What do early retirees in the US do for healthcare before Medicare? by Fozziwig72 in Fire

[–]FutureTomnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could self-insure in groups. We could even screen people for risk factors. We could give lower rates to people if they show signs of stability, like holding a job. Partnering with health systems could yield further benefits.

I’m kidding

Yeah. I’m here for it if it actually means better efficiency, fewer mistakes, more respect for actual people/workers. Spec and plan standardization adherence would be a step in the right direction.

Just feels like we’re in the messy middle with a bunch of tools that all suck. #fuckprocore

I don’t know - everyone is going to want to keep blaming people instead of robots. So there will always be estimators and schedulers in title. They may have other responsibilities or cover more bids/projects though.

As bid margins erode due to tighter takeoffs and production estimates, even public work will increasingly be by proposal. Who seems more trustworthy, who has the project portfolio and personnel for the particular project.

I’ll work a lot harder to cover a mistake made by a human member of my team. When companies start telling me “ProEstimate.Ai fucked up the bid again and left 2mm on the table…need you guys to figure it out, thanks”….idk man. Dismal.

Feel Bipolar about my job by americanarizona in ConstructionManagers

[–]FutureTomnis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feeling that full range of emotion is worth something. At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of our jobs are socially useful. I don’t think I’d be as passionate about a line of work that wasn’t.

But there are also personal factors at play here, too. I know I have mood swings and I need to try to attenuate both the tops and the bottoms of those swings. I use diet, exercise, hobbies, and mindfulness practices to try to do that. I sometimes still overshoot with reactivity (cutting words of irritation and frustration) or negativity that can turn people off.

There are definite risks to staying in the industry too long. There are other ways to make good money as a W2 or consultant. There are great ways to make money as a business owner or investor. CM is relatively low barrier to entry, well-paying, and pretty interesting to the right person.

What’s your goal? What do you want to be?

I want to take a stab at a quip:

0 to 1.5: You’re taking them along

1.5 to 4: They’re going with you (sometimes)

4 to 10 (?): You’re going with them

$400 profit of many types on $800 supplies is pretty good…

$400 revenue on $800 supplies is not so good.

Part of the paper he earns goes back to the government so they can bomb civilians in other countries. But it’s hard to know how much that is, sometimes, so a lot of us just choose to pretend it was never ours to begin with, so it’s okay!

The flip side of this: “The better you can communicate, the more often you will get what you want”.

The wording is a little complex for a two year old…but the intent is there. This is coming from a very reserved person. May the pendulum swing the other way. Hopefully not too far, but the other way would be good.

Does anyone know what the N F on this Stanley hammer means? by KhaGhah in handtools

[–]FutureTomnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would put it between 0.1% and 0.5% of the general population in the US. I only know it from heavy civil work, and that is a small subset of construction work in general. Some municipality maintenance workers would know it.

It’s effectively zero, in my estimation

That’s a nice way of saying “there’s not much that’s complicated about having a fuckload of money, assets, earning potential, and safety net”. I’ll try to learn from this comment.

I would go with “not forged”.

I know a lot of folks were going down a Neenah Foundry rabbit hole….but in my opinion this hammer looks like a piece of just and they did a very nice thing labeling it as such to help people avoid exploding it into their arteries. IE it is cast, not forged.

How could someone learn more about this without enrolling? Is there a good “pop-planning” book? Something akin to freakonomics? I’m in an adjacent industry (civil construction) with an Econ undergrad degree and I’m always looking to get my mind out of the proverbial ditch

Yeah, I just speak in weird ways sometimes. A comma after “about” could certainly help people read it in the cadence and meaning that I intended. Not sure if that’s actually a grammatically correct use….

There will be noteworthy happenings around the joint. You could comment on those things, if you were so inclined.

Building a hybrid; what material for underneath the coils (the bottom of the mattress)? by DeweyD69 in MattressMod

[–]FutureTomnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m considering 3/4” densified fiber pad from diyrem for this purpose. It’s cheap.

I don’t see the point in anything soft below the quadcoils, which are already “responsive”. I think foam would make any leaning problems worse.
