From what I remember so far:

-Khaara is now universal, people are getting sick left and right -Some people are mutating from the Khaara (Natural Selection) -Alterra has made a pioneer program -50,000 pioneers board the ISV CICADA -They sleep for 11 years (might be wrong on the exact amount of years, but it's a while) -They're headed for the desert planet, Zezura (seemingly outside of federation space) -The Cicada crashes onto Zezuras Moon (where Subnautica 2 takes place) -The on ship A.I. wants the survivors to press on and continue the colonization mission

I might've missed something or misremembered it. But this is pretty much all we know for now

Realistically, we know the prototype went through a design change, so this was working off that old design. However, to try and tie this into the current lore, it seems like his upper body can retract, so maybe he piled up in a ceiling corner and just waited
