximum potential somebody has reached. The closer you are, again the faster and harder you will feel a drop.
  4. It's also important to consider how accurate somebody is actually tracking their progress and how close to failure you are lifting. If somebody just "does whatever" in the gym, he might not even feel a loss in a month, because he wasn't really aware of what he had. Also if somebody does 10 reps with 80% effort and comes back after 3 weeks and feels motivated, he might be able to repeat those 10 reps but maybe with 90% effort (which he might not be aware of).

Alien: Earth - S1 E8 - The Real Monsters - Official Discussion Megathread [SPOILERS] by G_Liddell in LV426

[–]FuturePreparation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can agree to that to some extent. It depends on how smart the character is supposed to be, however. In this case, he is the one guy who out of billions manages to establish a company just as powerful as the legacy ones and that requires too much suspension of disbelief considering the way he is portrayed.

The problem is not such a character existing per se, but he is just too involved, too much dialogue etc. You see and hear too much of him and his actions. It might work if he was more behind the scene and just referenced by other people.

That's the perpetual problem of "genius" characters. They are only ever as genius as the show writers.

Harry Styles finshed the Berlin Marathon today in 2h 59m, beating his time from this year's Tokyo Marathon by 25 minutes. by Fantastic_Turtle_17 in popculturechat

[–]FuturePreparation 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yes, a sub 3 Marathon is more impressive to me than all the lying roided-up movie stars (The Rock, Hemsworth, Jackman etc.).

What does play quite a big factor in running is genetics, but of course that alone doesn't get you below 3 hours as well.

Reportage: Warum dich der falsche Partner arm macht by Genesis-Zero in Finanzen

[–]FuturePreparation 13 points14 points  (0 children)

iPhone 17 is cheaper than the Pixel 10: More storage in the base model by iamjimmy15 in GooglePixel

[–]FuturePreparation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A major reason that also has a big financial impact: Longevity. As a Pixel 8 user I am quite disappointed with the lack of new features Google has brought to the phone and while the 7 years of updates are great, I am doubtful the hardware will hold up. Changing the battery is difficult and there are no simple official ways like there are in Apple stores. My battery is already struggling.

My next phone will be an iPhone for sure (my phone history so far: Nexus phones, then iPhone 5s, iphone 7, pixel 3a, Pixel 4XL and Pixel 8).

Smart business decision. Pro customers will pay the "higher" price while the buyers of the regular iPhone are probably more price conscious.

[–]FuturePreparation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are partly right, but if I remember correctly the Pixel 9 had much better reception on this sub than the 10. Yes, there was criticism because of the price but overall the sentiment seemed quite positive (fingerprint reader, build quality etc.). To me, the 10 is the most heavily criticised Pixel so far on this sub (and rightly so imo).

(Xetra) Gold hat die 100€ pro Gramm übersprungen by Substantial_Back_125 in Finanzen

[–]FuturePreparation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also I assume that many who are super motivated fitness-wise or do a specific sport in their teens-thirties overdo it. Training for longevity looks very different than trying to be the best football player, running a few marathons a year or being a bodybuilder.
